I followed Mike back then and I made the best gains of my life, this interview came out and shipped on a cassette tape. Bill shipped out interviews each month, we didn't have internet back then. 32 years old. Lifted weights since 16. Like most people who have really latched onto Mentzers teachings, I tried it all. Split, powerlifting, CrossFit, etc. As life got busier I just couldn’t justify 2 hrs in the gym. Also did not feel good/ build any size doing 1 hr CrossFit sessions (literally dread workouts and come out feeling completely spent and full of cortisol, and way less money in my pocket ). I tried HIT simply as a way to stay doing at least something to stay somewhat in shape for the 30-45 minutes I had to spare daily. Well, In my 6 weeks of doing this (3 workouts a week, MWF with 7 days between body parts) I have never put on size or strength like this in my life. Normal diet, no supplements aside from magnesium, probiotic, and maybe a beef organ supp here and there. It’s almost unreal. Like Mentzer hacked the system. Don’t get me wrong I am PUSHING. Grimacing and grunting throughout each set. I can’t utilize the partner assisted lifts so I use the eccentric mvmt and will rest 10-15 seconds and do 1-2 more if I feel I can. The important thing is to pick a proper weight for 6-8 reps with the last rep being something you cannot possibly perform another rep after. Like your muscles would rip if you did.

If Mike thinks it was bad back then, imagine how he would feel about the state of society NOW! I imagine he'd be wishing he was dead! Bodybuilders will never train high intensity style because it's simply too hard. And people in general will never adopt a rationally consistent way of thinking precisely for the same reason.....IT'S TOO DAMN HARD! I've been using Heavy Duty since 1981 when the owner of the gym, second place Mr. America John Burkhalter, threatened to kick me out if I didn't train like Arnold. But I stuck to my guns and had a pretty decent competitive career as a natural, qualifying to turn pro in 1991. I know how HIT works and it's practical application in the real world.

Should I still be in a calorie surplus on my rest/non-lifting days to ensure muscle growth or is being in a surplus on the days I train enough to grow the muscle? Would it be beneficial to stay around maintenance on the rest days or even in a slight calorie deficit (with high protein intake) on these days to limit fat deposit? Or do I indeed need to be in a surplus on the off days also to ensure recovery and growth? Hope that makes sense. I'm not a competitive bodybuilder, just a casual lifter trying to gain muscle but not put too much fat on
@tarzn_worx
Жыл бұрын
Maintenance would only maintain what you had. If you want to gain, stay with your surplus even on rest days because that's when you grow, while at rest.
@chrisbeasley1777
Жыл бұрын
That's what Mike always said. Growth happens during rest, NOT during the workout. He explained that first come the workout (stimulus), then over the next 2 or 3 days comes the recovery process, then AFTER THAT comes the growth of new muscle. So yes for optimal results I would say surplus the entire bulk. He also said 1lb of muscle has 600 cals so if you can imagine gaining 3lbs of muscle per week (huge results imo but totally possible the way mike explains it IF you train and rest his way) then you'll need 1800 extra calories per week. So do the math. That's 250ish calorie surplus per day. Hope that helps. But remember as long as you stimulate the muscle properly, rest days need to be like 3 or 4 days straight before your next workout. So a PPL split would look like training on Monday, Friday, Tuesday, Saturday, Wednesday, Sunday and so forth. He says the rest days is what gives you optimal growth. And don't worry about the excess calories because if you are truly gaining muscle the way he claims you will, then eventually those new gains will require even MORE calories. The rest between workouts is the most important. He says if you workout while your muscles are trying to recover then you'll cancel the growth process and start all over. Which is why if you workout 4 or 5 days per week, you'll constantly be canceling the recovery and growth process which means your gains will always be menial or even non existent. Lmk how this goes for you.

It's so counter-intuitive. If you want to get a house built sooner you'd put more time into it. Theres ofcourse limitations as youd need to get a good nights sleep otherwise youll smash your thumb with the hammer instead of the nail and get nowhere. But, aside from that if you want to be big and strong youd think the same applies, do more sets more times per day for more days and yet it will actually be counter-productive. Were not necessarily talking about building a body sooner. Were talking about building a body period....for the most patient persons in the world who acknowledge everything takes time but they are hard gainers perhaps have flabby genetics and they think that the answer to it in the gym is that "more is better".

For 50 years I worked out in the traditional method. Sets and reps . Of course I made some gains over those years . During these years I was always tired and any gains were minimal. Also my gym sessions were taking a lot of my time during the week . I cleared my mind and tried HIT and wow I now being 68 I have more energy, have more time for myself and making good strength and muscle gains . I ask people try this type of training and see what life changing results you might get
Shit food readily available. Good food more expensive not as available. They were saying this in the fucking 90s!
Each body part once a week. 4-6 reps performed to loaded negative failure will lead to fastest muscle growth.

Stimulating muscle growth is about full intense muscular contraction and the only way to achieve a full muscular contraction is in the fully contracted position. - Mentzer
He's right, he's always right. He was always right.
I'm not a competitive bodybuilder, just a casual lifter trying to gain muscle but not put too much fat on
@tarzn_worx
Жыл бұрын
Maintenance would only maintain what you had. If you want to gain, stay with your surplus even on rest days because that's when you grow, while at rest.
@chrisbeasley1777
Any timestamps?

Really????? If this is the way you think????, you are totally lost in life.Have you heard the word "context" ? I don't think so. How can you compare the human body with a house!!!!!!! My gosh, this is the kind of stupidity this guy refers to in this chat. Poor world !!!
I would love to see Mike's philosophy of principles/logic applied to diet! . How much protein is actually required for body maintenance? Why? (with proof based on data and in-depth logical analysis, taking evolution/archeology fully into account) . Similarly for fasting, carbs, fats, carnivore and other diets.

So, man said “let there be light…”? Another Greek philosophical concept to keep in mind, hubris.

This is way more about bodybuilding. Now I need to research Mr. Mikes untimely passing. It makes me think 🤔

Mike would be disgusted at what the US is like today, and what the world is like today . In fact I think the sadness that afflicted him towards the end of his life was the realization of these things.
A true thinker.

@@Nap0le0n99 Yes, it seems pretty "ye olde", using tapes.. Even in the early 00's when internet recording was a bit rough, it wasn't TAPE level. Plus they were already pretty obsolete then (I don't remember using tape past late 90's anyway). Great to hear from the Don of HIT anyway - why not try other methods? As he says, it will suit some, not others.. Thank you!

Something I needed to pick at here is that them, at the time. Much like most people today, think steroids are illegal for some reason. They're not. It's illegal to sell or manufacture them without a license. That's all. I've been arrested before and had a full cycle in my car. They never touched it. Because it's not illegal

Mike built his body with volume, by his own admission in an article in Muscle Builder in the late 1970's. He placed 10th in AAU Mr. America in 1971 as a 19 year old. He never trained on Nautilus up to that point. At that contest is where he met Casey Viator and Arthur Jones.

Bullshit. He said so himself, and write that in an article in Miscle Builder in 1978. He placed 10th in the AAU Mr A at 19. It was there he met Arthur Jones. So, he had built a national level physique as a teenager with basic volume.If you were not there or didn't read the mags during his competitive days, you have zero on perspective.
At the 43:00 mark he goes onto the subject of steroids. Mike believes in objective truths for everything whether we know them or not. Today we have all the evidence that steroids shorten life spans. It’s not a matter of debate anymore. If a long life is objectively good then “enhanced” body building according to Mike is bad.
Mike didnt invent this ...i ordered a program way back in 1978 from universal body building called the tri power contraction system and it advocated doing one set followed by a pump set..i was a sceptic but it really worked big time
