Mid Norfolk Railway..... The Hidden Bit!!

The MNR long term ambition is to extend through to Fakenham, this video gives a rare look at the first stage between Dereham and Worthing Crossing just south of North Elmham where it is hoped to build a new station (the original like many on this line is in private ownership).
The line is some five miles long and restricted to 15mph as well as only 12 operating days per year at the moment (As Per ORR regs).
The Guard of this propelled single car DMU kindly allowed me to place my camera in cab to record the return journey to Dereham. It has been edited to eliminate conversation and radio chat as well as waiting time at crossing and as captioned is produced at double speed ........... Enjoy the ride!!

Now that was very interesting Brian...That new section is longer than many Railways in the UK, and to see it on one of the few opportunities when it's possible to do so is very special....Thanks for that...Regards....Bob.

That's true Bob, it's actually the same as the NNR but that one benefits from some nice sea views. It was a bonus on my first visit to the line though and to see what they hope to achieve. Regards, Brian.

Glad you enjoyed it Alan, sorry about those reflections though as camera was remote and I had no control over it..... It certainly is rural!! Regards, Brian.

Takes you back to a time when no one was in a rush, we all arrived on time to destination's, and watched time go by on our journey!

Quite true, the journey was to be enjoyed rather than simply a means to an end. Although, had I not 'doubled' actual speed I'm sure many viewers might have nodded off lol. Cheers, Brian.

Thank you Brian for a very nice video. It will be a good long journey when they finally reach Fakenham. I think a lot of people would be happy to be crossing keepers and open and shut the gates for the trains to pass. Just add a ground frame and signals to protect each crossing, like that at Garvestone. Something I wanted to do as a job after I left school many years ago. Unfortunately that never happened, but as I have a special interest in railways as a hobby, the interest developed into signalling and later to the technical side as well.

Many thanks David, glad you enjoyed the trip. Not a line I visit often but yes, it would be good if they could accomplish this extension...... And maybe you can then achieve that ambition. Cheers, Brian.

Nice ride, and nicely filmed and edited. It will be brilliant if the MNR could reach Fakenham, but the level crossing problem will have to be addressed at some stage, on this section and also on the stretch to Wymondham. Unfortunately, flat landscapes mean that there are lots of roads, now often with heavier traffic, so manually opened gates will be unsustainable, I think, and ungated crossings are pretty much taboo, as the RH&DR have found. Seeing how straight the line is, (though some would regard this as blasphemy!) I think that Pacers would be good for running a service as they would not have the flange squeal on curves and have excellent views through the windows.

Much appreciated Mervyn. It was my first visit to the MNR so that was a nice bonus trip. I hope they can progress & look forward to a further visit. Cheers, Brian.
