Mike Campbell | Broken Record (Hosted by Rick Rubin)

Ойын-сауық

Rick Rubin caught up with guitarist, songwriter, and original Heartbreaker Mike Campbell for the first time since Tom Petty's passing to talk about “Wildflowers” and Mike's new album “Wreckless Abandon” with the Dirty Knobs. It’s the first band Mike’s ever been a part of without Petty, who he started playing with in the early '70s in Mudcrutch. Plus, for the first time, Mike tells the story of how he wrote the riff for “Runnin' Down a Dream."

When Mike Campbell speaks, I understand everything he says clearly, I feel it, know it, even though I have never met the guy. When Mike Campbell plays guitar, I understand everything completely, I feel it, I know it instantly. And his partnership with Tom Petty is an amazing story of struggle and success. They just never quit believing in what they were doing, never quit working for what they wanted in a business that grinds people up. The music these guys made is part of the soundtrack of my life beginning in 1977 when I was 16 years old and grew up with me. Thanks Mike, and Tom, rest easy.

Hey Mike! Loved the interview. Especially when you talked about your dad. It brought memories of the years that I worked for Mal at his little audio shop in stantam plaza. I was a young man fresh outta hs and I admired your father. A nicer man never existed. First thing he told me after hiring me was that his son play with Tom petty and then pulled out Damn the Torpedoes to show me! I recall seeing you stop by his shop on several occasions. You two standing out behind the shop talking. Fond memories indeed!

Thank-you Rick and Mike for sharing those memories with us. ❤️ I miss Tom so very much, but you know, he will always be with us, in our hearts. His lyrics, his music, it's all timeless, and that beautiful, amazing legacy he has left us will continue on with each new generation. Thank-you, Rick and Mike, for your stunning works, and for kindly taking the time to share your thoughts and memories with us. God bless you both. - Suzy xo ❤️ ox

@Mike Campbell - If this IS the real Mike, I apologise. But I doubt very much that the real Mike would give out his personal emai address on a public forum! Any fan of TPATH and Mike himself knows his middle name, but I have never seen, or heard him refer to himself as "Michael Wayne Campbell." I love Mike as I love Tom, but I hate imposters who think it's okay to try to dupe people.

@Mike Campbell - Really? "To express their concern towards what they love about me"?? Mike is one of the most humble guys in the business, do you really think he'd do something like this? Plus your mis-understanding of the English language is obvious. I've already reported your KZread account, (not Mike's official one), and also let Mike know what you're doing. Not sure what your motive is here, perhaps you're just bored under your bridge? What ever the reason, you should be ashamed of yourself.

@Mike Campbell - You may have deleted your comments, but I have screen-prints and transcripts of all your comments. I promise you, I will be keeping an eye out, and if your account IS a fake, I will endeavour to get KZread to remove it. I should not have to tell you that trying to impersonate Mike is not a good thing to do. I don't know why you tried to do that, and I'm sure you will try again with someone else, but if I see any more accounts which I believe to be yours, I will report them. If you ARE the real Mike, I apologise, and would hope that you know that I am only trying to protect you.

I love how Mike Campbell lays out a story. I hear some of the same questions, but Rick got him to talk about some of the studio and songwriting process that I hadn’t heard Mike talk about before. Even with Rick Rubin, Mike acts like some of the details are too drawn out. Meanwhile, I’m listening saying out loud, “yeah, and what type of mic was it.. did you use more room or studio effects?” So interesting! Thanks for posting this one.

Mike Campbell is my favorite guitarist. He isn't fancy, just great at really "hearing" the right guitar parts for a song. My two Petty-related stories. Just recently, I met a guy in Cambria, California named Jon Scott. Turns out he was the Heartbreakers first record promotions guy. He had some great stories about Johnny Cougar (before he became a star), and some really nice things to say about Mike and Tom and Benmont. Jon wrote a book about his life with Tom Petty in the early days. I also met a guy working on x-ray equipment in a medical office. His name was Max. One of the other guys said, "Hey, you're a big Tom Petty Fan, right?" It turned out that Max was an sound engineer who worked on the first two Heartbreakers albums. My eyes popped out....He had great stuff to say about Tom and Mike, but he had some tough remarks about Stan Lynch, "A big, intimidating guy with a big temper." It blows your mind when you can meet anybody who has worked with this band. My favorite guitarists are Mike Campbell and David Gilmore. It is funny that those were apparently the #1 and #2 guitarists on the top two albums at the time: Torpedos and The Wall.

Jesus Mike you have been an inspiration for me since I heard your first note. I had been playing guitar since the mid sixties mostly to entertain myself, until I heard your incredibly distinctive sound, at which time I began again.Yes I was a Heartbreakers fan but your sound truly changed not only the way I listen to music but the way I play it. So much of the Heartbreakers body of work continues to touch me as if I am hearing it for the first time. Your playing style, even today with The Dirty Knobs, give me the same chicken skin and chills I get when a song reaches inside and grabs my soul. Thank you so very much!

Mike is a great interview, but Rick is so good in that he throws out the questions , and then he stays out of the way and asks thoughtful follow ups. But then again , Rick is a professional listener as a producer, so that’s what he is such a good interviewer.

Very interesting interview. Nothing like “perseverance “ and great people to inspire you.. Rick Rubin I would say would be a good person to have on your side. I remember what he did with Johnny Cash. He didn’t want to change Johnny Cash he wanted to reform Johnny Cash. I thought that was such a smart way to explain what he wanted to do fir Jonny Cash. Love the interview between Mike Campbell and Rick Rubin they’re conversation felt very natural and comforting. Mikes career with Mudcrutch, T.P and The Heartbreaker’s feels like it was a “Long And Winding Road” . You can feel the way Mike talks in all his interviews about the road and music that it was hard work but well worth it. Now Mike has his own band the Dirty Knobs and from what Mike says , they’re having fun and they’re making great music because their new album is pure loveliness with one hell of a sound and great, great songs. All the songs are different and so well sung by Mike Campbell and the Dirty Knobs! Rockin album I promise. For Mike Campbell “The Leader Of The Band” I know your mom and dad would be really proud of you. Your the 😎☝️♥️🦋🧚🏻‍♂️✌️

The Almighty Rick Rubin made the same mistake I made for years: thinking "Don't Come Around Here No More" was on 'Full Moon Fever'. I owned 'Full Moon Fever', and I still made that mistake for years. It just doesn't sound like it *belongs* on 'Southern Accents'. (Mike mistakenly says it was on 'Hard Promises', but the "previous album" from 'Full Moon Fever' was 'Southern Accents'.)

What distinguishes the Heartbreakers from many other bands is that they are more spiritual. That really sticks out and explains their ongoing success. In a similar way, the songs Something and Here Comes The Sun by George Harrison stick out on the Abbey Road album as well as in the entire repertoire of the Beatles.

Rick Rubin is a true fan. Being a mega-producer is almost secondary. Or maybe he is a mega-producer because he really cares about the music...

BASICALLY - IT'S MAGIC! NOTHING explains it - there IS no MAP - you just have an INKLING - then you GIVE IT UP And ALLOW the ELEMENTS to COME TOGETHER and PRODUCE A MAGICAL MYSTERY encounter with SPIRIT

Every single Heartbreaker does. After 40 years singing and living on the road and in the studio with the same people, how else are you going to sound?
