Mike Tyson vs Tyrell Biggs - Full Fight -1-22-1988
Bout Summary:
Mike Tyson and Father Time caught up with Larry Holmes tonight.
Holmes, 38 years old and a grandfather, could not withstand the furious assault of Tyson. He knocked Holmes down three times in the fourth round of a scheduled 12-round heavyweight title bout before Referee Joe Cortez stopped the fight 5 seconds before the end of the round.
Tyson, the undisputed champion, was the aggressor throughout the bout, but it was not until that fourth round that he caught up with the clinching, retreating Holmes.
Then, with one booming right hand, Tyson put Holmes into deep trouble. The right landed flush on the chin of Holmes, who dropped onto the seat of his trunks, in Tyson's corner.
Holmes got to his feet by the count of 4 and grabbed the ropes as Cortez gave him the mandatory 8-count. Then Holmes shook his head several times to clear it and let go of the ropes as Tyson came forward.
Tyson winged lefts and rights, trying to open up Holmes and land the finishing shot. A big right by Tyson sent Holmes lurching into the ropes and down again.
This time Holmes was up at the count of 5.
Tyson seemed intent on ending the fight, throwing and landing one punch after another, some of them causing Holmes's head to snap back. By now, ringsiders were shouting, "Stop the fight!"
The fight went on. Holmes retreated, Tyson pursued.
Another heavy right by Tyson dropped Holmes in his tracks. As soon as Holmes fell backward onto the canvas, Cortez waved an end to the bout.
"I just felt I didn't have to bother counting," Cortez said afterward. "I pulled out his mouthpiece and got out the way so the doctor could look him over. Larry was all right. He rose to a sitting position and told everybody, "I'm O.K." O.K., in this case, was relative.
Through 50 previous fights, Holmes had been knocked off his feet on occasion, but this marked the first time that he was knocked out.
Tonight he fought as if he were aware of his vulnerability. In the first two rounds, he concentrated on defense, holding Tyson off with an outstretched arm, or drawing him into a clinch when Tyson charged forward.
On occasion, when Tyson missed with his wide arcing punches, Holmes quickly stepped to the side, out of the way.
In the third round, Holmes became more offense-minded, trying to use his jab as he had in his prime. Holmes even danced on his toes, drawing a cheer from the crowd.
"The people were more excited than I was," Tyson said later. "The crowd got pumped up and Larry let his ego get involved. I said, "Now he's going to get it." Tyson said that even as a champion, Holmes was susceptible to the right hand.
"He made the same mistake back then," Tyson said. What was the mistake? "He always kept his left hand low."
Tyson made him pay dearly for the mistake. And with the first knockdown, he said, "I knew he wasn't going to finish the round."
Holmes did not appear at the post-fight news conference. But Larry Merchant, who interviewed him immediately after the fight as part of the telecast of the bout, said: "Larry Holmes was very generous in his praise of Tyson. He said he was a much sharper puncher than he thought. Toward the end, he got into a very philosophical mood. He said, "They always get you and some day they'll get him."
Earlier this week, Tyson said that while doing roadwork as a teen-age amateur boxer, he used to fantasize about beating Holmes.
With the victory, Tyson will begin campaigning abroad. He is scheduled to fight next on March 21 in Tokyo against Tony Tubbs.
Earlier today, Bill Cayton, co-manager of Tyson with Jim Jacobs, said that there was a chance Bruno would be deferred to a later date if Butch Lewis, Michael Spinks's promoter, can quickly come to terms on a deal for a Tyson-Spinks match.
Lewis and Spinks attended the fight tonight. Cayton said there was a possibility that meetings with Lewis would be held over the weekend.
"Butch Lewis has to know that if the fight is made, he cannot be promoter or co-promoter," Cayton said. That pre-condition has been an obstacle in negotiations with Lewis. But with the leverage of managing the champion, Cayton and Jacobs are in a position to enforce their terms.
Should Lewis and Tyson's managers resolve their differences (a slim possibility, Cayton said), a Tyson-Spinks bout would probably take place in June.
For Tyson, the Holmes fight was the first in a new seven-bout $26.5 million deal with Home Box Office, the cable television network.
For fighting Holmes, Cayton said, Tyson was guaranteed $3 million, contradicting earlier reports that Tyson's guarantee was more than $5 million. But Cayton said that with Tyson's percentages of fight-related incomes, his share would be considerably increased.
Holmes was reportedly guaranteed $3.1 million.

@davidvarey5072 Styles make fights. A young Tyson, in his peak, would have still beaten a younger Larry Holmes. If Larry walks Mike down and attempts to cut the ring off, that would work well for Tyson, because of his foot work, lateral movement, head movement, awkward angles. Larry would beat you if you just stood in front of him...but Tyson isn't going to do that. Tyson's movement back then, was unparalleled. His speed...hand speed, was that of a welterweight, with power of a heavy weight. Nobody has done it before, or since. If Tyson walks down a younger Larry, his jab, which was excellent, wouldn't have kept Tyson at bay for long. Either way....Tyson gets close enough to inflict damage.

You know you gotta give Larry Holmes some credit here. He fought a smart a fight as he could. Stayed out of mikes way AMAP. Tied him up when he got in close. Almost landed a huge right hand that would have hurt Mike. And that right hand that knocked him down was usually enough to end most of Mike’s fights. But Larry got up, and got up again, and took a continued beating but stayed up until that final devastating right. He may have only had a punchers chance in this one, and maybe not even that, as Tyson could take a punch with the best of them. But Holmes fought on pride there at the end, and stood up to take his knockout like a champ. And that’s all you can ask of a fighter.
I love watching Mike Tyson knock outs 🥊 my favorite part is when their bodies hit the floor you see those ominous black shoes calmly walking away from the scene, it’s like Micheal Myers 😂 💯
Larry's arm gets caught in the ropes when he tries to throw a counter uppercut. That sets him up perfectly for Tyson to throw the coup de grace. Brutal.

Yeah, saw that too. Bad timing, when he needed it most. Though it will not make any difference, but the feeling of the only time he could have countered and got caught in the rope. He was destined to get knock out.
They used to broadcast these fights on Filmnet here in the Netherlands. Setting my alarm for 3-4 in the morning to watch as a 15 y/o. Great times.
Tyson was a magnificent fighter. Patient, methodical, ferocious, unrelenting, powerful, quick, and he conducted very insightful and interesting post fight interviews. He remained so patient in that 4th round. One almost wonders if he purposely held off a bit after the first knockdown in order to administer a thorough beating before putting him down that third time. Something only an English announcer could say. During the slow motion replay of the flurry leading to the third and final knockdown: "Holmes looking a bit disorganized there isn't he?"

I remember watching this fight as a young man. There was no opinion that Holmes could win. Especially at his age. But, the older I get, the more in tune I get to the fact that Holmes was a kind of champion without a generation. He was too young for the Ali/Frazier/Foreman/Norton & Co. and too old for the Tyson years. Think it hurt his career regarding respect deserved. For his size - at the time - his hand placement, his reach, his jab, and his footwork were all top notch.

It took the passage of time to be able to reflect on the fact that Larry Holmes was a very good champion and his skills can be matched with any great heavyweight (even a prime Ali would not be guaranteed to win againsdt him). Consider the fact that he had 20 successful title defenses---fighters who came in and wanted to take the title away from him. His wins against Shavers, Cooney, Cobb are fine accomplishments in their own right. It's kind of like Wladimir Klitschko--whose career will be looked back upon in a few years from now as being something that was overlooked at the time that it was happening.

Holmes is the same age as Forman, Born 1949. So he wasn't too young for that generation. 2 years prior he fought Michel Spinks for the second time so he wasn't too old during this fight either.Just a career that landed on bad timing, between 2 legends Ali and Tyson.
Man you could see H's desperation from the fery first punch where he clinched. It was at that moment when he realized that Tyson fists felt like bricks hitting him and he was shook. The rest of the fight was him desperately trying to not get hit cause they hurt so bad 😮

Thank you for this great video. Highly enjoyed and shall watch ur other vids too!
Looks like in the 4th round Mike stopped sparring and just proceeded to beat up Holmes.
The man was an ABSOLUTE MONSTER.
This was a great win for Mike Tyson. Certainly, Holmes was past his prime here at age 38--but consider the fact that a 42 year old version of LH would go on to beat Ray Mercer and then give Evander Holyfield fits in his title shot shortly thereafter and take him to the distance. Even more impressive, LH at age 45 would also take Oliver McCall to the distance in another title fight where many people thought that he actually deserved the decision. Mike Tyson's flaw mainly stemmed from not being able to sustain the amount of dedication and discipline that it took for him to be at his very best when he was at his peak (pre-1989).
can you imagine Lenox Lewis fighting Tyson in his prime like this?
