Hearng this tho its no doubt James is the voice of the Theater for sure
It says a lot about the man's legacy when the concert stub reads Mike Portnoy feat. Haken
I'm so sad that Dream Theater never got the chance to play the full 12 Step Suite in its entirety with Portnoy. This is better than nothing but it doesn't sound the same without Labrie.

As fantastic as this is, there is something about it that makes me profoundly sad. I'm a huge DT fan and Mike is easily one of my biggest inspirations in drumming, maybe that's what makes this to difficult to process. Not to detract from the incredible amount of talent on that stage, the level of musicianship on display is nothing short of astounding, but it's got this strange uncanny valley vibe to it where it's so incredibly close to the original but closer you get the more glaringly obvious the differences are... But at the end of the day, Mike is having fun playing music and I couldn't be happier for him! As much as I hated to see him leave, I love what he's doing now with the Winery Dogs and Mangini is killing it in DT...just can't shake that strange feeling while watching this.

Mike Portnoy and Haken is a surprisingly good combination.
As a Dream Theater and Haken superfan, I loved this team up so much. I am so glad DT and Portnoy have finally reunited!
How do you know there were Argentinians on board? When you hear "Olé Olé Olé Olé Portnoy Portnoy!"
We take LaBrie for granted. I’m not criticizing the singers who performed this (I watched it live, it was great). But you can hear that no one can deliver the same energy James does. Of course James recorded the original versions and is a lot more comfortable with the lines. But damn, his singing is powerful and he hits some very high notes.

Saw them in 2014, way past LaBrie's prime, and he was amazing.
Eric Gillette nailing Petrucci's parts perfectly, such a talented guy. And he can actually sing.
If it's possible, Portnoy makes playing these drum parts look even easier now.
Wow this guy plays The Glass Prison intro solo with alternate picking instead Sweep

He's excellent, you can hear the difference though. It sounds less fluid and a few notes even sound a tad forced. Not sure why he opted for alternate over economy picking.

Amazing how many negative comments there are! Great video, thanks for the upload. Great performances (three guitar players not making any noticeable mistakes at shred parts in This Dying Soul 24:10!!!). No one makes any comments about Ted Leonard? He did a very good job!
I wish the vocals were captured a bit better. They're a lot lower than they should be, but we can't expect perfection from a fan cam. All that said, I don't think it's fair to judge the vocalists' performances based on this because they're not as loud as they should be. Thanks for sharing, amazing performance. Part of me though feels sad for MP... that he has to play in a DT cover band, just to play tunes he wrote. I guess if he is happy thats what matters. thanks for sharing !! I hope this doesn't blow up, like the whole Queensryche lawsuits and stuff. That would be the worst possible outcome... as GREAT as all these tunes and musicians are.
@MuvoTX

The other thing here to is this video really immortalizes the content creator.... and shows the rest are imitators. Multiple imitators can't equal the one creator. Part of what makes Petrucci / DT such an amazing live experience for me is hearing how JP picks out what rhythm passage/tracks and what lead passage to play to complete the tune... so it still feels full, layered, and with such musical depth. Since JP obviously can't play 3-4 tracks all at once, he has to arrange guitar parts so its still just as impactful as the studio recording. IMHO in doing so often times the live DT performance is better (or more enjoyable) than the studio. Thats a huge part of the live experience kind of missing here... with so many players trying to re-create all the recorded tracks. Anyhow thanks again for sharing this!! \m/ \m/ \m/
That moment when they need 3 guitarists to play Petrucci's parts! (I know some sections do have 3 guitars, especially on TDS, but still...) Love to see Dani G and Ted Leonard on here, but Gildenlöw was clearly not on his best day and TDS is not a song that particularly fits his style. For those of you out there that don't know Gildenlöw and Leonard, I recommend listening to their work with their respective bands (Pain of Salvation and The Flower Kings for DG; Enchant and Spock's Beard for TL), not to mention their guest appearances with Transatlantic.

I know that you're jk, but just to not confuse anybody, is good pointing out that they weren't 3 guitar players because the guy to cover was John Petrucci, but only because they simply were 3 guitar players.. They didn't need to be three, they just happened to be three.. ;)
in the root of all evil omg its ted leonard from Enchant!!
Mike Portnoy + Haken + a bunch of singers = a good job! I love how the guitars sound. The guitar players are really gifted! P.S: It seems that Daniel Gildenlöw wasn't in a good day, plus it looks like he hadn't memorised the lyrics for "this dying soul".

Who were the guys at the back of the audience? They look like the were looking for the shuffleboard and found a concert instead... The DT guys couldn't give this to Mike. It would've been so amazing and cathartic to play all this with the DT lineup. He's Daniel Gildenlöw of Pain of Salvation. I guess he wasn't prepared much for this show, and although he's one of the greatest voices in Prog scene, he's not into that DT material. So this performance is far from his real capability. Check his band, his music, give it some spins, Daniel will blow your mind. And you will never be the same again 😁
To everyone saying they need 3 guitar players to equate Petrucci. Most of DT's songs have at least 2 guitars tracked on their albums. Live they just don't play the backing tracks. So having 2 guitars would make live performances sound much more faithful to the albums. That being said the guitarists performance IMO is pretty good and the technique of the soloist is much better and clean than what Petrucci can do live. Not trying to piss on Petrucci I'm a big JP and DT fan. But playing live is not easy, John's studios performances are super neat and tidy, but on the stage not so much. If you don't think so go back and listen to the glass prison live in Bucharest or other 12 step suite performances, and compare how the solos sound with this rendition. Again not trying to piss on anybody, Petrucci is an amazing guitarist, and he is one of my favorites. Just calling out everyone that is saying that this guys can't play as good as him. What Petrucci has, is the merit of composing all of these amazing sounding guitar parts, and no super skilled guitar player may take that from him ever, but pretending that Petrucci is some kind of God that can never be beaten in performance is dumb and it needs to stop. Even Petrucci thinks this, just listen to the song Misunderstood from Sdoit, he wrote those lyrics.
@147pablox
5 жыл бұрын
Good comment.. But I think you're not considering the fact that, precisely, they're 3 guitar players, vs 1 guitar player which is Petrucci.. He doesn't sound so faithful to the studio versions of these songs because he CAN'T do it, because like you said, he use 2 (and sometimes even more) guitars to record this kind of songs.. Anyone is free to like a certain guitar player over another regarding live performances, but 3 against 1 is a bit unfair if you ask me..
