I was fortunate enough to have Mike film DJ at my family's farm (Alpaca Shearing) here in NorCal. I can attest that he is even better in person than he seems on film. Just a really good dude.

Back in the day - 15 years ago more or less - my wife and I watched "Dirty Jobs" every chance we could. There was so little else on TV that seemed worth our time, but Mike's style of presenting a story about how everyday people keep society running was a delight to watch. I'm so glad he's still doing this.

Only they're not so "great" if you knew how they and the Hutterites rape farmland and don't crop rotate. Plus they pay no taxes because they use the excuse of religion. I know this first hand.

God bless you Mr. Rowe for not bowing when the wind howls, and for providing a view of people being people. Something sorely missed in modern entertainment.

There is no shortage of entertainment, just most of it lacks skill, nuance, humor, writing ability or any form of humor. Sadly, it's all sanitized and bland...dog water at best, and a fever dream of fan fiction level drivel at worst. It has nothing to do with politics and the fact you have seen it as such suggests you have a bit of mirroring going on there, might want to get that checked out. I simply appreciate a man maintaining his work while not removing his morals and convictions, even if they don't exactly match my own. I also stated I enjoyed the fact he was showing normal people interacting with each other, without any pretense or agenda other than to entertain and inform.

You really don't know as an average American what Chicken is supposed to taste like until you do. I had no idea until I went to the Northern English Country side and had chicken, it was like eating filet mignon for the first time after only having hamburger your whole life. When I try to explain it to my friends and family they have no idea what I am talking about. They think grocery store chicken is just fine and it's the way you cook it that makes it good. I am so happy to have more Mike Rowe. We missed you man !

Yes @Betty Gehm but my urban and small town English relatives in three areas of England are just as ignorant of real meat and how it should taste. It is not just Americans. The processed grocery store meat is awful. French know how to do chicken!

I believe the Mennonite community knew who Mike was and that is why they trusted him and were honored to have him in their business and home.

My family raised pastured poultry on our 40 acre farm in the mountains of Virginia very much like these chickens are raised. Unless you done a taste test like Mike did, you can't even believe the difference in taste. It's incredible. Loved seeing the Lancaster countryside. My mom's family is from there.

I'm fortunate enough to have a mother-in-law who still raises chickens, turkeys, and geese and the occasional cow. The difference between store bought eggs, turkey, etc and the ones from her couple of acres is undeniable.

I spent 5 years raising my own chickens, small scale micro farm setup - line breeding, incubating my own selected breeds eggs, raising chicks with a heat lamp… all the way to culling and processing all birds myself every 2 months. It was a hell of a lot of work - and I learned so much. I can never look at a tray of budget chicken from a store - and question exactly how they can make it so cheap. If i factored my time into the costs to raise my birds - it would be unaffordable.

Raised many birds myself and also worked on a factory farm. I'm actually amazed that what comes out of those disgusting farms doesn't look and smell putrid based on their living conditions. It's really a miracle they're edible at all tbh.

I just want to say thanks. My 4 year old Olivia has seen every episode of dirty jobs 10 times. Now we just started watching somebody's got to do it. She loves them. And just asked me today. Dad when can I meet Michael row. I want to travel all over with him! She is all ready at 6 states and we are planning on 4.more this year .

Those chickens are so laid back and chilled - they not hungry at all, which is a great sign. In a factory farm setup, they would be so bored and stressed - all they would do is eat all day.

Commercial chickens are bred to eat a lot and grow faster. That was the whole point in breeding them that way, to get them from egg to market as fast as possible. Heritage chickens don't taste better because they are fed differently or under less stress, they taste better because they tend to be much older before going to the table since they grow slower.

Mike, I've thought for years how great it would be to see a show with you and Joel Salatin (the Christian, Libertarian, Environmentalist, Lunatic Farmer) talking about life, philosophy, agrarian heritage and living and more. If you don't know of Joel, I hope that you or your crew will look into him. It would make for a fantastic episode!

Might wanna check out Joel Salatin's "Polyface Farm" in Shenandoah. Permaculture heaven, happiest and tastiest livestock I've ever seen. Joel's got just as much charisma as Mike Rowe. It would make for much better television.

Holy smokes, the "wish you were here" comment near the end just hit me in the feels. Thank you Mr. Rowe for being real, and thank your entire crew for being amazing as well. The editors did a bang up job. Keep being you. All of you.

I have a huge mennonite colony down the road with a henhouse that holds 40k birds. No point in raising my own birds as they sell to locals. The best chicken I’ve ever had.

As someone with "backyard chickens", I'm impressed by how chill those chickens were. They're obviously being well cared for... they look like Freedom Rangers...???

I've heard a similar story from a farmer's son who was going to school in the city. He had worked in a modern mass produced chicken ranch and he said you can look at those chickens and they were visually different from the ones they were raising at home. Except he inserted the word "tumours" somewhere in his explanation.

I am of Pennsylvania Dutch decent and grew up in the county next to Lancaster. I can verify that both the Menonites and Amish are the real deal. No bull except rhe ones they raise. They are the most honest and hardworking people I know.

Mike Rowe is one of my favorite humans. This is a man who enjoys life and his joy is palpable

Madame Daugin is a true "grande dame" of the old school -- there is no doubt, on that score. Great episode, Mike and team. I look forward to seeing more of these.

Anyone else tear up when they didn't cut out the premeal prayer. Love Mike Rowe for always being willing to go against the way of the world.

04:42 I can't wait to finish this episode, anything involving Permaculture values being given attention by MIKE FREAKING ROWE is going to be amazing!! I just had to come point out something very special about these chickens. They're bored. Sean and Sasha at Edible Acres in NY have the MOST amazing chicken system and these chickens here would benefit GREATLY from it! Rather than put the food scraps in neat, segregated tidy boxes, pile it all up on the ground with each other all intermingled. Chickens LOVE to work piles of scraps and get in some natural chicken scratching, it's how they're geared. I understand this farm, as a producer to other health regulated customers, can't let the chickens eat on composting scraps that provide their dose of meat intake in things like worms and insects that gather to the scraps (it's unfortunate for the chickens but understandable), but at least give them some mental enrichment by letting them pull a pile apart. They're bored. More bored than unsettled by the cameras. Ok back to the video, let's make the world a FOOD FOREST with the help of chickens! (Watch the video What Is A Food Forest? by Geoff Lawton and the Permaculture Institute if this got you curious!)

@@shotgunbettygaming that’s not our farm in the video. We have a small pastured poultry farm in southeast Virginia. We are working similarly to the folks in the video to get back to a breed of chicken that produces a good amount of meat on minimal speed. I’ve become very concerned how dependent we are on an inordinate amount of feed for these birds.

Teamwork, hospitality, prayer, dishes hand washed. Wow!

Always a pleasant surprise to see Lancaster county featured on tv that showcases our farming heritage. Just a small correction, we pronounce it Lanc-is-ter instead of Lan-kaster. (We always can tell the visitors from the locals) Keep doing what you’re doing Mike, love all that you do!

I have seen different footage of the Mennonites but never anything as adlib and Real as this. I seriously believe you are the only person they would allow to bring cameras into their house !!! My mother was French. We would go back every few years to the small town she was from. When I was younger she would tell me the chicken tastes better in France than in the US. Being a kid, I didn't really think about it much. It wasn't until I got older that I could indeed tell the difference.

I like how she took his hat and just put it on. That was pretty cute! Another great Mike Rowe video. Thank you!

I need a real delicious chicken and the nation needs about 35million Mike Rowe's.

I live in a small town in Oregon, 85% Mennonites. They have a bakery which people come from 100 miles away to get and a shop with a bunch of things at very very reasonable prices.

When my chickens see me coming they start running because they know I'm bringing yummy kitchen scraps. So funny that these were so hesitant.

Exactly - a REAL American and a Real treasure. Mike represents the Best in mankind. A rare human being, blessed by God.

You can see it just in the thumbnail, the free range bird just has more color. There is a butcher down town that only stocks locally sourced meat. My friend bought a free range chicken and cooked it for a couple friends as celebration for finishing our exams. It tasted so good, so much better than indoor raised chickens, I cried

I throw fish, beef fats, mealworms etc... my chickens go nuts for anything I throw into their pasture. It is awesome to watch the frenzy and worth the taste of free range. Great vid Mike!

Mennoite's would never ever feed other animales to chickens. Wormmeal maybe sure but no way other meat which is not natural to the chickens diets at all.

Here in a northern flyover state we value our Hutterite Chicken, and Turkey. We are willing to pay a premium price because we know it is worth it.

My late mother was from Tennessee and she always said the chicken taste more like chicken in Tennessee than from Krogers and she was correct! My mom was raised on the best organic free range chickens fed table scraps and that make chickens better to eat!

The secret to Perdue Chicken: Marigold seeds. I had a friend that worked at the FDA and who worked on the approval for Perdue to use Marigold seeds in their chicken feed. They do two things: they give the healthty golden color to the skin and also help in reducing mites because they are a mild insecticide.

Not only that, but they're an indicator of health after processing. Those carcasses that are pale, indicates the bird didn't absorb the carotene in the marigold petals (I recall it being petals, not seed) properly, which means the bird may have been ill, so they pull the pale carcasses off the line.

I was telling someone that was upset about what happened to male chicks in the egg industry (the ones that go into the grinder) that those are the chicken meal you see on pet food labels. Same that goes for spent hens from the egg industry. And for sure meat bird carcasses that don't pass inspection end up in pet food.

Mike Roe was at the Boy Scout National Jamboree with us to celebrate 100 years of scouting in America years ago. Obama canceled for an interview on The View, but Mike showed up for the youth. I'll never forget, thank you Mike.

Never thought a Mike Rowe joint could bring me to tears. Almost every episode of this show has at least one very touching and honestly positive moment. LOVE IT

Mike's the perfect bridge between communities. I live near Amish, I recommend attending their auctions and become a bridge yourself, its a nice day with good prices and good food.

As I was growing up I remember Amish chicken sold in many local supermarkets. Not anymore. Not for quite awhile now. I have also noticed changes even recently in “modern” chicken. My mom would buy Amish chicken. When my husband and I travel to Amish country we stop at their restaurants to have a meal. Definitely need to check the local farmers for buying. Good show Mike.

I guess our customers are getting a steal at $5/lb! Pastured chicken is NEXT LEVEL. Glad to see it’s getting into the restaurants!

We raised our own meat chickens last year for the first time and the taste of that meat is AMAZING! Nothing like we had ever had before. We are hooked now and so we currently have the next round of meat chicks in the brooder already -Ryan & Cara

This is why we love Mike. He introduces us to people who care deeply about the hard work and the products they produce. Keep up the great work!!

Mike Rowe is such a gentleman. It's great to see someone so respectful and trustworthy do an informative and entertaining show. On another note, when I had chickens, they would often times ignore food in a container but would fight each other for food that was thrown out on the ground. I think the movement excites them.

I smiled the whole time watching this, Mike please never change.

Thank you Mike for bringing this to the attention of the public. Several years ago I told my husband chicken had no flavor anymore. My dad was very fussy about the source of our food. We had chickens and other animals, beef cattle and pigs. There is no flavor to meat now. We are not wealthy but once in a while I will purchase a good piece of meat. Wow the flavor is amazing! Thank god my husband hunts and fishes. I wish people could appreciate the flavor of what god gave us. Fast food restaurants would fail.

I was driving to visit my Grandparents,Aunts, Uncles and Cousins. I can still remember when I pulled off on the side of the road. Then watched with amazement as these Mennonite’s plowing their fields with these Two Huge Case Steam Tractors for well over an hour.

There is a book available on line called the Dorito Effect by Mark Schatzker that really goes into great depth about food and flavor. And there is a wonderful chapter where he talks about heritage breed chickens and how much different they are to commercial meat chickens. Worth the read if you found this program interesting.

Amazing how many people think the difference is because the chickens are free range or fed only vegetable scraps when the only real determinant in how the chickens taste is by their breed. Feed a heritage breed the same as a commercial chicken and it will still taste much better, but it takes longer for them to grow to the same size as the commercial ones.

@@nobodyspecial4702It’s true that age and the animal using its muscles has a great deal to do with flavor (slow-cooked layer hens have great flavor), but what the birds eat affects the flavor. I would’ve liked to see where most of their calories come from-the contents of the two hoppers at the end of the growing house.

I have always enjoyed mikes shows. Even when things don't go as planned. He has a personal life that from what ive seen is very upstanding. Hats off to mike and every dirty experience hes suffered through 👍

That is hilarious! My chickens come running as soon as I open the back door because it usually means "treat" time of whatever leftover food I toss to them.

Mike is indeed the man. Everything he does either with his voice only or on a show like this is pure gold.

Yeah, Mr. Rowe is in a broadcast class by himself - a gem! Sincere, helpful, inquisitive, super funny, interesting - and I like how he addresses his camera crew by sharing the wares of the topic - ie; chicken, chocolate. Washed dishes, too??? Now that's a man after my own heart...

I bought one of these organically grown fully free-range chickens from a private grower for almost double the price. It was half the size of a regular store-bought chicken and much tastier but it also had a whole lot of very solid cartilage. So there are tradeoffs. That said, if I could afford it I'd buy nothing but the fancy chicken.

Mike Rowe could read the white pages for seven hours and make all 420 minutes a spectacular viewing experience! Thank you for coming up with so many interesting shows, philosophies and interviews over the years Mr. Rowe. You are greatly appreciated more than you could ever know.

I used to have around 40 actual free range chickens that had 3 acres to traverse. We never had ticks or fleas on our pets and I even saw them trying to catch wasps. Lol. We didn't eat them though as we loved their eggs that had orange yolks :)

My wife grew up amongst the Amish in north eastern Ohio her family owned the farm since the 1800's Dairy farmers for decades..they raised Guernsey cows and her father was known in the industry for decades...when he sold the farm in the 70's most of the cows went to Amish farms..

This show often warms my heart. How lovely to see Mike helping them wash dishes at the end.

After this episode originally played, we decided to order D'Artagnan chickens🐔 🐔 Free-range, no antibiotics, and no hormones. They were delivered in short order. Simply Delicious! I later looked up this charming lady and came across a video where she's being interviewed in a French speaking channel. The interviewer commented how Americans know little about nutritious food😮 What a snob! Anywho, it may be Mike is taking a hiatus? If so, well deserved! 🎉

absolutely wonderful. an amazing, honest family. Ariane is fantastic. the ending at the restaurant was funny, but watching the crew get fed, and seeing Joel's wife with the little one -- OH AND THEN MIKE DOES THE DISHES sorry spoiler alert. those normally go beforehand, but, ya know what -- here we are. loved it.

That was awesome, as a kid we would go to my great aunts house and she had chickens. When my grandmother and I got off the greyhound bus in the little town, my GA was always cleaning a chicken in the sink. Home garden so she had all the veggies and fresh chicken....those were the summers.

So that must be why the coq au vin I had one evening at Chez Yvonne Restaurant in Strasbourg was the best I've ever tasted. Of course, the bottle of wine we had with dinner was also superb.

How did I not know you was in PA... I could have driven like an hour and got an autograph and a handshake. 😁 Edit: So a regular chicken would be about $10 for 9 lbs but hers would be $56 for a 9 lb chicken.... I could see KZread cooks loving this chicken for BBQ or something. LoL

You also can’t get these to grow to 9lbs dressed. Biggest I’ve seen is 7lbs dressed. Maybe 8 if you way overfeed them.

Those are happy free range chickens!!! Didn’t even come for the food. I raise my own meat and laying chickens. Those chickens are very well cared for just like mine.❤😂

So glad I still get to watch Mike, I miss dirty jobs but this is awesome

BU-BUK-BUK...BUKAWWWWW Nothing better than true free range chickens. I miss being able to raise my own. True free range chickens do not race for food, because they are free to eat insects and greens at will all day.

My son and I raise our own chicken! I'd love to let them try ours!!

Wow. This episode was amazing. Reminded me of the better side of people. Many of the things my family used to be when I was a kid. Before the world went crazy. When we used to just spend time together in our "spare time" instead of filling up every second of the day. Dinner was often an even, and the smells permeated the house for hours, so when you sat down, you had been taunted by your senses as a result of mom or grandma's cooking. We need to do better again.

Mike Rowe has been such a positive voice for us blue collar men and women.
