Million Dollar Baby (2004) Reaction & Review! FIRST TIME WATCHING!!

Ойын-сауық

Million Dollar Baby was one of the best sports films I’ve ever seen. We’re breathing rare air with a movie like this. From the writing by Paul Haggis, to the directing and performance by Clint Eastwood, Hilary Swank and Morgan Freeman to the exceptional cinematography and score. It was near perfection. Let’s not even talk about the incredible twist that I didn’t see coming. This film left me in tears and it was well worth not only my time, but the Academy Award for Best Picture. This is an easy recommendation for everybody.

For a two time Oscar winning actress I still think Hilary Swank is so so underrated. This film is such a heartbreaker. And it’s not one that you can just pop on whenever. This is a rare watch kind of film. Boys Don’t Cry is even more so.

Beautifully heartbreaking. One of the most stunning films in existence. One of those rare, rare films that won't allow 100% of you to walk out of the theater - it takes a piece and keeps it. I've requested this film from every reactor who i felt was a human being, worth their salt. I think you gave it a proper treatment, Shan. Good job, and i'm glad you watched it.

I have only seen this film one time, in theaters in 2004. I was only 20 years old and it has stayed with me all these years later on that one viewing. I have never cried so much at a movie in my life. I went with my younger sister and we were both sobbing in the theatre, all the way through the lobby, out into an appropriately rainy night, through the parking lot and then sat and still cried for a long time after we got to the car. I'm sure she still remembers it too. This is the first time I have re-visited it since and I'm glad it was with you! Love your channel and commentaries, great reaction.

as did many my age, I started watching him on TV in "Rawhide" and while my lifetime favorite movie of his is still "Outlaw Josey Wales", as far as I'm concerned the powerfully moving "Million Dollar Baby" is the culmination and brilliant application of everything he learned in front of and behind the camera and puts him in the pantheon of master film makers.

Outlaw Josie Wales is great. And his dollar trilogies were a good entertaining watch too... this movie was wonderful and disturbing - which is why its difficult to rewatch... my favorite Eastwood is still Unforgiven, and proby also Gran Torino... but my introduction to Clint was when I was 10 years old and loved those stupid orangutan movies (any which way but loose, any which way u can) - followed by Escape from Alcatraz (which was pretty good)... Been an Eastwood fan since the orangutan movies anyway... (of course back then I was also a Farrah Fawcett fan too - for different reasons) lol

@@Adam-mj5hl (well, that's annoying. I just sent u a reply that appears to have been removed by Google/ youtube)... What i said was... well fair enough. But keep in mind that the main character of this movie, Walt (Eastwood) was an old crusty and racist bastard. He'd been that way since the war (Vietnam i believe) where he saw Asians killing Americans and he saw himself killing Asians... obviously a traumatizing experience... He was racist. Particularly against Asians... BUT that was part of the story arc of the movie... He was able to witness and observe (not by choice) Asians living their day-2-day lives. Then he saw a sample of them doing exactly what he expected of them. They broke into his property and tried to steal something precious to him (very similar in his mind to 'them' stealing American lives)... his views were not right and based only on perception and not fact or reality... this 'perception' is not valid or accurate, but it is very very real... in every culture throughout history and throughout the globe... The movie started out with him being very racist to highlight his ill-conceived hate... Then the story arc... he was able to witness their true selves... eventually respecting that their lives and beliefs were in-line with his own... then over time able to respect them as the good human beings as they are... then over time learning to cast aside his racism and hate and understand that good people are good people regardless of race or prejudice... That's the whole point of the movie... its part of what makes this movie great (aside from great writing, great acting, and great direction)... BUT his racist hate eventually turned into understanding truth and enlightenment is the basic premise of this movie... if he didn't start out racist, then there was no point to the movie... Try watching American History X... its also great for the same reasons

@@glenmcdonald375 What bothers me about GT is that it reinforces the old tired White Savior complex theme. Eastwood’s character, the noble white man, steps in to help the minority Asians and sacrifices his life to save them from their plight. The movie assumes that the minorities need saving from the benevolent, kind-hearted white person. Let’s assume the roles were reversed and Eastwood’s character was played by an old Asian man who intervenes on behalf of a poor struggling white family, would you still feel the same way about the film?

I had the privilege of seeing this movie at the cinema. I don't think there was a dry eye in the crowd exiting the movie house. In 1992 a film called the Power of One came out and put Morgan Freeman on my radar. His character was so beautifully portrayed by Freeman that I cried long before the end. It was the first time I saw Daniel Craig, who played his role too well. Like Million Dollar Baby, It was a powerful film with exceptional acting. Grand reaction Shan.

Million Dollar Baby is Eastwood's uncontested masterpiece. Unforgiven is a millimeter behind. It's incredible that from a career built on depictions of machismo and toughness and violence, Eastwood gives us a story of devastating emotion built around kindness and love and loss as his greatest film. Eastwood and Swank's performances are among the most moving ever put on film. It's not a movie you can watch all that often. It's like having your heart ripped out. But man, is it a masterpiece.

I remember reviews at the time it was released said that the film developed in a different way half way through, but they didn't elaborate. So for all I knew it could have been a falling out between Swank and Eastwood, or even Eastwood's age and health catching up with him. It was a shock when I did see it in the cinema. Although, the film's title is just as significant whichever half you think about. Thank you for your video. I really appreciated your emotional responses and your appraisal as you were watching.

Shan, this was one hell of a reaction to a totally heartbreaking movie. Like you saw, it took a turn that I hadn't seen coming myself either. Maggie's mother was such a despicable character, and the actress and her family played their roles perfectly. Clint Eastwood has a knack for creating films where you feel deeply for the characters. He's such a treasure. When he finally moves on it's going to be a huge loss for cinema. TBH, I can't imagine a world without Eastwood. My dad introduced me to Eastwood in my early years, and we had a lot of fun with his antics in movies like Any Which Way But Loose, but seeing Eastwood go on to create movies like this is incredible. One of my best memories of my dad was him getting me into a showing of Any Which Way But Loose when I was around 8 years old. He pestered the ticket clerk for a while (with a big queue forming behind us), and she finally gave in and let me watch the movie. At the time I never knew what all the fuss was about, but looking back it was an amazing experience. Sure, all I saw was an old lady shooting guys in the ass, and an Orangutang punching people, but it was such an amazing experience, and I treasure it to this day. Thanks so much dad, I miss you loads!

Great reaction Shan, as always. It's one of the greatest escalations I've ever seen because it effects both of them in such a non arbitrary way. What I mean is it takes away everything that meant anything to both of them, it's all she has and Clint's character has as he not only lost his daughter and he let Morgan's character lose an eye by not stopping the fight and he regrets not doing that. It took his eye and now it took her career. This is then further escalated where he willingly takes someone he considered his flesh and bloods life. We had to experience her in such a vegetative state to justify such a great escalation for Clint to put on himself. Amazing writing and directing.

It's an amazing film, but in Spain, it came out in the worst possible moment. Few weeks earlier, Mar Adentro by Amenábar had premiered and it was a film based on the real story of a Spanish man who had become tetraplegic after an accident and fought for his right to die. The film had been a success and everybody was talking about this topic so when just a little later we went to see this film, the final twist was a bit of wtf for most of us. Have you seen "Paint your wagon"? It's a great musical with Lee Marvin and Clint Eastwood. Absolutely hilarious!

The film industry just doesn't have enough classical tragedies. I respect and admire Clint Eastwood for recognizing the poetic beauty in tragedy. I feel like we need more of that in the world. Studios want to back projects with happy endings (becausethat'swhere the money is), but I think our depressed society needs to see tragedy in film. I know that seems counter-intuitive, but tragedy is actually cathartic for depressed people.

My husband and I went to this movie. As the credits rolled everyone stayed seated, crying. When they were finally over we all rose and filed out, silently, except for sniffles and sobs. I remember the looks on the faces of the people, waiting for the next showing, outside the theater. They had a look of surprise and reticence on their faces as they saw us stricken, some still crying. I often think how it might have wrecked the movie for them, a little, because they knew something awful was coming.

I've been through her story about her Dad's dog. I questioned my right to even do that. I argued with myself about doing something that only God had the right to do or whether it was a merciful thing to do considering my dog's quality of life at his old age for a dog. It was one of the hardest things I've ever had to do in my life. Although I was raised on a farm and have accepted lots of death among animals and I am also a hunter. And was raised with the knowledge that something or someone has to die in order for something or someone to live. But, taking my dog's, my first "Child's," life hit me like a ton of lead. I don't know whether I could have another pet due to that. Nor hunt again... So, what I am saying is, no I couldn't do what Frank did. Only God has the right to decide how much suffering there will be before death. Maybe I'm wrong. If you think so, then help me with my self argument. I'm open to suggestions.

You are absolutely correct about the movie being so good. You must see Boys Don’t Cry. Crash is also incredible. Hilary Swank is amazing in prepping for this role and all of her roles. Her acting is just heartbreaking. Stacy from Seattle sending love to you! 💜

Character actress Margo Martindale!! Shan, thank you so much for all the work you put into your channel. You've fast become my favourite reactor, bringing a level of genuine calm intelligence to every film and always bringing an honest balanced perspective. Your videos bring me a lot of joy and, for that, once again thank you.

Great film for all the obvious reasons I really wish Swank was in more because she’s so good, And Anthony Mackie was so convincing also, Eastwood and Freeman together is always Movie Gold, thanks again Shan always a pleasure

You MUST react to The Outlaw Josey Wales (also directed by Eastwood), I think it is my favorite Eastwood movie of all time. That, and High Plains Drifter.

By the way, this score is Eastwood's. He is a pianist and a jazz aficionado. This is his composition - i do not know if he is actually playing the piano here, but i really love this minimalistic score.

Please do Mystic river next. Also directed by Eastwood. Won Best Actor & Best Supporting actor. Came out 1 year before million dollar baby. Was also nominated for Best picture & Director but the Only reason why it didn't when best picture & director was because of Lord of the rings

I love this movie. It destroys me every time I watch it. I agree with you, it's faultless on every level. I haven't watched Crash since it came out. I remember loving it back then, but I've heard a lot of people saying it hasn't aged well and comes across as quite simplistic and patronising now. I must give it a rewatch and see how I feel, because I really rate Haggis as a writer.

Clint looks so young and fit compared to today, but I remember thinking when this came out that he was old. I'm glad he's still around, but it's tough seeing him ground down.

If there has ever been another actor/director who is more consistently great as well as being quite prolific, I haven't heard of them yet. Eastwood is Hollywood's greatest ever in my opinion. I don't actually think it's very close. Mystic River is a must watch too.

One of my favourite films, and maybe the saddest I’ve ever seen. My understanding is that it was originally going to be Sandra Bullock in this movie, but, after-the-fact, would we really want anyone but Hilary Swank in this role? No. I still need to see Boys Don’t Cry, but Hilary makes me afraid to watch her in powerful dramas - she tore me up once, and I don’t know if I want her to do that to me again. Seriously! Now, I do recommend the Christopher Nolan film Insomnia, which will give you Al Pacino, Hilary Swank…and Robin Williams.
