Middle Earth: Shadow of War (The Movie)

Ойындар

Talion and Celebrimbor have crafted a new ring of power to defeat Sauron, but they must first gather their army. This is the story of the game Middle Earth: Shadow of War, edited into a movie. This video has been optimized to look the best in HDR for devices that support that, but I have put in the work to make sure it looks great in SDR as well.
If you aren't familiar with my work, my goal is to take a game's story, and edit it into a format where anybody can enjoy and understand the story, whether they play games or not. For those who have played the game, I find that rewatching the story in this more compact form can add a lot to the experience, because the full story will stay more fresh in your mind the entire time, rather than being split across several gameplay sessions filled with a lot of moments that aren't entirely crucial to the story. Then obviously, for those who don't play games, I'm bringing them a story they might not have ever been able to experience otherwise.
Because I want this to feel as close to a real movie experience as possible, I try to remove as many gameplay distractions as I can. Thankfully, this game has a no HUD mode, which allows me to disable just about everything that appears on screen. In most movies in the past, I've needed to use some VFX to remove some of the HUD elements that are left, but in this case, I didn't need any of that. However, in this movie I've also edited the footage to fit an ultrawide aspect ratio. In order to do that, I'm acting as a virtual camera man, animating the camera up and down throughout every single shot of the movie, often times requiring dozens of animation keyframes for longer shots.

If you want to support my work, liking, subscribing, commenting, and sharing are the easiest ways to do so, and KZread Premium helps too, but I also have a Patreon which helps the most:
/ andygilleand
Every supporter will gain access to a blog post for each project that I update every day with details of what I did that day, and projections for when I expect the project to be done and be released. People who spend a bit more can gain access to full quality downloads of my movies, without all the compression youtube adds to them, and supporters at the highest tier can even gain access to see early cuts of my movie, as well as HDR downloads.
As always, if you've enjoyed this story, make sure to support the developers by buying the game if you can. While I try my best to represent the game's story, my movies are not a full game walkthrough. There are always plenty of aspects of a game my movies will never cover. In the case of Shadow of War, my movie actually only represents about half of all of the missions in the game, so there's still a lot to experience in the game that my movie doesn't cover.

I hope so. I know the original Shadow of Mordor movie used to do really well until it got hit with a "limited ads" flag for whatever reason a few years ago, causing views to drop significantly since then.

@@mrhappeh6067 it means youtube thinks there's something that breaks some kind of community guidelines, so they won't show as many ads. But they didn't tell me what they thought it broke, and it also apparently affects the regular algorithm as well so people don't see it as much in recommendations or in search, so the views dropped a lot.

Hello! Can I ask how you add subtitles in every language for each of your videos? A few years ago, KZread stopped allowing viewers to add subtitles. Most of your videos have 30+ subtitles, how do you do it?

  • @AndyGilleand

    @AndyGilleand

    6 ай бұрын

I transcribe the subtitles in english, and then I use google translate for the rest, along with translations for the title and description of the video, so it shows up when people are searching in other languages too. I've found that people are more likely to make use of subtitle tracks in their own language, rather than telling youtube to auto translate the subtitles for them. Even though the translations would likely be the same or similar.

@@austinjones2048 Ahh - sorry. Now I understand exactly what you meant. You’re talking with regards personal preference, right? Same here. “Lord of the Rings” and “Dune” were the first books I remember reading as a young teenager that I’d consider my first forays into proper adult reading. But Purists aside, I love the movies. What Peter Jackson did with them and getting the studio to invest in not 1, not 2, but 3 movies back then was [back then] a really big risk. The fact he had an uncompromising vision in wanting to stay as faithful to the books as possible (although it’s impossible to directly translate any book to the big screen, so rewriting things as screenplays will always distill and merge things otherwise it just comes off as dry - if people want that, go see a Play). My friend’s Husband scored the music for the Amazon TV show. Sadly that’s the best thing about it! I found the show itself awful, and a real slog to drudge thru tbh. Considering it’s the most expensive TV series ever made (go check out the budget per episode, it’ll make your butt clench!) it’s nowhere near as entertaining as “The Wheel of Time” - which somewhat ironically is Produced and streaming on the same Network! Madness. (If you haven’t seen “Wheel of Time” yet, I do recommend it to you - especially if you found “Rings of Power” as dull like I did. I have to ask though: what did you think of The Hobbit trilogy of films? I’m intrigued to read your thoughts - I wanted to like them, but it all felt so different somehow and I just couldn’t connect with it in the way I had with the previous trilogy.

Just finished watching and you have done it AGAIN!!! That ending, though... I did NOT expect that! Also, those photo's during the second half of the credits, were those already in the game, or did you edit them in? Or both?

The montage originally played as a separate sequence in between the start and end of the credits. I edited it so it would play side by side with the credits. The director of Shadow of Mordor died during the production of this game, so they came up with this montage with a specially designed orc that looks like him to honor him.

Love your movies and hope you never stop making them (I know you enjoy Assassin's Creed and they seem to not be stopping any time soon with those, so at least a few more!) Would love to see you try out Red Dead Redemption. Only issue is that it is not on anything but PS3, Xbox 360, and now Switch (can't believe they ported it to Switch and not PC!). I don't know if that is a problem (or if you are just not fond of the material/game/setting), but the Undead Nightmare expac even technically fits in the game proper (sort of) and I personally think the story is worthy of your talents. RDR2, is not as great a story in my opinion, but it is on PC and more modern consoles. Either way, both are VERY cinematic games and if you were to attempt either, I am sure there are fans out there that would love to see your editing mastery at work on either one :) (I know I would!) Keep up the great work!

I do plan to do the Red Dead series now. Both games are actually available on modern consoles now, they just released RDR1 last month or so. I plan to do RDR2 first, to do it in chronological order, and then I will do 1. I wanted to wait until both games were available to play in 4K before I committed to this idea. Note that those things were patched out, although I played it at launch and never felt like I needed to buy a loot box or XP boost. That being said, the final act (which I basically skip over in the movie as there's no story in the gameplay) was still really grindy, even with the patch reducing the number of missions.
