Milkmen on the rise - BBC London News

Milkmen seemed like a dying breed but could they make a comeback? As Londoners reduce the plastic they use, one milk company says it's seen a rise in people asking for glass bottle deliveries. Caroline Davies is up early with one milkman on his round in West London.

My mum, who lived in mid-Cheshire until she died 18 months ago had a milkman. I'd love to have a milkman but I live in a second floor flat in a block.

If a way can be found of granting them entry through the outer doors, they could deliver to your door. Same goes for the postman.

They could also bring farm produce, fresh bread, etc. to those who request it. In switzerland you can have subscription to get vegetables every week from the farm but it's kind of a rip-off money-wise.

2 things I will say here. Firstly, if the price was more competitive, I would be signing up. I use about 4pts a week and so the cost of a milkman over Tesco is more than double. Secondly, if they advertised themselves, there could be a lot more people signing up. They just take customers for granted. Flyers, newspapers, online ads. The lot. I never see any adverts at all for these types of services.

It could become popular again , with the recent campaigns to reduce plastic packaging, back in the 80's and earlier most drinks bottles were glass and many were deposit returnable, only problem was, glass made the product alot heavier to transport compared to plastic.

Totally support this. Would be great to see the original style electric milk float on our streets. The only downside for some people is paying pretty much double the price for this service. Most people are used to buying cheap milk from supermarkets, £1 pound for 4 pints whereas milkman is 80-90 pence per pint. Although people would happily support this because it make total sense in many ways, the price will be a bitter pill to swallow for some..

Forget about recycling for this, having a milkman means that your glass bottles are simply cleaned and reused continuously.

I had a great-uncle who was a milkman which seems so archaic but in this era of home delivery it seems great. We have a Schwan's truck go by our neighborhood but at $11 for a box of ice cream sandwiches that's a bit much.

I'm on the lookout for a local milkman (or woman) to start having my milk delivered to my doorstep again,as of old - in glass bottles for the sake of the environment. David Attenborough's The Blue Planet did the world a service exposing the hideous problem with plastic waste to households here. It was only a couple of economically adverse periods that forced me to slash costs that stopped my custom in the past, though I was uneasy from the start about the potential impact single-use plastic bottles and the steady driving of milkmen out of business from the late 80s until recently. I wanted to do this anyway but this has come back onto my agenda because I wish to (reluctantly) give the swerve to the shops because of the queues and now mask rules. I was fine with hand sanitising and social distancing. If I can find a milk round that will deliver to me I envisage retaining my custom with them for keeps, even after the restrictions (becoming more draconian at the same time as relaxing the social distance rules - wtf) in the shops are ended.

They reuse the glass bottles only 25 times. For them to create less polution than from plastic bottles, they would have to reuse them thousands of times

Don't forget that "pollution" doesn't just mean CO2, but also plastic waste in streams/oceans/etc. That's the reason most people are worried about it (glass is much easier to recycle as well once you can't reuse the bottles)
