Mike Dawes’ main guitar is this signature model built by Andreas Cuntz. It features an Indian rosewood back and sides, 38-year-old sitka spruce top, ebony fingerboard, Indian rosewood rosette, and quilted maple binding. There’s a 44 mm spacing at nut, 55 mm at bridge and Gotoh 510 tuners. Dawes strings up this guitar with a set of D’Addario Nickel Bronze strings (.013-.056). Throughout a show Dawes will tune on the fly to a variety of tunings.
Inside the guitar sits a DiMarzio Black Angel magnetic pickup, a Black Angel piezo, and a K&K Trinity mic and preamp, along with a Schatten Dualie soundboard transducer for his kick drum sound. All of the pickups are routed to a single 9V battery. The cabling is a bit complex. The guitar uses a custom DiMarzio-wired cable built by Eric Corpus. Inside the cable is a single mono line that carries the piezo and mic signals along with a stereo cable that mixes the kick drum and magnetic pickup. The magnetic pickup is wired to the tip of the output jack so Dawes can use the Tonewood amp when appropriate.

When I got to the 19:35 I literally got chills. I've been playing with and using the Boss OC-3 in this way for nearly 15 years. I was playing in London at the time and saw a guy playing at an open mic who was using one as well. Sweeping the signal down to only catch the low frequency was mind blowing to me. I play exclusively in DADGBD tuning, so this pedal is so key to my sound. I honestly had no idea @Mike Dawes uses this pedal until stumbling upon this video. I'm geeking out a lot right now. LOL

Hey John!! I have had the pleasure of meeting Mike D a few times here in NYC and in Philly area, at the Tommy Emmanuel show a year or so ago, he was called in to front Tommy for a few shows. I know Tommy also. so when my wife and I were lounging around the theater, all of sudden, there is Mike Dawes hanging around the lobby. We both remembered meeting at The Iridium on his first US Tour years back. And that night, I brought a studio bass player friend to join me to see Mike. We were sitting with one of Mike's students at a front table. The one thing that blew me away, and made perfect sense, was how long MIKE"S FINGERS ARE!!! No wonder his walkovers and hammer-ons are so intense. I think he has an 11-inch reach!! LOL Most humans are 7-8 inch. Mike is amazing. A great guy. So knowledgeable of his instrument. Always keep a MD CD in the car ready to go when on those runs back and forth from Greenwich Village to the Poconos.... Thanks

Amazing! One would naively think that the pedal board for an acoustic guitar would be MUCH simpler than for an electric, but his acoustic pedal setup ends up being one of the most complex I've ever seen in terms of signal paths because the multiple pickups, etc.

Awesome Rig Rundown. Mike is just an incredible player and it was so interesting to see how he puts it all together on stage. As usual, John always asks great questions from a guitar player's point of view and appreciates the artist as much as we do. You can learn a lot from a PG Rig Rundown.

We like to hate on the metric system as a point of pride, but it is totally superior. 10 mm in a cm, 100 cm in meter, 1000 meters in a km. On the other hand, we have to remember random numbers, 3 feet in a yard, 5280 feet in a mile, 16 oz in a lb. And those are the easy ones.

44mm is not narrow!! Most guitars are 42, i searched a long time in my town to finally get a Tanglewood with a 43mm nut! Why i love Taylors, apart from the sound the action is soft and low and they have 44mm nuts! My fingers are not comfortable with a 42mm nut. To tight, not enough room. Being 61 ime starting to get a couple of problems that are not helping my playing:( My left hand little finger is ahhmm..Fucked up,lol. Love your sound Mike even though ime usually not really into tapping like so many younger players are into!
