Here is a transcript for key portions of the video:
I saw someone post a question in a forum for people with mild cognitive impairment, after you were diagnosed with MCI, who did the neuropsychiatrist suggest you work with? A neurologist? A general practitioner?
I hate to say it, but the replies were pretty sad, and pretty telling.
One woman said: "They didn’t have any suggestions! Just a diagnosis and have a good day!"
"Nobody," another said. "Just diagnosed and left to get on with it."
Welcome to the world of MCI, where you get a diagnosis for this frightening, baffling medical condition that you've never heard of, and then they just send you home and wish you luck.
That's not me saying that. That's the assessment of Dr. Oscar Lopez, one of the leading authorities on mild cognitive impairment. I was talking with him about this the other day, and he told me:
"The thing now is go you see your doctor and your doctor tells you that you have MCI, and says, 'Good luck. There is nothing I can do for you. Come and see me next year.'"
Well, don't believe that. There’s a lot they can do for you. So today, I want to offer you a basic understanding of the treatments for mild cognitive impairment, so you can know about all the latest and best care - and so you can make sure you’re getting it.
Hi, I'm Tony Dearing of GoCogno.com, the website for people with mild cognitive impairment.
So today, let’s demystify the treatment of MCI. And let’s start by blowing up this myth that there’s nothing they can do for you.
What you are looking at here are the new MCI treatment guidelines that were just issued by the American Academy of Neurology. This is the first time these guideline have been updated since 2001, so it’s a big deal. And I count almost 20 treatments here. Does this look like nothing to you?
No, these guidelines are extensive, covering how MCI is properly diagnosed, identifying possible causes, talking about biomarkers, clinical trials, treating apathy, anxiety and depression, and addressing a variety of approaches to potentially slowing cognitive decline and reducing your risk of dementia.
Now I’d love to walk you through all of these treatments, and I actually tried to do that that. I shot a version of this video where I talked about all the treatments, but when I was done, it was like 40 minutes long. And I look at it and I said, “Nobody is going to watch this. I wouldn’t watch this.”
So instead, I created this MCI treatment checklist. It explains the treatments in plain language, so it’s easy to understand and simple to use. This checklist is free, and something I'm glad to send you.
It’s yours when you sign up for my weekly brain health email, and both are absolutely free.
I’ll send you the list, and you can just go down and check each item off. If you can check “Yes” to everything on the list, then you can have confidence that you’re your getting all the right care that’s available to you.
Now if you would like this checklist, there’s a link showing how you can get it below the video, and I’m also including a link to a very detailed description of all the guidelines, if you want to know more about them.
I hope this has been helpful to you, and I hope to see you again next week. Until then, as always, be kind to your mind.
This site is educational, and is not intended as medical advice. It offers information about lifestyle choices that have been proven to help protect cognition. Always consult your doctor before making changes that can impact your health.

The physician who diagnosed my husband recommended a supplement called Acytle-CH. He said to start low and slow and told us my husband could move up to 10 capsule per day if needed. My husband started out with two capsules and now takes four of them. This supplement has REALLY helped my husband over the past 10-15 years. He also sees a Functional Medicine Physician every six months who has optimized his metabolic system, adding a low dose of thyroid medication, and the vitamins, minerals and supplements that his blood labs show he needed. He walks daily and eats a nutrient rich Ketogenic diet. Progress not perfection.

Thanks, Jane. I try to keep my videos relatively short, usually under 5 minutes although this one is longer. But if you find you want more information, please feel free to follow the links to the full treatment guidelines and my treatment checklist. I appreciate your interest.

I like longer videos, but I do better with the shorter ones because of my attention span.

My cognitive ability remains intact. It is my short term memory, which is giving me problems. I am 89 years old. I can still do Suduku with ease, but learning new things is hard because I keep forgetting what I just learned. Learning is like a pyramid. You build on something that you just laid.

Very well done! I feel that the majority of doctors don’t know, themselves, how to treat MCI.

Very good point, Lisa. It makes me sad to say this, but I think you're right. I've had people tell me that after they were diagnosed with MCI, their primary care doctor had never heard of it. There is a lot of education that still needs to be done about that.

You said it! My husband has mild cognitive impairment due to FTD. He goes to 7 doctors, GP, Urologist,Cardiologist, Neurosurgeon, Neurologist, Neuro-phsychologist, and an Oral Surgeon for dental issues. When I asked what can be done, there are no concrete suggestions. I do the driving and every detail of household maintainance, finances ,cooking and repairs. It would be nice to have some kind of blueprint with advice and support.

My thoughts are with you, Liz. FTD is what my mother had, so I am all too familiar with it. If you are looking for more information, all of my guides, info sheets and other resources are available in the Free Library on my site, and you can find that here: gocogno.com/join-gocogno-free-library/ In terms of support, I am part of a private Facebook group for people with MCI. It's a wonderfully supportive community where people share advice and encouragement. If you would be interested in that, you can join here: facebook.com/groups/1558323031164795/
