MIG Weld Stainless Steel with C25 Gas

Can you MIG weld stainless steel without a tri-mix gas? ... Sure you can, but there are some things to know going into it that you should know. In this series, we are going to weld Stainless Steel with a C25 blend, as well as a tri-mix and examine the differences.

Whoa, whoa, a video without a clickbait title, where the host gives us the 'TL;DR' answer to the video's central question in the first thirty seconds?!? Unheard of! That earned you an instant subscription. And since I'm another non-pro (about $40/hr according to your video! ;D ) who also wants (like half the other commenters) to do GMAW as cheaply as I can and still get acceptable penetration + cosmetics, this piece was crucial for me! I literally just now came looking for this before trying to do a weld on a part I'd rather not replace...

Don't ever apologize for being you.. Comments are just opinions usually given by people who have zero experience other than what they make up... I came here because I'm a novice with my welding skills and needed to weld up my stainless exhaust... Your excellent video just gave me the information I need to at least know its possible and now I will go do a bunch of practice welds on the old stainless pipes... Prep is key...

Dont you ever ask the teacher any questions if you are unsure about something? I would ask him how the weld turns out (or if it even works) if i use X gas vs Y gas. So yeah, i feel i have a legitimate question even if you think its stupid because you know more than the teacher and never need to ask a question.

Knowing how to weld and making videos have nothing to do with each other. I’ve been doing this since 1973, and I dare say that I know what I’m doing, but I’m not interested in making money off KZread, so I don’t make videos. Sometimes I learn something from the videos I watch, sometimes I can contribute to them, and sometimes I disagree with something I see. Nothing wrong with that. It’s how you say it.

Hi Bob-another great video! 3 questions-1)The steel looks "as received" don't you clean the edges of the metal with abrasive or solvent? 2) I see one comment from part 1 where the question is "doesn't the weld get less stainless because of carbon pick-up from the C25 " but doesn't the trimix do the same? 3) Doesn't the helium increase the arc voltage and that is why the bead profile is different ? Hope you make sense of these questions.Best regards, Steve.

Hello Bob, thanks for showing me that I can do stainless with C25 gas. This is the only gas I have currently because I mainly do carbon steel welding. My machine is a Hobart Handler 190 with 240 AC input. Obviously I’m limited with this smaller machine to only short circuit method, and from what I understand C25 can’t do spray transfer even if I had the heat. Question: are there any other metals besides carbon steel and stainless that C25 can weld ok? Also, why do you pull back at end of your weld to fill the crater instead of letting off the trigger & zapping it again to fill the crater? Have I been terminating my welds incorrectly all these years? Thank you sir 😎👍

I found at my last job we had some welds get eaten out by chemical in washers. This could have been from the c25 on one of the welders I found, or maybe one of the guys used regular steel wire. I remember reading the the carbon from the gas bonds with the metal and is then not as chemical resistant. Any thoughts on that? I'm looking into this for welding SS at home.

I think those kinds of questions are super important and you shouldn't take it personally. Knowing that that's a normal feature could prevent someone from wasting time trying to get their welds to lay flat the way they do with mild steel. I believe it's more of a characteristic of stainless, stainless is a austenitic steel so it's crystalline like a hardened steel, and may take more heat input and react to it differently

  • @shexdensmore

Hi everybody, for my experience what you did is good for a strictly welding point but is not for a metallurgy one. Welding stainless with CO2 mix gasses make the joint good and strong but it will got corrosion issues, especially pitting rust will come out soon. Stainless steel, especially the 316, has got chromium and molybdenum that need to make a pure thin layer in order to protect the inner metal from corrosion. Using an oxidating gas mix like the C25 the alloy is not able to make that layer and so you will obtain a joint without the most needed feature of stainless: the corrosion resistance.

birdfighter0307 when you say regular wire I assume you mean carbon steel. If you weld stainless with carbon steel wire the weld will be brittle due to the drop of chromium content in where the two different metals meet. The chromium and nickel content drop into the hardenable range.

Dont worry so much what viewers say until they can put there work up for judgement. And with 75 25 gas you can expect that result

Great video.. i had to make a "quick" repair on 304 stainless Overhead using c25. .030 308l wire.. Well found out it is impossible.. not sure why? tried it In both my feeders.. with all setting adjustments.. 😣! Had to tig it.. to get the job done. Worked ok..ish in the flat and horz. positions.. I use to use tri -mix argon, helium, and co2 but never tried it with o2?

I was given 90%/5%/5% (AR/CO2/O2) in place of 75%/25% (AR/CO2). Is this an acceptable substitute for 'general' steel MIG applications?

Point of shielding gas is to keep the O2 away from the weld.

At one time I worked for Crane Freuhauf trailers they used 5% co2 on all mild steel and stainless steel mig welding. The gas was piped around the factory so they did not want multiple mix's so it was just 95/5 and 100% argon available.

Yes, this is a very common gas mixture in both the U.K. and Australia. The oxygen content causes the weld pool to have less surface tension, causing it to "wet out" more, creating a flatter profile. Generally oxygen consists of 2-5% of the gas mixture with varying amounts of CO2 and argon; with a higher CO2 percentage for thicker sections. This produces x-ray quality welds on mild and carbon steels but does, however, leave a heavy surface oxide on stainless steels, similar to the one shown in this video - which requires an extensive amount of pickling paste in order to achieve a bright shiny finish.
