    Thank you so much for all your clarifications. You answered all my questions about what I should do : buy or not Microsoft Office. And you're right. Why should I pay for something that is compatible with Microsoft Office, free and equivalent ? I made up my decision : it's gonna be Open Office !

    That's fantastic! I just aim to educate, not make decisions. Office has it's place for sure, but I'm always going the route of "free, and it works" first! Thanks so much for commenting and supporting my channel. LMK how you like the software after you've used it for a while:)

    Actually it has differences in Excel Spreadsheet. I formatted two lines in a single cell by [Alt + Enter] in MS Excel, when I open with Open Office Spreadsheet, it does not support this function, and show doubles in this cell. I saw open office writer has more beautiful fonts.

    Thanks for this comment. I wasn't aware of this. Considering there are thousands of spreadsheet functions, I only focus on the most basic, as I'm trying to explain to people that they don't need to buy software for *basic* functions. But for more intermediate users, this could be helpful information. Thank you!

    Any chance you can compare Open Office with Libre Office? Another question I have is what is the functional difference between Mircosoft Office and Open Office, such as buttons, functions, operations, keystrokes, menus, options, and capacities. Thanks again!

  • @AskYourComputerGuy

    @AskYourComputerGuy

    Great suggestion, I'll work on that! Functionally, no difference. That's why I prefer Apache. The primary difference between them is Outlooks for email. Apache doesn't include an email client. As far as functions, customization of documents, etc, it's nearly identical. And certainly worth a look before spending $ just to have the Microsoft version. This is just my opinion, some people don't care for it. But it's what I use exclusively to run multiple businesses

    I think LibreOffice also supports the newer XML file formats that Open Office does not (.DOC vs .DOCX). I don't see where Open Office allows you to save in that newer format.

    I believe you are correct. You can open .docx but not save to it (yet). I've just never been a fan of Libre because of the ads when I first installed it. That's when I started using Open Office. But if you absolutely had to use a docx, you can always open it and edit it free on Office.com

    Here is a testimonial to the merits of Apache Open Office 4.0: Whoever designed Apache Open Office 4.0 should be kicked in the groin repeatedly, for creating such a user unfriendly office program that locks documents, rearranges transferred files, makes it difficult to manipulate photos, frequently crashes, etc. It is an absolute nightmare to work with, a time waster of an unsurpassed magnitude. Whoever you are, you best hope we do not cross paths, for if we do, I will kick your illogical, irrational, unreasonable, unjustifiable and dis-functional designer ass. IMBECILE !

My institution (Cuyahoga Community College) provides Microsoft Office 365 to students for free for educational use. All they have to do is download it and install it on their computers. It will handle any doc, xls or ppt with ease. When you start getting into docx, xlsx, or pptx, sometimes you run into issues, because it doesn't always translate macros correctly. But for 99.3% of people, and students, it works exceptionally well. I've used it to open and edit some pretty intense spreadsheets, with lots of worksheet migration and transfer from one to the other, and it works flawlessly for me

    I only use Office because I don't want to take the risk of macro issues when transferring files. I write novels and I need to use what editors use and that's Word. Otherwise, I don't think most people in the world need Word and I wish people would use OpenOffice or LibreOffice which are great.

    @@AskYourComputerGuy I just can't take the risk and editors are very pesky characters when it comes to any flaw in a document. They are also Luddites, afraid to learn anything new. The funny part of it is that LibreOffice and OpenOffice barely have any learning curve. In a lot of ways I find them easier to use than clunky Word. But that's just the way it is. On the same token I think Word has improved. One thing I like is that Word now has Dark Mode. As I'm an Office Insider I get to test these features out months before they roll them out for the general public. But there are still improvements I'd like to see. For instance, when it comes to searching from a Word Doc it defaults to Bing. I would rather have the option to use Google, which is still the king of search. But Open and LibreOffice still don't have this feature at all. Google Docs has it, which of course uses Google, but there are too many downsides to Google Docs. Here's another thing. It's a total pain in the neck to try to use a cloud service with Libre and OpenOffice. It's simply not integrated and automatic. I cannot take the risk of losing my work. But I also have to call out Microsoft for the lagging speed of OneDrive. It just crawls along like a stoned turtle.

    I can't argue any of those points! I think MS kinda made everyone dependent on Office with the docx and xlsx extensions. Thankfully other programs have followed suit. And for what you need, as important as it is that your editors get it "right" I don't fault you at all for using Office...even if you're doing it while grumbling under your breath LOL - thx for the entertaining comment 😁

    Agreed. But some people insist on paying for Office and may not be advanced enough to deal with widgets or extensions. I wanted to make a comparison video so people could see that they didn't have to purchase software like they may have been conditioned to do :)

    OpenOffice crashes a ton. I only use it because it's free. It's a crash that occurs when I try to save. Then i end up losing all my work. Microsoft Word/excel should be baked into Windows PCs like other common features like the calculator or windows media player

    Okay, have to confess my HP computer is a newer model that is also a POS. Open Office is worthless, even if free. I use it simply for document writing, and it's fickle, reformatting apparently at will, not accepting revisions, doing weird stuff for no apparent reason. Whether it's my PC or the software, even free software is more than it's worth!
