I think of my father when ever i hear this. WW2 British Army veteran and he loved it too. He was pulled from the cold dark waters off Dunkirk by a sailor who grabbed him by the scruff of his jacket and pulled him aboard, just before he gave up with exhaustion and drowned. A moment in time whereby my "life to be" was also in the balance!

No doubt, Mike Oldfield's musical ability is staggering, and he is clearly staggeringly gifted to seemingly play any instrument presented to him. It must be a genetic predisposition as his sister Sally is an amazing vocalist and his brother Terry is a successful writer / performer / producer of new age music. What is even more astonishing is he did all this whilst suffering from mental illness brought about by childhood trauma which went undiagnosed for many years, and he was plagued by panic attacks and crippling stage fright. His autobiography 'Changeling' tells the whole story in unflinching detail. It's not a self congratulatory puff piece, but I found it a truly uplifting story of Mike Oldfield's life to date. A must read for any fan.

I always thought he played it on the clarinet setting of a minikorg synthesizer at half speed and then speeded the tape up to simulate a recorder, like he did with Barnacle Bill, the theme tune from Blue Peter.

Oldfield and the girls. Don't need anything else.
Auntie Ann - my Dad's youngest sister - mentioned this in our WhatsApp group the other day, and I felt curious about what it sounded like. I knew and loved 2 other pieces by Oldfield before watching this, being Tubular Bells and In Dulci Jubilo. Having listened to Portsmouth twice today, I am happy to say that this is a close 2nd favourite for me now, ahead of Tubular Bells! Thank you, Mike!

Have a listen to two other tracks Tricks of the light and In the Pool then tell me and theres more???

Did Mike Oldfield smile, at least once, in his whole life ?

I remember this playing at Wembley just over a decade ago when I was there, that day Portsmouth won the FA Cup... Alas they beat my beloved Cardiff City in the final 😟 But it was a fantastic and memorable day nevertheless

Today's artists make four and five minute 'songs' that have zero content. Here is an example of how much can be packed into just two minutes. Genius!

@@danielracovitan9779 Indeed, but he was able to put out fantastic tunes, and didn0t use electronic gadgetery to hide his inability to play music or sing. I love this tune, so wonderfully uplifting. (especially compared to some of his texts) Why is it called Portsmouth? Ah wait, artistic naming does not need any reason. ;)
Whenever anyone wanted me to put some tunes on as a teenager I’d stick this on loop to troll them 😂
I remember this being used as the theme tune to Farming Outlook made by Tyne Tees Television during the late 70's and early 80's. For years I've been trying to find out what this song was called and now I've finally found it. Even Alan Partridge liked it as he had it programmed into his keyboard.
Magical then and magical now. Thanks.
