Two years ago I did a "bucket list" train trip through the Swiss Alps. I flew into Milan then took the train to Tirano on Trenord to transfer to the RHB train. Being a regional train, I wasn't expecting much. Although the weather was overcast the views were fantastic. It was the best US $12.00 I ever spent. Watching this video brought back great memories.

In Italy I “bagni dei treni” (trains’ bathrooms) are considered to be one of the worst place to go , it is better to hold your needs. The only place worse than them are “bagni della stazione”(stations’ bathrooms) 😂

I did this trip in reverse, having come over from Chur, Switzerland on the Bernina Express. Although the Bernina Express is a MUCH more scenic route, the Tirano-Milano line probably gets the best-scenery-per-euro award. Lago Como is stunning.

I live 30 km south of Milan and from time to time I go to Bormio to visit friends. I took that train a few times because I often go there by car. Thank you for pointing out the beauty of that journey; living in Lombardy we often take for granted some landscapes.

E464 is our regional Workhorse, i like it even though a lot of Italian train drivers and railfans say is estethically ugly and they call it “lavatrice” (washingmachine 😂). I can say the line is pretty awsome, but the Bernina railway is even more gorgeous, breath-taking scenery through the alps, i highly recommend it. And thanks for another great video, superproud as an Italian to see people enjoying our scenery and trains 👊🏻

I have done the journey between Milano Central and Tirano in each direction a couple of times. The journey in the EMU is quite horrible in my view as you cannot effectively take any photographs of the incredible scenery en route and also if you are stuck in a busier 5-car set you cannot cross to the other set. The 464 and it’s coaches are far better for this journey and I would think FS should maybe keep a few sets of coaches for this route as it is by the Lake and great scenery for a good part of its journey.

Thank you very much for an excellent report ! I agree the run from Milan is splendid, once you leave the outer suburban area. Most people travelling to Tirano will be using the town as a starting base for the RhB, and a run over the Bernina line to St.Moritz, which you sensibly refer to. I do hope you went onto the Bernina line, which is truly splendid. I look forward to your next report !

I have done the journey between Milano and Tirano twice once in either direction. The first time was the coach connected to the Bernina Express (and it was hell on wheels) The second time we used the same service you did and it was much more comfortable. The trains are old and weirdly configured too These look like the got an upgrade on the upholstery compared to ours. Milano Centrale is a huge station. I would say almost a rabbit warren for giant rabbits! It did have some fine food shops and if you read Italian there are two or three fine bookshops there too. I picked up a copy of " by Machiavelli there. A book I had only read in translation before and a classic of political philosophy. We were intellectually and physically well fed at Milano Centrale.

This is certainly scenic, but I agree with other comments that it is surpassed by the continuation on the Bernina Express to St Moritz and its continuation over the Albula pass to Chur. The latter is the first section of the Glacier Express route to Brig and Zermatt, and then there is the Centovalli line from Domodossola to Locarno. All those lines were in the list of "Europe's Top Ten Scenic Routes" in the Thomas Cook European Rail Timetable of the 1980s. Others included the Lotschberg and Gotthard routes (original, not the new base tunnels), Cuneo-Nice/Ventimiglia, Martigny-Chamonix, the Rhine Gorge and Oslo-Bergen. I have been lucky enough to travel them all except the last.

I have travelled from Milano Centrale to Tirano or return once on an E464 plus coaches and twice on a unit. The experience was so different as the older trains feature opening windows where it is possible to take many photographs of this beautiful line whereas in a modern unit, the windows are sealed and just reflections are all you get out of the windows. It is the same on the RhB and other lines where units are replacing hauled trains or older units where taking photographs which people do in their hundreds on trains like this as they are tourist routes. The Operating companies need to understand this when they plan trains and suitably make allowances as with no tourists these lines are not earning their financial keep and the visitors are put off travelling by train forever.

I took the local trains on RHB from Tirano to Chur connecting in St. Moritz instead of the Bernina Express. I'm so happy I did that. The train from Tirano to Chur had the older coaches where you can open the windows to take pictures without reflections. The train from St. Moritz to Chur had newer cars where the windows did not open except for one compartment in the last car of the train so I was still able to get some decent photos. Also, when I traveled from Chur to Brig, the cars on all three trains were the older type where I could open the windows to take pictures. The worst was between Brig and Zermatt. They were new cars and the windows did not open. I got nothing but reflections. I agree trains that rely on tourist traffic should have provisions to allow photographers to take unobstructed photos. I am happy I was able to travel through the Swiss Alps while the older cars were still in service.

@@johnstanton2271 yes same here. The lifeblood of these routes is tourism and having new types of stock is just awful. I have done Brig - Andermatt and had to put up with one of these awful new units where a hugely scenic line which I wanted to take photos on soon became pointless with a sea of reflections and not one decent photo.

Not knowing much about anything related to European geography, I looked up the word Alps. Didn't know the word is attached to so many countries. When you said "Italian Alps", I was like, what? Had to look the definition of the word Alps up. Never too old to learn something new. Looks like the train got up to the 165 mile speed.

I am from St. Louis and have ridden all the U.S. and Canadian trains west of St. Louis for scenery. I have ridden the Eurostar beteen London and Paris a few times, the TGV beteen Paris and Nice, the Trenitialia high speed in Italy, and a sleeper car train that no longer exists betwwn Munich and Amsterdam as well. The high speed rail and train stations in Europe amaze me.

One train route that might be even more scenic is Bergensbanen in Norway. It's over 400 kilometres long and connects the Norwegian cities of Bergen and Oslo. Interestingly, the locomotive-hauled trains on it (other than the tilting high speed trains) are hauled by the Swiss Re460 locomotives in a different livery. The livery is gray with black fronts and a Norwegian landscape image slapped on the side with the text "See Norway, take the train." in Norwegian.

The views look really great and Milano Centrale is impressive as always, but it would appear that the leg room on the train is not so great when all the seats are occupied or when someone is directly sitting across (and with luggage) !

Wow, Milano, that is one impressive station. And temperature checks before boarding, excellent idea. What is that gorgeous orange and white train at 2:57 ? OOPS, that's not the one we are on today. The seats look comfy and this layour resembles cars that Amtrak had on the west coast in the 1990's. As I remember the washrooms were a bit tacky in those too. The scenery is spectacular you are so right Dylan. Even going east after Lake Como alongside the roads. Caught the Bernina and a steam engine. The E.464 looks a lot like the Asea that operated on the northeast corridor service out of New York City. Thanks Dylan the locomotive shots are great and really appreciated.

Hi dylan, we thank you for using the Milan Lecco-Sondrio-Tirano line, you must know that this, in addition to being a beautiful route, is a very old railway, dating back to the early 1900s and holds the record of being the first Italian railway to be electrified and to use experimential high voltage three-phase alternating current for traction of trains, this a world record! Now, as you have seen, the line lives in mediocrity due to the poor management of Trenord, but if you were lucky you could have sat on board of the ETR 425 Corradia, in step with European standards; but for me for a sentimental level the MDVCs remains the best coaches, now historics of the line and full of many momories!! We Italians do not appreciate the fortunes we have, always dwelling on the problems, but I hope that thanks to your contribution and compliment as the "most scenic railway of Europe" you can make this now decaying line known and appreciate again! Greetings from a commuter and fanatic of this railway, come to Italy whenever you want, and thank you!

I have travelled from Milano Centrale to Tirano in both directions a coupe, of times connecting off or to the RhB station in Tirano. I actually prefer the old loco hauled trains as especially in summer, you can open the windows and take photos which is so important when travelling by Lake Como. I travelled also on the ET425 units and just felt like I was in a sealed tube with no chance to take photos without horrible reflections. Also the units have just one or two toilets per 5-car unit and it was out of order which is not good for over a 2 hour journey. old trains rule!!

  • @unutenteacaso6791

    @unutenteacaso6791

    Жыл бұрын

@@simonpilk exactly, that's the same thing other tourists of the line say! now Trenord has begun to revamp these carriages by removing the possibility of lowering the window... But luckily Milan sometimes gives us old trains now placed as regional services for tertiary lines, or the pilots are still in their original state! If you pass through the Milano Tirano Line, always remember to take a look at the material in circulation, you will most likely be able to find these old glories still in service! for any information I remain at your disposal!

@@unutenteacaso6791 it is a shame to see the ‘old’ trains with the Class 464 locomotive disappearing as the new units are not good at all. There is the beautiful section after Monza where the line hugs the coast of Lake Como for some distance before turning inland towards Tirano. I think the route is part of the entire experience of Milano Centrale to Samedan and Trenord are just spoiling it.
