Mike Tyson vs James "Bonecrusher" Smith - Full Fight - 3-7-1987
Bout Summary:
Instead of bombing away, Smith held to the point of drawing two one-point penalties from referee Mills Lane in the heavyweight title unification bout. . . . Tyson became so frustrated with his opponent's tactics that he engaged in several shoving matches with Smith between rounds. The intensity Tyson displayed during those skirmishes, however, was rarely seen during the actual fight. . . . With everyone from Muhammad Ali to Vanna White looking on and temperatures dipping into the lower 50s, Tyson came out at the opening bell with two lefts that missed. Smith's first punch, also a left, also missed. The whiffs were omens of what was to come. The best action in the first round came midway through the round on a three-punch combination by Tyson. However, with Smith tying Tyson up instead of punching, the expected first-round fireworks never arrived. There were some sparks, though, at the closing bell as Smith starred at Tyson, drawing a Tyson left well after the bell. Tyson's opened a cut above Smith's left eye at the start of Round 2 with a head butt. The trouble continued for Smith one minute later when Lane penalized Smith one point for continual holding. The lack of action drew boos at the close of the round. And once again the two taunted each after the bell had sounded. Again in Round 3 there was more holding from Smith and more frustration from Tyson, who was unable to land a combination. And yes, more taunting after the bell. Smith began retreating in Round 4, with a Tyson right to the head the only punch of consequence. After the search for pillows began during Rounds 5 and 6, the crowd finally had a chance to cheer in Round 7 when Tyson went down. On a slip. In Round 8, Lane took away a second point from Smith for holding. . . . Tyson continued to look for the big shot -- something Smith wasn't willing to offer. . . . The booing continued. As did the boredom. Smith landed one solid blow, in the final round, but he had little left to follow up with. The misery ended with the bell after Round 12. It could have been worse. It could have been scheduled for 15.

@Vegan Higler That surely is a gross exaggeration, but certainly there are a lot of people deludedly proclaiming Tyson as the best ever. Liston, Ali, Frazier, Foreman, Holmes and Lewis, to name a few, would have stuck some real hurt on the young Iron Mike.

@@graemechristopher4008 Holyfield would have been a major problem for him if they had gone through with the fight in 1990 or 1991. Evander was slow, immobile washed up compared to his peak when he beat him in 1996. Tyson vs a young George Foreman would have been the most thrilling fight of all.

Cus D'Amato (who knew boxing and fighters as good as anyone) on Mike Tyson a year before his death: "I believe he will be the youngest heavyweight champion of all time." - fulfilled "If he remains *dedicated* , *interested* and *without* *any* *distractions* , I believe that eventually he'll go down in history as the greatest heavyweight champion we've ever had." - could have been, without a doubt.

🤦🏼‍♂️🙄🙄 so it’s mikes fault that everyone he fought would hold onto him for deal life instead of actually fighting?! Holding onto a fighter is technically illegal it’s against the god damn rules and I can’t stand when I watch heavyweights or any weight class fighter grabbing onto & holding their opponents every opportunity they get. That’s not a tactical thing & I hate when people justify it as that. It’s been going on for way to long and they need to get rid of that shit already. Holding on every single clinch should get two or three warnings and if it continues their should be a disqualification for being a pussy.

Tyson did his share of holding too, but yeah not to the excessive extent Smith did. Interesting to take from this fight is that Tyson could not steamroll over Smith, even though most of us agree a lot of that has to do with Smith deadening the fight, the holding, the disengaging positions etc but point being- where are Tyson's adjustments. Tyson couldn't create or maintain any beneficial position or distance for extended duration of exchanges- this is not Smith's entire fault- make no mistake Mike is constantly walking into Smiths chest. Tyson had fight IQ... outside of the ring, in the study room yeah, but it was significantly less in the ring. This fight and Mike's next 2 demonstrate that it is certainly fair to speculate that the Klitschko bros might not get steamrolled either.

If you think mike Tyson is a one dimensional offensive boxer you don’t know anything about boxing. He was a devastating body puncher, had power in both hands, threw lethal combinations, was a tremendous inside fighter and could counter you to death. His lone weakness was his inconsistent use of the jab. Ant your comparison between this fight and the Douglas fight holds no water. Tyson literally won every round in this fight and was barely touched. He lost all but one round in Tokyo.

Mike Tyson was so predictable. The crotch down maneuver to set up the shots to the body followed by an uppercut. Lenix figured out the combination, Danny Williams figured it out, and we all know what James Douglas did to Tyson. Then there was Holyfield, who just wasn’t having Mike’s intimidation. And we all know how that one ended too.
