I worked on the C-5. On one occasion, I was en route to help repair one of our birds. In the troop compartment with us was a group of green berets going on a mission. We Bull shitted for a bit, but not too long because they were preparing for their mission. They thanked us for our service, and I reciprocated. They understood they needed us (transportation of goods and gear) as much as we needed them (they do the dirty work). Not all service members hate on other branches.

Can you answer some questions regarding the refuelling? If they have the auxiliary wing tanks do they get filled also? I imagine they have a pump system to get the fuel out of the tank, can the same wing tank accept fuel also?

​@@islandmick6349 Yes, there's a pump behind the refueling receptacle that directs fuel to both the internal and external fuel tanks. It's all plumbed together.

They should offer the pilots snacks and refreshing beverages as well since it's a mid air gas station don't u think?

I remember applying for a job at General Dynamics in Ft Worth, Texas in 1973 to work on this airplane's weapons system design. They called me after 3 years to come for an interview. I was training to be a helicopter pilot by then. Excellent aircraft 👍🇺🇸

Can you imagine being a tanker crewmember at the end of a long day, when out of the blue an Su-27 hooks up and the pilot bellows "*Tovarisch! Tonight, we remember good old M.A.D. days and drink vodka, da? Da!*"

The whole mid air refueling thing still amazes me

2:17 Do you see the alien's reflection on the boom? I love how the ground is drifting by at a leisurely pace like he's on a Sunday morning drive out in the country going all of 5 mph.

Respect (don't annoy) the guys that feed you, pay you and transport you ( or in this case give you gas) and you get just about any place without fuss in the military.

We usually get the scores of the football games and pass them to our receivers, helps ease the boredom of a 10 hour flight and multiple ARs

My goodness the F16 is such a gorgeous plane

The f-16 has to be the best fighter jet in the world!

AVGN's Top Gun episode brought me here. I decided I had to see this being done in real life to believe it.... I am equal parts amazed in human ingenuity and mystified in it's stupidity that we'd ever have to have a plane that needs to refuel mid-flight.

jrftworth Nearly all tankers and bombers have been retrofitted with the latest equipment. KC-1355 have lots of computers.

And that's the reason I wanna b a boom operator on the KC 135

Air refueling seems to be the nicest and non-toxic places in millitary aviation :D

This is the way a refueling should be done. The boom operator did his job without extraneous comments and these were skilled receiver pilots. To understand the physical exertion of a boom operator, lay on your stomach on a bed with your head over the edge. Now lay there for half an hour. Retired CMSgt and former instructor boom operator.

It probably is, because you can actually feel what the plane is doing, and the changes in air speed when manipulating the throttle. You get feedback. That's one thing you'll never get with a simulator, and thus it makes it tougher. Flying by the "seat of the pants" is definitely a real thing.
