Why are people seeing only the appearance? "he's so cute, he's so sexy, his eyes etc." Did you hear what this poem was about? THIS IS JUST A SURFACE, A MASK. Look deeper
Still listening to this 12 years later. This is a master piece.
once he was asked why he was so nervous and he answered "you try telling all those people that you wear a mask and wrote a suicide note"
i don't get how you can listen to this poem and then comment below on his attractiveness. His poem is LITERALLY about how people see the surface and judge him for it whether it be that he's hot, untrustworthy, uncaring, or lax, with a lot of it simply because of the fact that he's mixed. He clearly speaks about the privilege he receives because of his lighter skin. And he prefaces this entire thing with how sometimes the most popular person is the one with no friends, alluding to himself being popular with girls but ultimately lonely. The piece is painful and heavy with regret, shame, and self-hate. I wouldn't call it beautiful, but something that is weighty, so much so that you can't look away.

Props to you for getting it
"Sometimes he does things because tomorrow he know's he'll choose to forget them." - I know that logic all too well.

As do I
lies at the brim of his smile, cheek safety pinned to the edge by a pile of regrets lovely, the way he speaks.

***** yes, miles is incredible. :)
"I wonder, how do you trust a man whose eyes can go from green to gone in a single night?" .... damn, that's clever!!! Dig this.
"Eyes go from green to gone in a single night" Wow...I love this.

PBreezy19 He's talking about wearing a mask. He is saying that this mask that he wears is covering his feelings. He was dead inside but on the outside, he was just a normal kid, this metaphorical mask that he is wearing is hiding his true self.

That one hit close to home! Very powerful.
That smile has stolen so many hearts and it just broke mine
miles has honestly changes me as a writer. he is my largest inspiration for poetry and is the reason i write. I can see the passion in his eyes, and his feared betrayal of the world. this is the first time I've ever taken the time to comment something on youtube but i just thought to share my thoughts on his touching poetry.
This made me cry.. I don't even know why, I just started crying..
he's cute, he's hot. he knows it. He uses it. He confesses his regret for his charm and that he knows he will get away with it. He will get girls and use his charm and gifts to. I think this is as much resembled in his use of comparing it to racism. He got away with awful things, he is sad now, but sometimes people still forget, even he will choose to.

ThaGenius101 it doesn't matter what your sexual preference is on how you can judge the attractiveness of others. David Beckham or Wayne Rooney? You don't fancy Beckham but you know he's hot stuff, right? Sexuality would only play a part in sexual attraction, not overall judgement of body and face aesthetics.

(work with the grain to fix that that goes against it to ruin it ) Scottish fisherman's proverb. what does being pretty have to do with how easy your life is it doesn't im fairly OK when it comes to looks but Ive been shunned by every person in my old town because i didn't believe in there god beauty does not stave of hatred nor does it make it ok to burn a girl in the second story bathroom because she said you were sheep do not invite insincerity into your words i have lived the life of the little white girl and it is not easier or harder it is just the same s every one else and im not even adding the fact that i like girls as wael as boys do not act supirior to another when all you have to say is blame .breath

+LiamEBM good job!😊
exactly. he doesnt spit the poem with pride... he spits himself and hes not proud that he represents the poem, and it's one of my favorite performances because of it
Flesh can indeed be too glisten...too golden to be honest.
Green to gone in a single night....check his mask
I wish I could write like Miles.. He's amazing. I have no words.
Forget his looks, his soul, the way he plays with words and puts them together to paint dreams and pain and every human emotion there is.
It upsets me that most people are just commenting on his looks it's like did you even hear what the poem was about? Try listening. Not looking.

Kristen Hanover I think it was just us that noticed
I don't know what it is but there's something about this that I'm absolutely in love with.
You guys seriously need to hear him. Get your eyes off of the appearance and focus on the words. If he actually committed suicide after this poem, half of you guys would wonder,......"Why!? He was so cute. He LOOKED like nothing was wrong with him." That's because you guys weren't listening man. Please listen to the actual words. I completely understand what he's talking about.
I listen to this poem at least once a month
1:07 though. my god.
I love this poem! This poem is about Wilding out because he doesn't care about tomorrow!! He doesn't care if he lives nor die because nothing matters but the moment. "He wrote his will this year" This kid is "Choosing to forget" everything, by taking his life. It's sad! Very good poem Miles! I love your work! -WesFromSE-Texas
Always an appreciater of Miles and his work!
oh my heart.
This is by far one of the most painful things I've ever watched. WOW !!

really impressed by Miles and by Jamaica Orsorio and by Ittai Wong. all amazing
He is talking about his struggle having a black dad and a white mom and being so light-skinned, he is also talking about his mask that he wears and about the riotous life he lives but deep down he is just a sad, lonely kid, if you watch some more of his poems it kind of fills in the blanks
This is still the most beautiful spoken poem I have ever heard.
Much Love and Respect!
This poem is so beautiful. "His eyes can go from green to gone in a single night"
You got it down pact Mr. Miles Hodges. I love listening to your poetry and the rest of The Strivers Row. Ya'll keep it up and hopefully, someday I can watch ya'll live. Much love from an aspiring poet to a great artist. Inspiration to many...remember that.
See this is y you gotta LOVE .Not just Miles but truly all the Strive Row squad 'cause when they say a peom its not like they just sayin but they actually feel the words . . . . .it does leave you speechless nd Mr. Hodges well done KEEP IT UP YALL !!!!
i loved the video the poem was beautiful it spoke to me in many ways and i am touched by the fact that some people actually noticed his feelings instead of his face i didn't even look up until the end of the poem and i was surprised to see such a beautiful person instead of the image he cast himself in
i love the poem, and the way he spoke the words...
I was obsessed with these poems years ago, still so true
"Sometimes he does things because he knows that tomorrow he will choose to forget them." Beautiful.
The smile at the beginning, that's what got me.
11:16pm Dallas, Texas. You never know who will see you shine.
The way he says the last line... It's so personal. It breaks my heart.
"sometimes he does things because he knows tomorrow he will choose to forget them." chilling ending.
this isn't the best written poem i've ever heard, but it is one of the most raw and honest ones and that's what makes it so amazing.
I can listen to him all day! amazingg!!
His talent, style and vivid imagery are out of this world. This kid could've been the GOATs in hip-hip...notice I didn't say rap
Ahhhh he's so nervous and talented. I love you Miles Hodges.
Listened to this when I was a kid and the first line always stuck with me. Now that I’m almost 21 and just wrote my will a month ago I think the last line will stick with me more
Love this poem had to listen to it over and over cause the first time i didnt get it
This is a fantastic poem written and performed with honesty and passion. This kid is one cool kid.
Miles is blessed... This poem! #Amazing

I wrote a poem about Miles Hodges, he makes me feel nostalgic yet we never shared a past
This cuts me soo deep, he must have felt that he never belonged anywhere, especially that line "That a father and his oldest son will forever be linched together by the lip" people don't know how much words can hurt :( we all want to belong, so why can't we just accept each other as we are? We all bleed red....
amazing... Beautiful crowd as well

hes gorgeous lol when he smiled he made me smile too lolol
Yes it is!
Yes! Listen to his poem "Harlem" :)
1:08 His smile is so adorable and innocent almost childlike.
AND YOU CAN TELL HE MEANS EVERY WORD. THIS (AND I KID YOU NOT) BRINGS ME TO TEARS.
"The coolest kid in the room doesn't actually have any friends" That hit me like a ton of bricks
"how do you trust a man whose eyes go from green to gone in a single night" silver tongue and golden heart

Represents how he feels about this poem. If you watch his other material, his body language is way different from this because of the content and how he felt when he wrote/performed it.
