It's an amazing period-piece film. It really feels visceral and all in place. Master film making. David Thewlis's character was my favourite. Real-life Paladin.

Saw this in theater, came away feeling that there must have been a meeting...we need to move away from the original crew, go with the next gen, how do we go about that, well, obviously we need to get rid of Shatn, oops, Kirk, we need to get away from Kirk and crew, but with a few meaningless cameos, and Kirk need a heroic exit, okay, let's write a flimsy time travel story, with, of course yet another villain (can't have a star trek movie without a villain), maybe get some klingons involved, how about those buxom sisters, wrap it up with a fireworks explosion, and it's a wrap, drinks anyone? To be fair, there were some nice moments to in this, and some decent effects, although I think the whole planet crashing sequence has not aged well, the emotion chip was more a distraction than anything else, but led to a few light hearted moments, and please please bring back Sulu's daughter, and Alan Ruck, give them a ship and a crew, and some better stories than this, this was weak star trek on most every level, and leaves one dissatisfied, it felt contrived and manipulative without a worthy payoff, there were better stories to be told

This is actually one of the most historically accurate historical epics ever made. Yes certain things are added or taken away, the main character really existed, and he did hold off Saladin for a while, and when Saladin took the city he did show mercy to the Christians. Its also one of my fav movies too, this was way better than the theatrical cut and because the original cut was so bad this movie didn't receive the sort pf praise it rightfully deserved- if this version had been released instead

This is the most accurate depiction of life on a submarine, German submariners suffered higher casualties than Kamikaze pilots. The survivors hated the author of the book though, as he was pretty hard on Dönitz who they all loved. Dönitz was a Nazi, but he was also a good leader of men, he knew the names of all officers in the submarine arm, and he cared for them. And they rewarded that with undying loyalty. You probably do not know, but the US waged an effective sub war against the Japanese (who were amateurs at fighting subs), and the surviving captains of Germany and US subs would often meet after the war and strike up friendships. Sailors are sailors and the sea is the worst enemy (convoy) and submariners are submariners. Germans know how to make war movies; heroism futile, sacrifice in vain. Try Stalingrad (1993) and "Die Brûcke". There is also a Russian one "Come And See" that will traumatise you.

There is an homage to this film in the TV show Babylon 5. The scenes with the huge Krell machine where they are walking on the walkway is copied as the “Great Machine” on Epsilon 3, the planet that Babylon 5 is located near.

The jacket Professor Marvel wears in the beginning was found in a thrift store when the props department was looking for a jacket that showed "faded elegance." When the actor put his hands in the pockets he found the nametag of the previous owner, L. Frank Baum, the author of the Wizard of Oz books.

I like your review until the end - where you try to make the film something it was NOT INTENDED to be. As well blame a short story for not being a novel. *Appreciate what IS!*
