Mike Tyson Best Friend Big Joe Egan Tells His Story.

James English, The Anything Goes Show Ep76.
The story of joe Egan.
Born and bred in Dublin, Big Joe Egan, as he is affectionately known, got his first ring baptism of fire when he fought the national junior champion Steve Collins. In Joe's second fight against Collins he proved that he'd come on in leaps and bounds. By the age of 24 he had recorded over 80 wins, 7 Irish titles and he was a Golden Gloves Champion. Joe fought 11 times wearing the green vest of Ireland and he attracted even more attention when he went the distance with Lennox Lewis and beat the future WBA champion Bruce Seldon. The fight had it all and enthralled those at the ringside.
Joe was encouraged by Floyd Patterson to try his luck in the USA, so Joe joined Mike Tyson's training camp in the Catskill mountains with the great Cus D'Amato. Joe became like a brother to Mike Tyson, who once said of Joe after a particularly vicious sparring session, that Joe was the Toughest White Man on the Planet. The two became the firmest of friends.
Joe's dreams of continuing as a boxer were cruelly shattered when he was forced to quit following a serious road accident on the night of his second pro fight. Changing fortunes saw him struggle to get his life back on track. His personal life hit the headlines after his former glamorous fiancée Lisa Murphy left him for Lord of the Dance (1997) Michael Flatley. The downward spiral continued with a new pub business venture pitting Joe against organised protection racketeers armed with guns, axes and machetes. Joe was shot and nearly died and was also later charged with attempted murder.

I've been slowly making my way through your podcasts James (not much else to do when you're ill and there's a lockdown on 😂). I've got to say, I think this one was my favourite so far. Joe comes across as a great guy with a great moral compass too. I could listen to you interview him for hours. Hopefully if he gets his film done you can have him on again? Anyway, great podcast, and you're a pleasure to watch interviewing folk. 👍

What an amazing articulate, respectfully genuine gentleman, I could listen for hours to you both. Brilliant advert for boxing, a fascinating true account of real men in every sence of the meaning.

I boxed in the same tournament as Joe along time ago (1987 or 1988) in a place called rylane in cork in the south of Ireland ,and I can tell ya he was one big man..I was only 16 at the time and I was fighting a 3 times Irish champion and Joe was fighting a former kickboxer world champion who were both from the home town we were in that night and the place was packed to the raffters..I remember him telling me in the changing room before the fight to relax and be proud to be fighting on a night that you can always say that you did and will always remember...well we both had two great fights that night and Joe was right I am proud and happy to have fought in the same unbelievable tournament on the same night as he did..He is a great fighter and a great guy. 🥊🥊🥊🥊🥊🥊
