As I understand, you don’t have to buy the supplies from Milan. I searched the warmth and cool on the colors myself online. Also it is not skipping the color theory. It gives a deeper understanding of colors. There are warm and cool blues, warm and cool yellow etc. I didn’t paint with oil before, so I was really glad to learn that with oils you see the difference- not like with Acrylic paint. It is true, that a lot of students and teachers have a similar style. But I hope to have developed my own… I work full time and have a family, so I take my time and go slow… I also skipped a few lessons so far…

I haven’t done the program but have been watching KZread videos of people going through the program. I have been working on my art with these videos in mind. I joined ArtSocial App but not ArtClub. and posted not only paintings but also questions with not one reply or ‘like’. I feel like it may be a bit cliquey. Maybe you need to be in ArtClub and the program to get anyone to participate in dialogue. AlwaysTurningHeads

I think it seems like that because a lot of the students are attracted to that style. It seemed like that to me in the beginning too, but over time I have seen many more styles from former and current Mastery students. It's not what I want to paint, but I'm still struggling to find my voice as an artist. I was recently diagnosed with ADHD, and notice I like trying everything, and it's been hard to settle on one thing. My work life was the same, so no surprise. I have since learned that you can paint whatever you want - a different style every day - and if somebody likes it they will buy it. I have sold all kinds of things I've painted, no 2 things alike. But the program has inspired me to paint almost every day, and I am loving my new life as an artist! You do you. Nobody tells you what to paint.

Thanks so much for this honest review! You’re the first person I’ve seen to put out a well rounded and fair criticism of this programme. I feel other reviews are very dopamine driven haha. Similarly I also thought the amount of supplies needed was excessive and has put me off buying the course - I think £200 a month for actual course is fine. But why so many supplies especially when I have learned from other teachers you do not need much paints/supplies where you can mix any colour. It just clicked an error in their programme where it’s a way to bypass colour theory and interestingly I’m shocked it’s private label as I think I remember a video where they said they mixed or colour matched their own paints 😮 Also, I noticed everyone that takes this course their ‘art styles’ looks so similar at least in terms of colour palette. This made me reconsider whether I want to do this course as I feel it is probably excessive and doesn’t dwell on one topic long enough instead going through different media in a short time span.

I agree re the supplies but you do the programme at your own pace, it’s designed for people who want to be an artist so just because you only use something once or twice in the videos doesn’t mean that’s it. It’s up to each person to do more art. This women keeps going on about the cost of products well then font buy them from there. Source what you need via their list they give you and buy it from your own local art supplies. She’s criticising the course and is not even half way through. I’m doing it and I think it’s awesome.

Another reason for hesitating is that i have noticed a lot of similarity in the art work produced by the ex and current students who are vlogging. Lots of owls and deer and flowers and mystical beautiful female faces in similar themes and colours. Very nice but?

The observations you made seem to indicate that the time you spent doing was not enough. If you are in art school full time you have a few hours in classes and the rest of your days (and sometimes nights) to practice what you learn. If you spend 6 hours a day 6 days a week, you get 36 a week that gives you plenty of learning time on a subject. You don't have to have skill in any area to start. But YOU have to practice A LOT. As far as supplies- why did you choose to buy the kits, knowing that you can buy them much cheaper from others? Yes they have a "style" but all of it is about examples to learn from. You can use any style you want with the skills you learn to paint your own voice once you find it. Did you find yours? No, you quit before you did. Too bad.

Hi! I am in the program right now and, honestly, it depends on the mindset you have! If you want to see the negative, you will. It is true that art supplies are expensive and the topics change each week. But it is also true that you do not have to buy their kits and can save by buying at hobby lobby or a local art supply or even online on dickblick! Also, you can keep a sketchbook to keep working on some of the techniques you are most interested in consolidating, and can do the program at your own pace because they give you lifetime access to it… I think you just have to want to put in the work. They do teach you a specific style, a more free and abstracted way of painting, but they have a section on realism as well. They explain you how to do it and I think if you want, you can keep expanding that and practicing it!

I really appreciate your review as I feel the same about the style of art produced by most of the graduates of this program. You might end up painting in the Milan Style as you finish the course. There's art channels here on youtube that have great tutorials for free and you're not under the same pressure of creating dozens of paintings per day/week or buying excessive amounts of materials needed for the projects. This is an expensive adventure but I hope that you'll get something from this and continue to grow as an artist.

I think anyone going through art school would be expected to purchase all kinds of supplies that they may never use again. What I have subsequently learned through other programs (I'm about half way through Mastery after 1½ years) is that you can mix almost every colour from just a few colours. I would probably begin with primary colours in warms and cools, plus black and white. And you can probably get just the supplies you need for each section at a time - so just oil and drawing supplies for the beginning section at first. It would be nice if the program were updated to include some of these things. I do agree that it's a stretch to become a professional artist within a year, starting from scratch, but based on my experience in the first half of the program, I do think it can be done. I would guess that a more realistic expectation for many is 18 months or even 2 years, though I'd encourage everyone to push yourself and aim for 1 year.

    @tokki88255 ай бұрын

For the program it's absolutely not necessary to by the art supply kits. I use the supplies I already have and ad the ones that are missing for the lessons along the way. As of style: It really is what you put in yourself - your amount of work, your personality, your voice. If you are serious about this, you develop your own path. The program is all about learning the skills and try out as much as possible to develop the freedom to create whatever and however you want your art to be. At absolutely no time in the program I feel I would consciously or subconciously copy a style of other people or that a style is taught. What is taught is skills and the ability to loosen up and to be open to experiment. You get out of the program what you put in yourself - and that is hard work and dedication and to be open minded. And yes, art supplies are expensive, but you can't try out new things if you don't get the materials. As I said, the kit is not needed - actually I think it's more for people who don't want to put in the time to look for supplies themselves. Also: You have lifetime access to the program - there's no need to finish it in one year. You can, if you have a lot of time and no other obligations, but it's not necessary. It's also a matter of dedication with the lessons. You are not supposed to do just the assignment and use stuff once. You have to practice and use these materials over and over again, to get skilled at it and also to develop a taste for them. It's a total missconception to get good at something while only doing one assignment. Elli always emphasises that you need to paint a lot as in a lot to get skilled and professional and that I find very true from my own experience. I really love the program because it teaches me a lot I would never have sorted out or tried out by myself and it helps to learn a lot of different things to find out, what I like most.

Yeah. So many red flags. Examples: 1. They mentioned that they think bad art is “dark” art like the more depressing stuff. I find these very beautiful like works by Michael Hussar and llewellyn. These are of much higher quality than the Milan’s. 2. They talked about people using only their right or left brain, which is really dumb as we use both sides of the brain. Maybe not 100% for every task but we use our brains in a balanced manner. Not just one side only at a time. 3. Their art is not gallery level, only interior decoration level. If you want examples of better art that’s in a similar style, have a look at Agnes Cecile. Her works are strong both compositionally and structurally, whereas the Milan’s portraits look wonky and their compositions are just a mess. 4. The toxic positivity.

@@Hdkevkch The issue of "right brain" and "left brain" which Milans are talking about is based on the studies of a neuroscientist Roger W. Sperry, who got a Nobel Prize for his work. He was investigating the idea that, although both brain hemispheres are involved in cognition, each half of the brain specializes on different modes of thinking, doing, etc. With regard to arts, this is described in a book of Betty Edwards "Drawing on the right side of the brain". I haven't taken the Mastery Programm, but my guess is that Milans teach drawing based on this book. I bought the book recently, and started reading it and learning drawing with it. I really love the book and the approach...

The idea that you can master art in 12 weeks is a straight up con! This Milan family and their art style totally gives me the creeps. I have been painting for 40 years. The best advice I can give is to take continuing studies drawing class from a local college. Then seek out a local artist painter with their own studio that offers classes in the type of art your'e interested. For art supplies, Blick is still the best deal going. Except you need to watch for sales and make certain your'e purchasing above student grade paint. You can use the cheaper paint labeled as "Hue" for large 1st layer washes and more muddy mixes. But for the most part, to learn about color and mixes, stay above series 3 pigment.. One important note: Art is a lot about learning to see color, shape, light and shadow correctly. No matter if you end up plien-air, portrait, still life or any sort of abstract, being out in nature and practicing seeing, big blocks of shapes, massive color values, perspectives.... Nature has it all. If you start as a landscape painter and learn how to see, you will likely do well at any future style. There is no quick easy way to learn art. Painting a lot, watching videos, visiting museums and galleries and studying closely the masters is the way, if you can't find or afford a local private master.

The main concern was the amount of art supplies required. and I am DEFINITELY NOT a unicorn fantasy painter. I to have years of painting experience, and I am craving some instruction and definitely want to get back to basics that I have abandoned as a refresher, but I am not really interested in painting with oil. I think oil is beautiful and rich, but it does not suit my temperament and the investment is high for what is required. IDK. I am in the middle of the program and I am not a unicorn or fantasy art type either, although my work is more abstract and I do love painting flowers. I actually lean towards folk art style more than anything but have found the course very useful. I have sold works before, so I'm not a beginner, but I have learned a great deal from the lessons and don't regret the financial investment. I have not purchased any kits from them but the oil paint I bought to use from a local art store was not cheap. I was not much of an oil painter prior but the course did inspire a love of using oils. You can get by on a more limited supply but I knew I'd likely use my supplies eventually or sell them. I had reservations also but for me personally it has been a good choice. I understand it may not be for everyone but just wanted to add my experience in because I know I enjoyed hearing others opinions, good or bad, before I made the choice.

@arlinejernigan I am enjoying the process far more than I expected. I did the monthly payment option because I was afraid to invest the total amount if it was something I'd want to quit, instead I eagerly await the opening of new lessons each month like a kid waiting for Christmas. Then when it opens I do it so fast that I am able to go back through the lessons many times and see if I missed anything or fine tune old work. Marketing is definitely my weakness so I may struggle through that when I get there but the challenge of doing things out of my comfort zone has been so good for me. Right now I am learning about personality/ temperament and how to find your style which actually surprised me a bit. I was able to go back and repaint some artwork that I didn't like because I realized I had been trying to make it sellable but wasn't using my true personality and it was showing through in the work. I also mainly wanted to learn better sales techniques but having not even gotten to that section yet I am more than happy with what I've learned so far and would consider it a positive investment even if I never got there. I am 100% satisfied so far.

Also, I noticed the artwork looking alike with the students and I was concerned as well. I'm not sure if it's because the school attracts a lot of similar artists or that people tend to start copying without even realizing it but I have no intentions of changing my artwork in that way. The only thing I noticed so far is they discourage dark/ emo type art and encourage uplifting art. I do like some "moody" paintings but I think they are referring to the more macabre and disturbing type art that has been in the art world for some time. That's not something I'd enjoy creating anyways, so I have not felt any push to create a certain type of art or go against my own styles and likes in any way. They seem to encourage individuality more than anything, so the "sameness" of a lot of the students work is still a mystery to me. If later I feel pushed to create that type of art I will try to remember to come back and comment about it.

But honestly, even that school in my class, I would say 10-20% actually went on to be working artists, in one case an animation director, designers, etc. The rest didn't. All I'd say is if you do go through one of these programs, shop around for supplies. My defaults are either Blick or in a pinch, Michael's.

Looks like you are no longer posting and I couldn't find you on instagram. I'm in Milan's beginner program and looking to sign up for the Mastery next month starting in June. I do plan to go through it slowly taking 2-2.5 years to finish. I'm curious if their paint is actually Gamblin. I know that is what they used before starting their own label. I do like how they are labelled W/CT & W/CO etc (since I mainly know about drawing and little about oils or painting)., but I noticed the Gamblin tubes are about 1/2 the price of Milan's tubes. I have so many art supplies I only bought the beginner oil paint set and the mastery brushes because I don't have nice brushes and when I priced nice one's out it seemed that the price was comparable if I had to buy each brush individually. I'd be interested to hear if you finished the Mastery program and any more opinions you may have. Don't they have a money back guarantee? take care.

Their own paint brand is definitely a relabeling of another company’s product. Gamblin is pretty good.

In one of the videos, Elli Milan suggests purchasing Gamblin 1980 oil paints as they are a good price and quality for beginners. Also, like you, I priced out their brush sets and found that they were not overpriced. If I had bought them individually elsewhere, I would have paid more. With that said, I'd love to know what companies are branding their products.

If you buy Gamblin, or any decent oil paint , you can google if a color is cool or warm and a list comes up of every single color and if it's cool or warm , transparent or opaque. Print the list and save hundreds on buying it just because its on the tube.

"Cool" and "warm" are relative to the colors that surround them. Hopefully, we've all seen the Johannes Itten examples where the same color can appear radically different depending on the color that surrounds it. While it's true that mixing a pigment with a "warm" yellow for example, will give a different hue than mixing that same pigment with a "cool" yellow. Yes, we need to understand that blue and yellow will yield a green, etc., but we also need to learn how colors within a composition interact with each other. Color interactions within a composition is IMO, the most important part of understanding color. Color interactions are unique to each composition.

May I know if the paints are from Da Vinci? Elli mentioned before in one of her videos but where I am I can’t seem to find them so I turned to purchasing from Milan as I needed to start on the course soon 😢

Why? Buy what you can get in your area. There are good student paints as well as professional paints, lots to chose from. Gamblin and DaVinci make good paints, but other companies do to. Google what is the best oil paint for pro artists and you'll get tons of review videos and blog articles covering many brands. Or go to your local store, buy a few paints before you buy the whole set and try them first.

I mean, you probably bought everything already, but if you ever feel time pressure to buy something very expansive, try to keep calm and take some time to do a quick search on the internet for alternatives. Enjoy the program and may you be very successful with what you do

The acrylic paints are from Da Vinci and are very nice. The oil paint is private label (they pay someone to manufacture it and put their own label on it). I have Gamblin paints as well and find them to be just as good. Ditto with their brushes. The only exception is their Titanium White oil paint which is really great.

I appreciated your video very much,, thank you.....when I saw the prices of their supplies and kits, I knew something was very wrong and then found your critique. I'm an experienced artist and this would have been a major mistake. Geez, I understand they want to make a profit and are trying to make a successful business, but I don't do unicorns and butterflies. Thanks for your input.

I was just about ready to buy into it thinking it was only 2400.00..They have now raised the price to 3600.00. I was completely devastated because I was really at the point where this is something that I needed in my life right now to get me out of a slump. I was willing to pay the price of the 2400.00 just to make myself feel better because I knew that if I paid for the program I would definitely follow through and complete it. I am a good artist but have found that my motivation has completely gone. I struggle everyday wanting to paint, to draw, to create. So I figured if I enrolled in this program that it would help bring my "artist" back out. But I didn't sign up because right when I went to fill in the pay.... It said 3600.00 and I can't do that. The whole thing saddens me so deeply that it's brought me back even further. If it were still 2400 I think that I would probably just go ahead and do it only to give myself some sort of initiative to get going.

At the end of One of their videos they mentioned that they are working with DaVinci to develop their own paint brand. So that is who they are rebranding. I'm not mad at it but I would just like to be able to buy individual paints, or find the correct pants on sale

It seems like your expectations were not met. There’s definitely some good marketing being used to hype the course. Art takes a long time to master. I would expect this course to get someone started in the journey of becoming a pro artist. I personally would expect not to automatically or dramatically become a successful pro artist through a year long course. I am debating on taking this course, but would use my own materials and not buy the kits. I already went to a formal art school many years ago, but let that world go, but now coming back after 5 years of slowly making art on the side. I already have a style or voice I’ve developed so I’d probably just do my thing and counter the challenges. What I like about the promise of the course is setting up an artist making practice and learning marketing and selling of work.

I am in the beginning lessons of the mastery program and am finding it difficult to keep up with their pace. You can't learn perspective drawing in one week's lessons. I am finding that I have to do supplemental research on ways to do the things they teach so quickly, such as gesture drawing and perspective. I have been spending at least 20 hours a week on assignments. You definitely cannot learn how to paint portraits with so little instruction. I wish I had taken a course that focused on some of the basics before I tried this course. It is definitely not for beginners. Also, so many of the artist's paintings look like cookie cutters of their own style.

It's not required but they tell you that they are going to teach you how to use their paint system, and they tell you that you very much need to be specific about which paints that you buy, and then they don't tell you which pants you need. Unfortunately that leaves you with one option and that is to buy their pants, which are overpriced

I don’t understand, are you an art major student (like you mentioned on your other video) or are you a Milan’s Mastery program student??? And another thing I just don’t get, why would you purchase Milan’s kit if you knew the company that sells their paints and brushes cheaper ?? And maybe the reason you’re not learning as much at the Mastery program is because you’re not practicing enough. Your brushes and painting show like they’ve been used very very little for being so far ahead in the program. I’m an actual student of their program, started with zero experience and knowledge and from just a few weeks I have learned so much and gained so many skills, even more than what I expected.

It was my dream to join their program but they doubled the price. Its 3600 now. Its insane for artist who does not sell yet. And if you sell and already skilled and succesful why would you need to invest 4 k. They got very greedy seeing many people got interested. And i would understand if price would go in time but it got doubled just in an eye blink.

Art costs money. Whether you buy their products or not. And I see a lot of the artists coming out painting like the Milans do, but you don't have to. I think your critical viewpoint isn't considering the cost for one year of learning at a traditional art school compared to one year of this compressed learning. I think a better look at the value of the program is that you're getting a lot of good information for a cost that is less than a university would graciously over charge you for a year or 4. Even if you're a beginner and have no idea about painting... you get a lot of good info, and you can watch the videos over and over. Whereas a traditional college is learning in class and hope you have a good memory to retain all the words that disipate instantly. And btw, bring your $30,000 - 40,000 each year. You said you were an art major... if you already have an art degree, why are you taking another program? Why didn't you get your money's worth from your full degree? If you didn't want to learn other mediums, why did you sign up in the first place when they tell you the entire Part 2 is mixed media? How are you supposed to learn a new media without buying the supplies? I plan to continue my art, so I'm going to use all my supplies. And you're able to practice what you are taught, using those supplies, and getting more "time" spent on those specific areas. Just my observations to anyone listening to your video about your comments. Im not saying they teach everything you would get from a 4 year college, but I think the program is worth the cost, especially in comparison to a $120,000 4 years degree.
