So fascinating how sky goes from grey to tornado green and back to grey. Smart to park and wait it out.

Yeah, we don’t get tornados in my city, except one time we did. The sky was kind of an ocean green. People here didn’t know what was happening. It looked like a tornado at first, so some people recognized it. But then it turned into a big wedge about a 3/4 mile across. At that point it was rated an EF4, but it was really an EF5. The recorded wind speed was 1mph below an EF5. Like that would make a difference. People drove right into it, because the cloud level was so low and it was so dark, it was hard to see a wedge shape. It ripped their cars to pieces and they had no chance. It was on Friday, Jul31’st, 1987. That day became known as Black Friday. It killed 27 people and injured 300. Two years later, on July 31’st, the sky turned green again and then it go very dark. The street lights came on downtown at 4:00pm. At that time of year it usually stays light until 9:30pm. A few funnel clouds were spotted near downtown and one touched down on the West end industrial area. Caused about $1 million in damages but no one was seriously injured. People who saw those green skies will never forget them. They still keep a close watch on the skies in the last week of July. Never know when it might happen again.

If we got green skies like that it means hail. We don't get tornadoes, except for a couple that has turned up, but nothing like you guys get in the US.

The sky went green like a pop bottle just before the Edmonton Canada tornado. I was in a supermarket. Those big plate glass widows were flexing in & out...... I'll never forget it.

I was there too. Luckily, I had just headed South on my motorcycle. I hit the storm on Highway 2A just before Wetaskiwin, just missed the tornado. It was a complete white out of rain and hail. Couldn’t see 3 feet in front of me at 60 mph. I put the brakes on but since I couldn’t see anything and the wind and rain were still hitting me, I didn’t realized when was stopped, except my bike was wobbling so much I had to put my foot down. Weirdest sensation ever. So disorienting. I got off my bike and walked about 20 yards into the ditch because being near the road was too dangerous. Rode the rest of the way to Calgary before I hear the news that there was a tornado in Edmonton.

I couldn't tell if this was a derecho or just a heavy rain. By the time the rain starts anything that would have shown the wind's power was shrouded by rain. The static on the radio was grating.

Wow! U were wise 2 pull into the parking lot ahead of time.

Any reason why you were listening to just Static on radio. I did hear slight weather type news at start. but Mainly rest just Static on Radio. You could have turned it way down or off.

Derecho is a new word to me. Good to know because I think I'll hear it more often now.

Just like "bomb cyclone". They're always coming up with new names for things but it's really just a microburst. Just like "bomb cyclone" is a nor easter.

@@binxthekitty54 The word derecho is not new. It's been used since 1888 by Gustavus Detlef Hinrichs in his account of the event that crossed iowa in 1877. So the term has been regularly used sense then for these rare events.

@@binxthekitty54 A Microburst and a derecho are vastly different as a microburst only last a few minutes and a derecho can last consistently with strong winds for 30 minutes to an hour as seen in Iowa.

Yeah this video was meh. They must not have gotten hit that hard in this area.

Was this Route 30? Can't tell if you are east or westbound. I work in Mentone, IN but I'm only slightly familiar with the area.

I looked up the address of 8020.net, and they are at 1701 South 400 East, Columbia City, IN. Since they're on the right (north) side of Rt. 30, the video starts showing George headed westbound on Rt. 30.

At first I thought you had parked to go to work. 😊 Why did you choose a carpark at a hospital? Was this incase you got injured? If I am ever back in the USA I will remember, if needed to put the nose of vehicle to the wind. Mind you the type of storms we are getting here this winter this might be useful to remember. Our storm season normally goes from October to January, then cyclone (like hurricanes) season starts from late January to April. We don't normally get winter storms at all. Thanks for sharing and hello from Queensland Australia. 😊

Are the tornado sirens ever used to warn people for derecho storms? I wonder how many people are unaware of an arriving derecho storm and are hit by it.

We had one in 2020 that was tornado warned because of 90 mph winds.

Are these Derecho storms something new, or have always happened in the midwest? I could see the wind driving the rain in waves along the blacktop.

Yeah. The main purpose for most sirens is just to warn of upcoming life-threatening situations, mostly weather-related. Sirens in Cedar Rapids went off for this monstrosity thanks to the communities who were (somehow) warning the others who were next.

I'm 67 first time I ever heard of derecho was 2008 southern Illinois did a lot of damage was with power for a week.

It certainly did, although it didn't set off the horn or any other audible alarm.

0 to 12 minutes nothing really to see. 12 to 16 minutes you can't see anything. 16 minutes on and the world slowly reappears. 😎👀🌦

Twelve minutes to get to the first drop of rain? Parking skills weren't that impressive, btw! :-)

First ten minutes a waste of time..... Wipers ruin the last part.
