I used to work at a gas station, and the customers were assholes every day, and I'd work late into the night until there was no one left awake, and I eventually stopped talking to people completely outside of work. But I came home one night and saw a bright orange spider outside my front door, just above it. We had a problem with flying bugs at my house during the summer, not anything obscene, but enough to be annoying. I'd catch them sometimes and release them into the spider's web. I named her Garfield before I knew she was a lady, and thought I could start calling her Ariel, but it never stuck like Garfield did, she eventually had some fuzzy black stripes develop on her legs, and I decided to look up what type of spider she was. A cat-faced orbweaver, totally rare in the region I live in. Their abdomens eventually form into a tiny cat-shaped face, with a round head, and two tiny points at the top like ears. I found out they lived until the autumn after they're born. So I'd come home and say hi to her, maybe catch her dinner if I saw it. Never tried to pet her or hold her, orbweavers are spiders that stay in their web. They just wait for the world to come to them. It's their home. Garfield would never find a mate, she was a rare treasure as she was. I expected she wouldn't, but I still held out hope that I'd see another tiny spider one day, as if she lived forever. She died in mid-December, living as long as she could. This album is so spot on. Too painful to stay, too afraid to be left alone. I remember seeing Midwife's performance in 2019 and it was absolutely stunning in-person. Seriously, you pay so much attention to the organization of your songs, it's really appreciated. I love all the bands that the Flenser is associated with but Midwife is a vibe you can't cultivate anywhere else, a very unique sound and feeling. And a completely individual experience from listening to the songs as compared to singing them out loud yourself. Great band and artist.
