Jack Dempsey was a straight-up street brawler. He wasn't a prize fighter. He would fight in saloons to earn enough money to eat. He was poor, grew up hard, and life made him as tough as nails. Savage and brutal, with stone fists and a bad disposition in the ring. All of those things Tyson saw in himself.

I trained Mike Tyson with Cus D'amato back in the 80s. We both inculcated in Tyson a ferverous interest in 'past boxers' -showing him MUCH footage of boxers from yesteryear. He esp. became a fan of Jack Dempsey, but also found and developed respect from many other boxers as well (Jack Johnson, Muhammad Ali, etc. etc.). I introduced Tyson to the term, "leery" which for awhile in the 80s became one of his favorite words. I also use to tease him by 'imitating' his lisp and N.Y. accent...

Tyson was a lot lower than that. Tyson was 213 in jose ribalta fight and 212 in the don halpin fight. Liston never cracked 220 until 1967, 2 years after the ali fight. His weight slowly went up from 198 in the start of his career in 54 up to around 210-215 by the ali fight. Holyfield often came in weights from as low as 205-217 in the lennox fight. Foreman is a big guy. I don't think most HW of the past would have trouble adding weight. They had to fight alot more rounds back then.

The lowest I can remember Tyson was 216 against Spinks and in the Ruddock rematch, usually around 220, Liston was usually around 220, Holmes was, Holyfield fought around 215 at HW, Foreman weighed 220 against Ali. Marciano was only about 185. There were a lot of HWs around 200 back in the day but 200 now is the lower limit of the HW division. Dempsey apparently didn't eat for three days before fights and most likely wouldn't qualify as a HW now.

Whjen I ssee boxers like Lennox Lewis and Klitschko getting knocked down or out by guys weighing 220 with big pot bellys like samuel peters or hasin rahman, i don't doubt that a guy with no fat like dempsey or marciano could not replicate it.

Bro Dempsey did it against the 240 pound Willard. He would fucking annailate what's out there now . His a different breeed. The history if the heavyweight division has proved that the smaller heavyweights are the superior fighters. You can actually be too big for this sport. These guys out there now are shit. Too much muscle, not enough snap and no enough skill period. Weight training is a no no. Ali ,.tyson , none of those guys used it and they were better fighters for it. There's alot wrong with the sport today.

@HellsHighwayTrooper well Dempsey was also underweight for this fight. He was going through hard times and he still had to train and fight leading up to the Willard fight. But, regardless, it didn't matter, Dempsey summoned inhuman willpower and ferocity and hit Willard with some serious injuries that would have literally killed a man who didn't have Willard's size and hulk-like strength. There were times when an impoverished Dempsey, out in the West, went days without food and still won fights.

After watching and studying this fight numerous times over the years, I've come to realize how tough and resilient Marciano really was,...Walcott was stepping into his punches with power, and connecting frequently and Rocky took a real beating, tha t few would have survived,....but rockys bull like strength and iron will saw him weather the storm, and fight back,....Marcianos incredible stamina and conditioning enabled him to stay strong deep into fights,....and this fight more than any illustrated this,...going into the 13 rd ,...he was 8-4 down on many scorecards,...and only a knockout would see he become champ,.....and he did,...that sledgehammer right, knocking the champ cold out......people always disclaim Rocky as a poor champ who only beat bums, or old boxers,....if say just study the fighter, and his will to win at all costs, ...WINNING when the odds are against you,...well Rocky always dug deep,.and always found a way to win....and to me that's the sign of a great fighter, and a great champ....if which Rocky certainly was.

@RockawayRiotSquad Fighters that would have probably beaten prime Tyson: George Foreman, Muhammed Ali, Sonny Liston. As for frail jawed Lennox Lewis, his performance in the first round of his fight with Tyson (when Tyson knocks him backwards onto his heels WITH A JAB, and generally manhandles him) sheds light on what would happen in the first 5 rounds of a fight with Tyson in his prime. This is unless Lewis uses a hugging and jabbing strategy. He might win that way.

@LT1HILLINGHOE Tyson fired all his trainers before the Buster Douglas fight,he got Don King and died.In his prime he was great(Not the best who knock out everyone in the 1st round) but great.Btw Ali in a fight with prime Tyson would end with a 4th round KO due to the tysle that Ali can not handle.

4:15 he isnt shielding his eyes hes holding his head cuz it hurts. what a rediculous statement. i had a head on head in rugby and went down and my hands went up to my face too. i guess that being said i wasnt "knocked out" i was just out for the match and had to go to the hospital and get stitches and cte's

My point here is that there is a lot of controversy surrounding his fight with Willard. When reading about this fight (which is all we can do, really) there were a lot of signs that point to Johnson throwing the fight. Now, it can be argued if you are going to throw a fight, why take it in to the 26th round. I get that. However, often fighters who took dives did not do so until given the green light (i.e. money has changed hands). Hell there have been plenty of examples of fighters going in to a fight that is legit, and in the middle of the fight were offered bribes to take a dive. My personal opinion on this matter is that Harry approached Jack toward the latter stage of the fight with the offer, and at some point he was given evidence (either Lucille or Frederick whom he trusted) after given the go ahead. I'm not sure what the 10 count has to do with anything, other than we can see here the man was clearly conscious. We have evidence of that.

@RockawayRiotSquad Too slow for WHAT? a match that pits Foreman against Tyson is not going to be a technical Boxing match. Any fighter that can only fight coming forward loses to George Foreman. Tyson sure as heck isn't going to push Foreman back, so the match is going to be brawling and grappling deep inside. Foreman liked uppercuts, Tyson was particularly vulnerable to them, and deep on the inside, there is nowhere to run from them. Tyson doesn't handle adversity well.
