Mike McDaniel is a diabolical genius. After completely turning around Tua Tagovailoa’s career with his innovative offensive scheme, he ran into a slight hiccup in week 14 against Brandon Staley last season. So, what do all great NFL coaches do? They solve the problem, with new and innovative answers. This week’s episode uses the coaches all 22 to analyze Miami Dolphins Head Coach Mike McDaniel’s brilliant offensive scheme.

For someone who's never played and only watched the match highlights for a couple of years, the ostensible inability of defenders to intercept passes always baffled me. I mean, just jump a bit or run a bit faster and there you have it, an easy pick. Only recently I've come to appreciate the incredible accuracy and power the QBs throw the ball and how the receivers make themselves available for that brief moment that is often enough. It's not that the defenders aren't trying, the throws just are too good.

Spectacular analysis. I played a different sport, for which I developed a “chaos zone.” It requires unpredictable and changing coverage to stymie the thrower. I don’t know that it would work in football because of the drop-in arc of a football, and how little wind affects the ball’s flight. I bring this up because the Charger D in 2022 had components of chaos zone in how the linebackers played, tho not the cornerbacks as they stuck to man coverage.

Will be interesting to see. From the offset BB has to find a way to aggressively press Hill and Waddle even if it means those 2 can score off an ez deep shot. All while pressuring Tua on late pass downs. Pats def should not feel safe even if they are ahead by 2 TDs late in the 4th let alone holding on to a FG with 2 minutes left.

Wow - this video rings so much truer following that 70 burger against Denver. What McDaniel has done adding in the run game to complement the nascar passing offense is just unfair. Shoutout to the Dolphin's O-Line - they, combined with Tua's ridiculous release, are sealing the deal right now.

As much as I enjoy watching McDaniel scheme with his speedy offense, I think that if he wants to take the next step forward, he needs to address two factors: stamina, and space. This team is fast, no question about it, but all the running consumes stamina, and even guys like Tyreek Hill or Raheem Mostert will get tired eventually. A team that can afford to give up points will simply wait till fatigue kicks in, and then retake the lead from there. That is also assuming the Dolphins defense are not winded as well when the other team burns the clock and pile on the fatigue with more defensive snaps. Whoever is in charge of strength and conditioning for the Dolphins has his work cut out for him. Another issue with such a speedy offense is that players need a lot of space to run around defenders or get to the spot on time. This is especially true if players need to make a sudden change in direction, simple physics in play. Narrow spaces or running lanes make turning difficult, and even worse, the risk of injury is higher, given the wear and tear all the running takes on the players. If the Dolphins want to be serious contenders, they need to address these factors, and (ahem) fast.

Great videos as always! Simms was raving about how impressed he was watching the Miami tape this week. Dumb Question: why wouldn’t Defenses have a linebacker/third safety act as a QB Spy in the middle of the field, at about 10 yards out? That player can be rotated to disguise the coverage and it would clog the area Miami wants to attack. A defense can’t stop everything but I’d prefer all that Miami speed on offense to be limited to one side in flat in order to contain and have Tua throw to the sideline over the middle of the field. I’m thinking Chargers and teams know an idea of what Miami generally wants to do, if if it’s disguised differently.
