I used to sit on my grandparent's back porch with a butter churn. It was a long process, but when you heard the "clunk clunk" you knew, that chore was over for the day. Grandpa had me milk the gentle cow, while he milked Old Babe. She was a bit skittish. He had to carry the milk bucket for me up the hill, it was too heavy. I do have fond memories of those times. I enjoy your videos.

I did, once. I was five years old and our teacher brought a little tub of cream to school and told our class we were going to make butter. She showed us the cream and then the tub got passed around the class and each of us had to shake it up as hard as we could. At breaktime we had buttered biscuits with our milk.

What a beautiful way to describe your relationship with your cow! The bond with my sweet Lily girl is just as you describe. My husband says when he looks at me as I’m milking he sees joy and peacefulness. I love laying my face into her flank and breathing in the sweetness of her warm body. I’m blessed with a sweet gentle jersey that truly is part of our family. She gives back more than anything else on our homestead. God had me in mind when he created her. Thank you for sharing this great video. God bless y’all ❤️. Shout out! Yes we make lots of butter. Jersey cream is the BEST!

Yes I have made butter, with a butter churn, and it was very tedious. I think most Americans don't get the symbiotic relationship between a cow and a human. It sounds like you do. They are very intelligent animals, and quite picky, they like some people, tolerate others, and have nothing to do with a few. People go into the market grab a gallon of milk take it to the refrigerator and think no more about it, throwing away the plastic jug afterwards, causing another huge problem that we won't get into. Most Americans have never tasted raw milk, it's illegal in my state to sell raw milk. I haven't had cows since I was young. But I liken the difference between whole milk in the grocery store and raw milk, with grape Kool-Aid and 100% grape juice. They're just a world different. Beautiful video, thanks for sharing it with us. Jimmy

I used to when I could get good raw cow's milk. I found that if I let the cream 'age' a few days and let it come up to room temp before churning (also in my kitchenaid mixer), the butter would come up in just a few minutes instead of the usual 15 or so minutes with cold cream. Then I used old cream cheese containers as my mold and storage container for the freezer.

This brought back memories, as a young girl I remember my family going to Ar ( we lived in MI) to visit my grandparents on their farm and I would go with my grandma while she milked her milk cow and then back to the farmhouse for the storing process, I would help her with standing milk that was already in the cooler with the cream on top to take the cream and put it into the churn, but I don't recall that I ever helped with the churning. I have a lot of great memories spent with my Grandma!

I've always said, the family milk cow is the 🌟 of the farm❤I also leave the calf on and boy, it makes a huge difference in everyone's life, including the cow! Cows LOVE their babies, just like we do, and it's important, at least I think so, in her emotional health. My gal, Sweetie, is all about business, not a "loving" cow and that's fine with me. We each have a job, give each other a hi and bye, and carry on with our days. I love making butter, cheeses and having fresh cream for all kinds of goodies, but mainly to put in a great cup of coffee!!

Oh man, I can not wait to do so with our goats. I am lactose intolerant, can't even handle the raw cow's milk or the A2 stuff. We chose goats that have more butterfat in their milk. It may take longer but I'm happy that we'll be able to take those two ingredients off our shopping list. I think however, we may try for a cow later on once we have the space. I'd love to have a Guernsey cow with the golden milk.

I was raised on a farm in Iowa. We milked cows , Separated the cream , But we pasteurized. We used the cream on everything. But never made butter. It was very interesting. And brought me back to having to go out to the parlor and wash the separator. I hated that job. We sold milk so the parts to the machine had to be clean. Farming is a lot of work. Your joy out of it is nice. Joyce

Beautiful! And yes, I have an old glass and wood crank butter churn that we have really enjoyed using with our children, the neighbor kids. For my youngest daughter's 2nd birthday party, as a little activity, we churned and spread the butter on homemade croissants that the kids got to bake (tea party theme) along with jam we made from our crab apple tree. I've definitely learned the hard way that you need to rinse the butter. This was a wonderful video. Very envious of your raw milk supply and freezer of gorgeous butter balls!

But it really took a long time before I realized it had made because it was harder to see being as it was white and my mixer made it kind of like whipped butter. I want a jersey cow so bad though. Real butter!! Every now and then for fun I will get the kids some cream from the store, put it in a mason jar and let them shake some butter up. They love it. I remember sitting on my friends picnic table as a kid and doing the same shaking, taking turns to rest our arms. Some day.....

One way to make it easy to take the cream off is to put the milk in those big jars with a spigot on the bottom . Just drain until you leave as much cream on the milk as you like.

How did you make your walk in cooler? How many days does it take for the cream to separate? What happens to the bottom part of the milk in the jar?

I remember eating in a farm to table restaurant when these kind of things were starting then, they served this mushy butter that was made from the cow's milk in their farm and the story behind making. They gave me the cow's name, and said that the cow has become thin from daily produce of cheese and butter😁I am not sure whether to believe or not because the crew were trained to be story tellers but i remember it so vividly when i saw this episode.

I love how you are looking all cute in your dress and boots going out to milk. I’m usually milking in my PJs in the morning or I’m all sweaty and dirty from farm work 😂 I’d be fixing up though if I was going to film it 😉 We tag team too. I milk the right side and one of the kids milk the left (they take turns). It takes about 20min start to finish. We have a all natural, grassfed only Jersey girl but man I wish her teats were as long as your girls!!! It would make handmilking easier!

I saw somewhere online a lady who separated the cream off the top with a clear flexible plastic tube siphon style.

I was telling a friend a story today about that! That's how I ended up here, so I could send them a video to explain how it all works. I called my mom in tears because my beautiful "from scratch" whip cream needed for a desert, turned lumpy & thick. My mom laughed & said "honey you whipped too much and made butter"!
