Mid-century modern rattan sideboard with secret child-safe latches - DIY Build
Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль
This media storage console/sideboard/buffet was the first of two pieces I designed and built for a client. The second piece is a matching record player cabinet which will have a separate build video uploaded in the coming weeks.
Built out of 18mm blackbutt veneered birch plywood (natural feature grade), this piece features hardwood edge banding, mitred corners, and rattan sliding doors with integrated spring-loaded child safe locks.
Before anyone asks, the new scar you'll see on my hand was not from woodworking - rather an accident with a pocket knife while camping (oops). Was still pretty fresh when I filmed this video... and just remember, always keep the blade pointed towards your friends.

Incredible work, Chris. It looks stunning and the child safety lock is a stroke of genius.

Dang, this video just made me fall in love with woodworking again. Also your video editing, colouring, and sound mixing is insane. It was so dreamy and completely drew me in for the entire video. Keep being great 👏🏻

Thank you, glad you liked it! Lot of time and effort goes into editing these down from 7-8h of raw footage 😮💨
Great work! Love the design

Thanks, appreciate it :)
Would have been cool to see how you covered the rattan at the back of the doors

Was going to run a strip of wood, or maybe glue some sash cord around it, but as it'll never be seen just left it as is
@11:30 thanks for the idea. Why didn't I think of that? 😅 Always had a bit of a hard time with taping my edge bands (cutting and applying tape as i hold the thin strip in place).

Hah yep I tried a few other ways and was just too fiddly... this works a treat! There are some clamps that rockler make (bandy clamps) that do a pretty good job too but the pre-tape method does the job nicely
Lovely piece and great editing. I find your videos very relaxing to watch, I hope that is the intention? I'm in the middle of building a Blackbutt veneered buffet myself, taken some ideas from your build.
