Mike Lombardi on why New York Giants are DOOMED for failure, is Maye QB1 for Patriots? | 3 & Out

Спорт

John Middlekauff is joined by Mike Lombardi to discuss how the NFL offenses are changing from spread style to a more traditional style. Plus Lombardi dives into how the New York Giants could be the worst team in the NFL in 2024 with Daniel Jones coming off of injury. Is Drake Maye the answer for the New England Patriots at the QB position? Is Kyle Shanahan the sole reason for Brock Purdy's success with the San Francisco 49ers? Is wide receiver the least important position on offense?

The left tackle in Chicago is Braxton Jones paisan. Keep pushing the narrative that the Bears have a bad OL. According to ESPN analytics, the Bears OL ranked 2nd in the NFL in run block win rate and 5th in the NFL in pass block win rate last season. They upgraded that OL with the acquisitions of Shelton and Bates on the interior replacing Patrick and Whitehair. It seems like people have a warped view of the Bears OL because Fields was such a bad QB, especially in the pocket. He caused a large percentage of pressures and sacks due to his deficiencies reading defenses, decision making and just holding the ball too long.

  • @CoC_Lord

we have been trained of many years that elite qbs look like a certain way. brock purdy is a one of one type of player(just talking about how he exactly plays) the closest comparison i can think of a player in another sport is how people evalutate curry even after he won back to back mvps and the first unanimous but they put so many names about him because psychologically they didnt know how to compare something so different. its obvious to thaty extreme but honestly purdys advanced stats was one of the best qb seaosn of all time that was skewed even more when he wa playing with concussions and had 1 bad game that was mostly bad luck against the wrong team. even after all that his advanced stats looked like you would have thought it was rodgers in his prime. dude broke the qb rating in a season....he broke several advanced nfl records and was close to others and all the others that in several catagories were all mvps. someone who doesnt look like a nfl qb had finally came to the nfl and hes here becuase his iq and he has 0 ego to help mold him the way he is needed to be molded to get better. qbs like him coming out of college dont change much about themselves because thats how they have played for a long time.....its imprinted in their brain. purdy got hurt, came back earlier than expected with a stronger arm than before and a better throwing motion. it doesnt make sense to people because no one expected it could happen.

The record worst oline that gave up record sack numbers have to do their part if you want to see jones throw deep to slayton and hyatt or nabers. We have seen him do it. Not consistently, but you can't expect that with the type of offense he has been surrounded with.

Lombardi criticizes Poles for taking Odunze instead of a 3 technique. There were zero dominant 3 techniques available worth taking at #9. Poles opted for the long term play. Keenan Allen might only be there for 1 year. He leaves and Bears still have Moore and Odunze, a dynamic pair. Next year's draft is full of good dline players. He will do it then with their 3 high picks. Poles simply takes what the market is giving. Poles has said over and over he is working the Bears long term. Yes. Lombardi has often criticized the Bears. But Poles is different. He's going to build something special in Chicago.

Now I like him and DO think he is really really good...BUT put him on Carolina and you would see his "potential" in between way more sacks and int's...his production would not be the same. He would be playing from behind if he was on Carolina...whole different ballgame there.

He played 2 games against the Vikings defense and that brought his average up to 185 yds PPG. Think about that They gave one of the WORST QBs in the league $47Mx2 and a $36M signing bonus. No one can deny that Mike Lombardi knows football. With respect to Daniel Jones, Mike Lombardi has invested his emotions and reputation on his opinion that Daniel Jones is not a good quarterback. Mike Lombardi is not a prophet, and he does not know if Daniel Jones will succeed in 2024. He is hoping Daniel Jones fails, so he can say, "I told you so." I know much less than Mike Lombardi, but I "know" Daniel Jones will succeed in 2024, and Mike Lombardi will be proven wrong about Daniel Jones and the Giants. Mocking Daniel Jones is the latest fashion among NFL analysts. Mike Lombardi knows that a quarterback will do poorly without a competent offensive line; notwithstanding, Mike Lombardi ignores that the Giants had the worst offensive line in the NFL during 2023; yet, he criticizes Daniel Jones for not completing long passes.

The oline has a lot to do with it but there are times the plays are there and he has conditioned himself to check down. In the Arizona game when he was coming from behind he had no choice but to throw down the field and was successful. A lot of his problems are self inflicted.

These guys never watched any games when Jones took them to a season with a playoff win. He carried the team, not barkley, who was often hurt. Lombardi told a fantasy tale about players having a locker room split. If you follow the team, there was no such thing. The players loved Daniel Jones, and Barkley. "He's not able to elevate the team", So how did Richie James have a career year? What has he done before and since? The point is that year Jones had no talent to help him, yet still was able to have the year that he had. Trust your own eyes people, and not those that spin tales of being an insider when they weren't! OK, you say look at the stats for a game he won.. Only threw for 150 and ran for another 20. OK if you watched the game you would realize the 20 he ran for accounted for 5 first downs when nobody was open. The 150 was for 2 winning drives, including the clincher. The point that should be taken is " How was he able to win with so little" not " how little he did"!

With all due respect to Mr. Lombardi, the Giants did not give Jones that contract to vindicate his worth as a #6 pick when Dave Gettelman was GM. All owners meddle to one degree or another but Mara is learning to let his GM and HC do their jobs. Mara didn't force Jones on Schoen and Daboll,........ they simply decided that based on Jones modest success in 2022 that he was their best available option at the time. Now after a disastrous 2023, it's easy to call that an ill advised decision but they all had to be on board(especially owner and GM) and if Jones can't cut it in 2024 he'll likely be done as Giants QB. I don't expect this season to look anything like 2023. I think Joe Schoen knows what he's doing and just hit a speed bump last season. Success doesn't always come overnight. Go Giants!!

@MGuitarZ77 they are out there. They are newer fans who jumped on the bandwagon during the Eli years. Not the old school fans from the Parcell era. Most of them are clueless, thought that winning a playoff game 2 years ago was a trend, and not a fluke
