I'm not a fan boy for any brand, but I do have to say that just like an m16 or m4 vs the AK 47...having owned all 3 and many knifes...there is a reason why the Ak is harder to jam and stop in most cases than the other...if your tolerances are to tight and there is no play, then you get gunked up and jammed up quicker

They’re my favorite OTFs because I love their aesthetics. I also love that they use Elmax and M390 instead of more everyday steels. I think they’re the top OTFs on the market just by an inch for that reason.

Nah looks is someone’s preference. I don’t like the look of the utx85 , and has all that shiny big hardware too showing .. LOVE the FDE phaeton and simplicity/classy look of it and therefore went with that instead. Just hope it proves to be reliable

MICROTECH does put out more blade configurations and variations with their otf’s. Single edge, double edge, tanto, etc. They also use different blade finishes like satin, stonewashed, mirrored, blackout. They offer two-tone with or without full serrations or semi serrations on their blades. Imho the best serrations on the market. Microtech uses a variety a different colors for their aluminum handles and step it up for special editions to carbon fiber and customized anodized fittings/hardware. They also use more exotic steels and Damascus on their oft’s and give the user more options. None of the competitors offer such variety. Not to mention the various blade grinds and angles that are second to none. The detail on microtech otf blades are by far superior to all other production otf knives on the market to date.

I wish the Phaeton’s blade was as broad as the Microtech’s blade. The Phaeton’s blade looks a little too disproportionately slim/skinny compared to its handle.

  • @NikeaTiber
    @NikeaTiber5 жыл бұрын

Microtech is the "gold standard" of otf knives, probably because they popularized them, so every other otf gets compared to them. A few manufacturers are on par or better, some are worse, and everything gets more complicated when you throw pricing into the mix. I was looking at the phaeton, but for me it came down to the ultratech being available in m390, and also having wider blade stock. I also dislike the proprietary screws, they don't serve any useful purpose, especially if loctite was neglected during assembly. In the end, a well made knife is a well made knife, no matter what brand is on it.

That's a great look at these knives. The only autos I've had before the UTX-85 were the Protech The Don, a couple small Protechs, and a Kershaw Launch. The Kershaw was as good IMO as the small Protechs, but the Protech Don wasn't working out due to the little "scabbard" things catching in my pocket. I like the look and design and quality of the Microtech, but the deployment is ridiculously stiff. If it gets easier to open and close that could make it a keeper, otherwise I dunno.

Fit and finish the houge, benchmade and microtech are fairly similar. However where I personally feel that microtech is ahead of competition is in the choice of steel used in their blades, as well as the large amount of options available for each design. Simply steel superiority and variety in each model are what make them better for me.

The main reason I prefer microtech to the infidel is the microtech has a stronger lock in my experience and my infidel seemed to be more sensitive to getting too dirty to properly operate. I work in a sawmill though, it's not common for a knife to be exposed to the amount of dust, hydraulic oil and frigid temperatures they see in my pocket. I also beat on my work knives pretty bad. The microtech holds up really well to moderate use.

I agree, micro techs ARE generally overrated and over priced. However, that switch jiggle is merely due to design. There is a tiny spring underneath the switch that keeps it suspended. The benefit of this design is that it keeps dirt from your thumb from getting into the mechanism during actuation. You’ll notice there are no open slots under the trigger like there are in the Benchmades. Just FYI nice vid

Might be just the right size to get in there and keep things snug although they probably won't be any good for torquing them down but sometimes it better then nothing... or you can always find some finishing nails cut them flat and mount them in something solid or soldered, braised, welded, tracked, glued, or what ever you think will hold strong enough for the job at hand? But I’ve had a few axis locks fail on me and some terrible symmetry with blade grind lines on benchmades and if you ask me that’s out of line for what they charge. As far as micro tech, the only one I own and have ever handled is my utx 70. It’s tiny and I love it. I’ve seen some videos of people just beating the hell out of those utx 85s and while I don’t think that makes any sense, it is nice to know it will hold up to a degree of usage. Some guys have carried a micro tech otf for years without failure. Great video btw, I agree with you. I wish they would release a batch now and then with less expensive steel. Say 154 cm for example. I’d gladly pay 100 bucks for a 154 cm micro tech knife. But they probably wouldn’t even drop in price even if they did use a lesser steel.

I think they are both quality knives. My experience has been that my utx-85’s deploy just a little easier than my infidel and mini infidel, however, they all are easy to deploy in my opinion.

Honestly, I concur. Both companies make great knives, however most Microtech's OTF's are too stiff. I tried opening the Cypher with one hand to no avail, I had to use both hands. Great point about the traction. Most knives I will not buy if it's too smooth to hold onto with very few exceptions. Benchmade service and warranty is flawless. They care about doing the right thing for the consumer and honoring that committment. I don't know if Microtech can match that. Lastly, with Microtech, you're paying for the name. Benchmade has my vote.

Thank you! I bought my wife a MT utx-70... paid $220ish for it. My observations: 1) The edge was DULL 2) The Bohler M390 steel was extremely soft. As soon as I got one side sharpened, I’d flip it over and the bevel on the other side was gone. 3) Stiff action... too stiff 4)There was blade play right out of the box. This knife is not worth the money IMO and I’m thinking about sending it back. That’s something I never do, but I’m that unhappy with it. For the money, I was expecting a lot more than a fancy box, and a subpar knife. Should’ve bought her a Hogue.

just got me a marfione cypher od green today, and the sound at 3:28, when in my hand, it felt definite and with purpose. Then it hit me, this knife has a theatrical aspect to it. I could see me 'playing this knife' like an instrument with its loosened part in a scenario where I want to raise the tension, or create subtle awareness that 'hey, I've got a knife in my hand' or 'is he holding a knife, what is that sound?' or ... basically, the modern version of the good 'ol ('bad boy') switchblade/butterfly of the 80s

First off, I love the objective thinking. As a Microtech fanboy (a proud one, at that) I could never jump out and say that they’re “better” than any other company out there, although they’re my favorite. I know, it all comes down to preference and so many of us get caught up in trying to justify our purchases, but to say any one brand is the one to rule them all is a stretch. Now that I’ve added a whole lot of nothing to your comments, I have to go pick up a utx 85...

I once owned an Infidel. When I got it, I was so excited. I tested it by stabbing it into 3" corrugated cardboard. The blade was pshed halfway into the handle and jammed stuck. I could not get it to work after that. I sent it back and got my money back. I am leary of ever buying another infidel again. I like the sytyle of the Infidel but don't think I would rely on it for anything.

You just have to pull the trigger. OTF Knives are (in a sense) like children. People will wait untill they are further along in life (financially ready) than they should have, to have one. Then once they do they all say they should have done it sooner. Just do it and bam! One month of maximum frugality later you are back in the black. And now have an awesome 😎 baby 🍼 that you are super nervous to let folks hold 😉.

You know, it’s the perception that Microtech is a better knife maker. They’ve done a better name brand marketing campaign. Much like Harley Davidson motorcycle company. Honda is way better product, but they didn’t do a good job selling the name in their bike market. Good video. I am in the market to get a Ultatech and I think you just changed my mind. I have to justify $300 on a Ulteatech. Thanks for the post. 👍
