Mike Rowe Stands For Something | The Adam Carolla Show

Комедия

Mike Rowe stops by to talk about his new film ‘Something to Stand For’, the state of universities in America and, of course, dirty & dangerous jobs. They then discuss the recent outbreak of dumb rules worldwide in the name of ‘safety.’ They wrap the show talking about the lack of skepticism within today’s media and how everyone desperately needs a hobby.

Oddly enough, my dad looked and sounded just like him and was an incredible storyteller. As a kid I always ask him to tell us stories before bed, on road trips, and around the campfire. He was born in 1942, was an Eagle Scout, Marine, and had worked in many different states doing many different jobs, so he had an endless supply of stories. It was the best.

"Its just compliance..." This reminded me of working as a software engineer. I spent a couple months trying to get our credit card payment software to meet all of the Payment Card Industry standards for secure transactions. Then we discovered some actual security holes in our implementation. Note that this was AFTER we were audited and passed all of the compliance checks. There's a difference between being compliant and being secure.

That's great but I sometimes think that Mike acts like getting a higher education so that you don't have to do manual labor your whole life is wrong. Right wing media is constantly preaching this narrative. I worked in factories my whole life and my body is shot. HVAC can have the same effect on your body but that's perfectly fine if that's what you want. It should be perfectly fine to try to get higher education as well. That also benefits our country.

I went into a funk seeing how my countrymen responded to COVID, and I futilely tried to talk people down. I have lived in Asia for over 20 years now, and I was in the first SARS outbreak in China, and I was quarantined for bird flu in Korea, and so when this thing came around, I'd been through it twice already, and the biggest thing is to remain calm, but... I'm just one guy, haha, and all I could do was watch everyone lose their friggin minds from afar and just go, "Oh, well." Was depressing, though, because I thought the US would deal better with it, but no.

I also had higher expectations for Americans since we have a history of being strong and independent. The way our citizens handled Covid was a huge disappointment. Sadly, here in So California, you still can’t go into any store without seeing many customers and employees wearing masks. I suspect that they’re not that scared about getting sick but are making a political statement. “Just so everyone knows, I’m wearing this mask because I’m not a Republican and I hate Trump.” 😂

  • @brek5

    @brek5

    6 күн бұрын

@@Sigmund1924 Being in Asia, the mask wearing is something people did prior to the pandemic, so it wasn't a big deal, and I still slap on a mask just if I'm going to a place with lots of people. I look different to everyone, and they might have some ideas about me, haha. But among the expats and I'd even say the locals, like, the idea of the virus coming from a lab was never scandalous, and lifting restrictions was also accepted... People were just like, ok, let's get on with life now once we've seen what this thing is. It's not friggin Ebola.

I was in Italy the Vatican, I bumped heads with the Holy Father the REAL big guy (the pope) he only wants 19% for the big guy ??? SUCKER !! I get 39% for the big guy ME !! The pope took me way way down to the depths of the earth 🌍 below ⬇️ the Vatican. I had to go thru a clean room with 200 mph winds to decontamination room, I was SO dirty I had to go through 12 times ?? Then they put white cotton gloves, for me being so dirty they tripled them. Lead me to an old rusty door with musky smells and cobwebs and on a podium was a hugh very very old book 📖 that Moses got with the 20 commandments, he dropped some. Very very carefully I opened The” BOOK of LIFE”….. very first page was RULE # 1….. it said…… do you know ?????? DON’T PANIC !!! The rest of the book was empty pages, I joked to the Holy Father….. it’s how to understand Women !! LOL….. the pope didn’t laugh, probably no sense of humor ?? President J. Biden the greatest president ever !! Thanks for listening !! But it’s true….z don’t panic !!! You’re welcome, you’ll thank me later… MONK.

Interesting. So the pandemic theme just follows you around the world? Haha jk. I think your perspective is very valuable thanks for sharing and keep speaking up. As there appears to be another virus brewing now, supposedly. I was surprised how our country handled the 2020 outbreak as well. However it was different from state to state, county to county. My county locked down and my state didn’t. So if I had business with the state I didn’t need a mask but with the city I needed mask and vax and I.D. I was truly amazed. I suspect strongly that my county has ties to elite policy pushers like soros. No joke.

I was a freak out for about 2 days into it. I came out when I realized, as I was pumping gas, all the stuff I was touching and couldn't get to my hand sanitizer in the car without contaminating multiple surfaces. And potentially putting my child in danger with Covid if he touches the same surface as I touched. At that moment I said "F**k this". I'm gonna end up on a Xanax addiction. After that I abandoned all fear. Stopped listening to all the media BS and lived life. I did, however, enjoy less traffic on the roads. Especially since I still had to work. I was an "Essential worker"😂. But as far as my fellow Countryman..I truly learned that it felt like your on your own. Every man for themselves. It was sad and disheartening and I feel where you are coming from. It was disappointing for sure. The only commarderie was the tribes of "Wear your mask" people. Which also were full of hypocrisy. They could speak it...but in the thick of it...they didn't give a shit.

I really like what they closed out on. For a while I thought I needed to just make my work my life and I'd be happy. And I was, but I learned that couldn't be everything because I watched my dad reach retirement and it killed his spirit because he didn't have anything other than his work. So I just started doing stuff with my hands. I could buy vegetables, but I tried growing them and found out I enjoy gardening. I can buy a toque, but I had my sister show me how to crochet and found a new hobby. I could bring my car into the shop, but in an effort to save money I changed the brakes and rotors myself and found out how enjoyable working on my vehicle can be. I think when I get older I will go into retirement satisfied. I feel a lot more content now that I'm taking time to enjoy the mundane.

The problem is people that never work these dangerous jobs are making decisions on what is the safe way to do the job and that usually handicaps and slows the progress of the work itself. Then these ignorant people have you competing with others that don't have to follow the same rules and get things done faster.

I’ve worked in a few distribution centers and the problem is that the companies have or are required to have a safety supervisor to show that they care about safety. If this employee wants to keep his/her job they must continue to find ways for the workers to improve safety no matter how silly the suggestions are. We even have very expensive equipment designed to move product in a safer way but is not used because it takes too long to use. The safety supervisor just sits in his air conditioned office and has a meeting with the employees every few weeks. It’s the easiest way to make 70k a year.

@@Sigmund1924 and if there's an accident they'll find a rule that was broken no matter what. It's not fair but when it comes to a company's CYA protocols you did something wrong and those around you are just as blameful.

In the early '90s as a kid I was in the painters union and if you're .6 ft off the ground you had to have a lanyard with a harness and yeah you would hit the ground before it would stop you so I never thought it made any sense either

There was a car safety official from the 70-80's in the USA that said something like.." If you want to make driving safe, put a spike in the steering wheel so that if you do get in an accident, you will be impaled on it. No more accidents."
