I think this whole "dance" was supposed to be a "love bomb" -- she didn't know the rules and that put her at an advantage and more likely to win, the other girls knew if you bump into someone you have to fall down and you're out, she didn't know that and so she stayed in the longest.

I don’t regard this movie as a masterpiece, there are a few flaws. Just a few minor flaws that detract from it. But the cinematography and editing is amazing. Aside from some of the shots of the tree lines, the spacing Aster uses, and the panning is incredible. The two best scenes, which are also the beginning and ends of the story, are the scene in the meadow, right before the shrooms trip. So much information is communicated right there, and it sets up the rest of the story. The maypole is really the end of the movie. Notice it’s the first time in the film Dani smiles. This is the moment Dani goes from the toxic outsiders cult, (Christian, mark, and josh) to being with the empathetic, (albeit murderous) Hagra cult. This moment is the climax of the film. You’ve gone from seeing Dani as this almost bullied outsider, and remember those 3 are treating somebody who just lost everything so horribly, to this accepted happy member of a family. You’ve now seen the real story. Everything before the meadows scene was foreplay. Everything after the dance scene is the after sex glow, and some post coital cuddling. I also love how Dani picks the yellow flowers for Christian. The colour yellow often foreshadowing who is going to die in this film.

Not to mention this 1:30, she bumped into someone and the other girl when out of the circle (I think) and no one stop the festival to say "you're out" to Dani, maybe it was all apart of their plan to make Dani the may queen, because Dani obviously didn't know what was going on or what to do, drugged or not.

@@zoe_ward Actually JC is right, but he's talking the "real world" thing. But both are right! @imbroke1992

@@zoe_wardit isn’t meant to be taken metaphorically, and even if it is, then it still doesn’t make sense. The cult kills people and tries to force Dani to do things she isn’t ready for (like drugging her, trying to forcefully feed her, making her watch people literally kill themselves after her family’s death). It’s no secret that the cult is evil in the film. But they are not supposed to be found family. It is just Dani trading one toxic relationship for something worse under the guise of care. If we were to take the cult metaphorically, it still represents an emotionally vulnerable person latching onto toxicity for comfort - almost like a drug. The cult turns Dani into something worse through its influence while giving her the impression of comfort. This is NOT an empowering movie.

That's the point, I think. Cults, successful ones like established religions, draw you in by being fun, friendly and loving but then they can be very abusive and deadly.

Probably not. As manipulative as cults can be, they probably felt some kind of 'essence' within her. 4:38 oh yeah, they definitely intended for Danny to win. She didn't know the rules, didn't know you're supposed to "fall out" if you bump into someone (thus putting her at an advantage) plus at 4:38 it looks like the girl on the right was looking at the girl on the left right before they bumped into each other, it looked intentional. Like "alright, she's totally immersed now."

Aster’s writing is incredible. Notice how they keep stopping the dance until she finally gives in to the euphoria, and when she starts to get concerned about Christian, it immediately starts again. These people genuinely care for her, and she finally feels held (literally, in the dance)

@@zoe_ward Actually JC is right, but he's talking the "real world" thing. But both are right! This scene clearly feels like they embrace her like a family and I really felt happy for Danny that she finally smiled and enjoyed herself. At the same time, if we land to Earth, cults do that.

I think what people keep missing in this movie is the trauma and horror that Dani has already experienced up until the trip. Horror is inevitable no matter where you go and she’d rather have a family that loves her than experience further trauma of being with someone who does not love and see her. It was more frightening to be with Christian. I’d rather be with Pelle and deal with some occasional weird shit

It was just gibberish, but the implication is that not only was Dani having fun and smiling for the first time in the movie, but they could communicate without proper language, via tone and body language. They were communicating joy. At the same time you have Christian, the only one left dressed differently, hunched over (whilst everyone has these beautiful lotus meditative poses) looking miserable. Of course, Christian can’t communicate. That’s christians fatal flaw. Mark is a loser poon hound. Josh is a pseudo intellectual looking for fame. Christian can’t communicate. They all die because of their flaws.
