I wish ladies were recording their self as well in same time. I m pretty sure they heard you better quality than you heard them. Also when you were out of range you couldn’t hear them, but maybe they heard you. Thanks for range test. Very useful video.

If you do a plot around your jeep with a field strength meter you may find that your antenna works better in one direction than the other. Think of an antenna like a light bulb, in fact it is just at a different frequency than visible light. The body of your jeep will partially block your signal.

Exactly. Not sure what their mounting limits are but putting it above the vehicle would have been ideal. Either way, great radios and the sound at ten miles was impressive. Good radio and I like that 6db antenna.

Good work on the install and a great video showing range. The antenna mounted on the rear of the vehicle will reflect signal to the rear of the vehicle because it’s mounted lower than the roof. I know it’s not always practical to mount an antenna on the roof because of parking garages etc. Your mount is similar to a CB mounting on the rear bumper. Remember CB signal because of its frequency can bounce, additionally the CB antenna is a 102” whip with a significant amount of the antenna above the vehicle. I’d love to see you guys do some additional experimentation. Thank you for your service.

Antenna makes the difference.

You should find a local repeater that's open or set up your own repeater and extend that range. Depending how high you can get repeater's antenna, you may get 75 to an even 125 miles

Cool video those radios really reach out. Just think of how much distance y’all would cover with a repeater

Cool, you guys did a great job on the install, I wanted to ask, I have both a GMRS and HAM radio licenses thus running a few radios, I wanted to ask you, is it worth looking into getting a retired SUV since they would basically be set up to handle a lot of comm’s equipment

Great video! Where did you get the mount on top of the dash? Doesn't look like it comes with it.

Does the location of the radio base interfere with your compass, since it’s right underneath?

Would've been better if you mounted your antenna higher using a trunk lip mount on top of door lip. Mounting it next to the vehicle body and lower is probably blocking the signal and also creating a beam type wave then omni directional. I've been watching these videos and don't know why they install antennas lower than the top of the vehicle roof. Higher the better.

Ok, I'm old army signal corps. So what is the actual distance. Straight line plot, not road miles.

With public repeaters the range is nearly limitless. I've talked with people 600 miles away with their 40watt radio using repeaters. Insane.

I call BS! Maybe 60 miles, and that is a stretch. But no way you talked 600 miles.

were you commuting with a handheld unit in the test?

Can someone with a mobile GMRS radio scan channels to find others talking?

I have the mx275, love it.. but the 6db gain ant needed to be "tuned" for lowest swr reading.. I had to shorten the ant about an inch to get to 1:2 standing wave ratio.. it was at 2:5 set with out cutting the ant...now it transmits even futher. My ant is mounted on the driver's side fender under the hood channel near the firewall..

Mount your antenna higher. You're losing a lot due to capacitance between the antenna and the body of your Jeep. 73 de AB0EZ.

What channel were you using?

@@911Strong thanks. Antenna placement and length have more impact on distance than power. But you were on a high powered channel, which does help.

Do you know if you can talk to people with cb radios with these radios?

Surplus commerical Motorolas work great but Midland makes a more modern turn key solution. The Motorola mobiles require a little more radio nerd knowledge and in some cases older DOS based computers to program.

Nice test but being police officers you should know the law to use the radio you need an FCC license and transmit your call sign when you begin and every 15 minutes there after an FCC law

Thanks for your concern, but as police officers are very protective of our personal information being out there. And if you have an FCC license you can look up your information by call sign. So that’s why you don’t hear it.

@@911Strong OK I understand but the reason I said anything is because I've seen a lot of these kind of video's where people make these videos and forget to mention about needing a license and thank you for being heros and your wives being heroins and saving lives.
