I got about 0.35 miles radius. One radio operator in the interior of a single family residence, the other in a vehicle traveling NB. The channel monitor mode is great where there's not much activity occurring.

6 miles out of an FRS, or any UHF radio over flat terrain is really good, as the curvature of the earth starts to get in the way at that point. FRS range in more suburban areas is usually around 1/4 to 1 mile.

Testing should include being outside of the vehicle. The cab/ roof does block some of the signal. Also holding to radio vertically will help. Even standing on the door sill and using the top of the truck as a ground plane should help. Andy N3___.

Have you ever heard of the old saying..... If it isn't broken, don't fix it? This my opinion on Midland UHF Handheld radios. The GXT 1000 is about the best as far as range is concerned. They put out 1, 2.5 & 5 Watts. The 5 Watts is the maximum a GMRS Handheld can put out in the United States and in Canada, the limit is 2 Watts and no external antenna is permitted the last I heard. I have the 5 Watt mobile radio with a magnet antenna and with two of these radios, I can talk about 25 miles from car to car but the terrain is flat on this portion of the interstate. I upgraded to the 15 Watt model and was impressed with both cars getting over 40 miles car to car on the flat interstate with the magnetic antennas that the radios come with. With these radios, I was able to talk back to my house with a fiberglass base antenna 40 feet above the roof and a 6 Db antenna on the car. I finally settled with the 40 watt mobile/base radio and with two of these exact models, base to car, I have been able to talk from Baker City, Oregon to Oxbow at the Idaho/Oregon state line at the Snake River. The car in Oxbow was pretty high up on a forest service road and so I was able to talk home in Baker City and was able to talk to a station in Eagle Idaho which is very close to Boise. These Midland radios are the best performing radios in my opinion as far as distance is concerned and the 15 Watt & 40 Watt mobile/base models are also enabled for repeater services. I have purchased the lower power models of the Midland Handheld radios over the years and I believe spending the extra $35.00 for the higher end models are well worth it. You do go through AA batteries fairly fast when on high power. If you are on low and medium power, you still can get a couple of miles to several miles but on high power with two of these models, I can talk from Baker City to Haines (11 miles), and that is with clear reception on both ends and with both of us standing outside the cars and not inside. I'm not saying anything negative with other brands but my experience with Midland Radios goes back to 1970 with the model 13-880B Side Band CB radio and other models throughout the years including their VHF Marine models putting out 25 Watts. All of them worked well. The new Xtra Talk Radio that uses 3 AAA batteries and has rechargeable batteries as well does not have the longevity and I do not believe they have the full 5 Watt power output even though they advertise 38 miles. They are quality made but they do not have the endurance as the GXT 1000 or the distance that I have heard from other Midland users. Just my opinion but I have experienced Midland and Radio Shack/Tandy equipment for 50 years for amateur and CB Radio equipment and have never had an issue with them but have with other brands that have come and gone. The equipment made in Japan in those days were best and then South Korea, Philippines and then China. There is a manufacturer in Israel that I cannot remember the name of that has a super reputation for making the best long distance two radio equipment on the VHF and UHF bands.
