Miles Davis Kind of Blue - What’s the best pressing? UHQR, MFSL or original US Mono?

Музыка

In this video I am comparing different versions of Kind of Blue. The Music On Vinyl 2013 Mono, the 2015 45 RPM Stereo Mobile Fidelity Sound Lab, the 2021 Bernie Grundman UHQR Stereo by Analogue Productions and an original Columbia Six Eye Santa Maria Mono from 1959.

That original pressing is something to treasure, for sure, and not just for its distinctive aural qualities. There's always something special in handling an original pressing or an original printing of a book, knowing that it was in this form that the work first became known to the world, and that the object itself existed in the world of that time (in this case, 1959).

I have the original US 1st Stereo 6-eye pressing and a friend has the UHQR & the MoFi. We compared all three long and hard on two systems and we both agreed: the MoFi sounds a bit muffled (as so often) and the original and the UHQR are 99% identical. What you might perceive as a difference is purely academic. And that is very rare! In most cases a first pressing is the best because pulled from fresh master tapes as opposed to a remaster from 50-60 year old tapes. But here AP has really put a lot of effort and the result has become very good. If you don't care about the prestige of an original and/or don't want to search the second hand market, the UHQR is a very good choice. I know of only one other case where a comparison turned out like this: with Are Your Experienced by Hendrix. Here the original (I have UK and US 1st-pressings) are both significantly worse than the amazing UHQR. In other cases i'm going mostly with first- or early pressings.

MoFi is from digital files. UHQR is from analogue original tape. If you can find a clean original that’s the way to go although one side was released slightly slower than 331/3.😮

I own the 2013 Mono Music On Vinyl pressing. I also own a 2010 Stereo Legacy. I've never heard the other versions you mention. I'm sure they are amazing. Without having them to compare, the 2013 mono sounds excellent to my ears. The 2010 Stereo Legacy copy sounds very good as well.

My vintage Columbia 6-Eye Stereo pressing has Demo Disc sound - sound that’s guaranteed to make you want to take all of your remastered pressings and dump them off at the Goodwill After auditioning a Hot Stamper Kind of Blue like this one - a pressing that captures the sound of this amazing group like nothing you have ever heard - you may be motivated to add a hearty “Good riddance to bad audiophile rubbish!” KOB is the embodiment of the big-as-life, spacious and timbrally accurate 30th Street Studio Sound Fred Plaut was justly famous for Space, clarity, transparency, and in-the-room immediacy are some of the qualities to be found on this (vintage) pressing It’s guaranteed to beat any copy you’ve ever played. Scores of differently mastered versions have been cut over the years, but to find one that’s lively and dynamic yet still communicates the relaxed nature of this music is a trick that few of them can pull off. These sides on the original label did just that.

I already pre-ordered the 45 rpm about a year ago so I really am curious what it will sound like. Both the 33 and the 45 where mastered by Bernie Grundman so it might even become the best Kind of Blue around (who knows?) Then again... I might sell the MOFI 45.

You guys who tend to have lots and lots of records always are really critical about pressings however when I see your music system I immediately see why you have trouble with critiquing music! If I take into account that you are educated in music (as a musician with a musical ear) then why the great disparity of one top pressing like MOV or have the need to elevate these over inflated pressings especially the one that Chad Kassem is profiting heavily on! I can tell you I have a badass system with a great MC cartridge playing into Klipsch Cornwalls! I know music as I play 7 instruments, one of them being trumpet, and I can tell you without hesitation the MOV sounds incredible! I think those in the VC need to show us their credentials and systems before denigrating one pressing over another! Apples to Oranges!!!

Why doubt my system? I have a Thorens TD160 with Ortofon Blue for stereo and white for mono. My receiver is a Marantz 2220 and my speakers are Dynaudio BM6A MK1. But to be quite frank; differences in pressings are even audible on some of the cheapest systems available. I am not giving critique for the sense of giving critique. I give a genuine opinion about my experiences and they really brought me closer to the music and intenser listening experiences.

@@primeanalogrecords thanks for your response! I understand the tendency to want to doubt people's opinion especially when one senses an ego who wants to show off pressings. My situation is the following; I hate the fact that good sounding records can be expensive. I love the vinyl world for having great sounding records sometimes being cheap or being found cheap. I am reluctant to just trust the most expensive pressing or brand but sometimes they are great and sometimes they are not. In any way; I prefer to have the best sound for as little costs as possible and I take no pride or ego in having expensive pressings. The thing is with judging sound or even judging ones opinion on sound; there is no golden rule. Not all first pressings are the best, not all MOFI or Analogue Productions remasters are the best. Sometimes a killer pressing can be found in the most unlikely place (as I have expressed in my Queen and Beatles pressings videos). It has to do with trusting ones ears and comparing them A/B. I do doubt the opinions of some KZread reviewers with regard to remasters when they clearly do not compare them to originals (even when they can be easily found for about 10 bucks). But beyond that; finding the best sounding version of something is always a challenge. Luckily we can sometimes find beautiful sounding records for just a couple of bucks and be completely taken away by the sound and the music.

@@top5records796 great points all around! But I’m really on the OG train if for nothing else it should be a reference for listening to other pressings! Of course many represses sound good “tweeked” but I still care about the artist vision! That’s not to say that with todays endless ability to change this and that, the artist wouldn’t be happy with the “new” results! I’ll tell you this is why I love the VC because we can share ideas!

@@primeanalogrecords Supposedly Grundman cut the Classic Records/UHQR directly from the tape to the lathe without any tweaks. While I love OG's and have lots (being old) I find the remasters to be much more consistent. They tended to run many more disks off a stamper back in the day so a lot depends on which number in the pressing you get.
