Also note: pure Fender sound, with acoustic harp, no distortion, all analog. You don't need special effects to play psychedelic. On the contrary. You need imagination, looseness, spot-on tightness on a dime, skill, inspiration, and transcendent unifying mind. That's a little bit of reincarnation we just saw there.

I am completely speechless; as my jaw is nearly to the floor and I can feel an instant transformation in my spirit and I focus my chi, my lifeforce. All negative thoughts and emotions dissipate and are replaced with a vibrant, glowing resonance, pure energy, the great everything. - I am in sync with the cosmic flow of the universe, and I remember what Lao Tzu (Laozi) said in the Tao Te Ching; and I relinquish all foolish ideas of "control", I stop challenging the natural flow of all things; I submit to the river's flow and instead of fighting the current, I flow with the river; my eyes are closed, yet they are so wide open.... I see all and know all; am traversing The Way. The path of the Tao and in this moment all is perfect and everything is as it should be... Some rise, some fall, some climb to get to Terrapin!

Sometimes her cascading runs and fills sound odd against their groove...and, of course, sometimes her playing sounds absolutely terrific. My only issue with them as a band is that the tempos and arrangements of their songs (own songs and covers) are generally similar, like the Cowboy Junkies or whatever, which makes listening to them for more than a couple songs. well...

On Feb 18, 1971 I saw the Grateful Dead perform at the Capitol Theater in Portchester. My 3rd Dead show, I was 20. Fabulous concert, in fact my favorite show out of all the GD shows I've seen. At the end of the first set they did a medley of Dark Star/Wharf Rat (first ever!)/something folks call Beautiful Jam/Dark Star .... an utterly fabulous stretch of music (and St Stephen from the 2nd set). The way Mikela and Southern Star played in this clip is really true to the original music I heard 50 years ago, which is kind of amazing when you think about all the jamming in both. Well done, love it! (btw, if you purchase the 50th anniversary American Beauty reissue it includes a high quality copy of the original GD show on 2/18/71. check it out if you like insanely creative music on one of the Dead's best nights)

The Grateful Dead and Hunter's muses are evidently being well taken care of by musicians such as these. So appreciated and grateful for the last 45 minutes of a different reality than what was happening. They definitely have explored the archives and captured the feels of early Dead. The instruments mesh significantly yet with delicate intricacies that don't step upon each other's feelings (case in point is the mind left body jam back into Dark Star). The harmonizing on the final verse of Dark Star and St. Stephen is a fine example of the band's performance iq, really added another dimension to their summons of the force that is the Grateful Dead, upped the intensity so to say. Keep that bag of tricks coming because you have a new fan amongst your own. Much love, light, and vibes from the PNW.

Sometimes the veil of the Universe parts, and bliss pours forth, how absolutely stunning! This is exactly what the early Dead were all about, an eclectic group of unbelievable musicians making time stand still. Mikaela is the essence of their early artistry, you can just feel her joy as it radiates from her beautiful face. She brings back that unique flavor that Tom Constanten added. He would sometimes reach into his piano and pluck the strings, like a harp laying down. Not only is their prowess on each instrument exceptional, but the arrangements, oh my! This band is as good as it gets. Great choice of instruments, and they approach the music with such sensitivity and humility. The Stratocaster covers the earlier sound and the Ric reminds me of the Guild bass Phil played. Of course the pedal steel adds all kinds of textures and represents Garcia's period of steel obsession. The harp is just an outstandingly beautiful addition as well. And as always, if you have a good drummer you have a good band. They really capture the earlier spirit of sonic exploration the Dead had before it became (just a bit) of a grind for the band, or for Jerry at least, in the last few years. Keep the Dead alive forever!

The second set was the complete Live/Dead suite and then a Bird Song encore was the icing on the psychedelic cake. The world needs a recording/video of this magic happening🙂🤩. They only played the entire Live/Dead 5 times I think, to celebrate the albums 50th anniversary. One of the shows ( Philadelphia I think?) got canceled because Mikaela lost her voice. It was an amazng night played in a small bar, not even sold out. The tickets were only 10 dollars, the deal of a lifetime lol. Heres hoping man that a recording surfaces.
