LibreOffice vs. Microsoft Office: Battle of the Office Suites

Ғылым және технология

In this video, I find which office suite is better LibreOffice or Microsoft Office.
Each suite has its strengths and weakness.
I explore five different criteria to see who reigns supreme.
Microsoft has been the industry leader for a long period of time. It took over the spot from Word Perfect. Other suites like only office, open office, and a myriad of others have come to try to take that spot.
LibreOffice is an open source software that rivals any paid or free office suite on the market today. LibreOffice has been the leader in the open source office suite world for years.

Most reviews are pretty biased, whether in favor of LibreOffice or MS Office. At last, a review that is uncompromisingly honest. As a LibreOffice user exclusively, I may not necessarily agree with everything you say, but there is room for different opinions. You are honest and forthright and that deserves praise.

Is LibreOffice similar enough that I could learn it extremely well at home (I've head it for years without using it much since I prefer markdown) and then use what I learned in Microsoft Office/365 at work? I need to learn Microsoft Office/365 to get paid more.

Libre office has a setting that makes the interface tabbed just like in Microsoft Office. Might have been worth mentioning. Also one note is actually very good. Speaking of interface appearance, for some reason, LibreOffice (7.0) on my Windows 8 looks a bit rough and ouright ugly when I try to apply a consistent dark theme and the tabs interface, but on my Linux Mint, it (6.1) looks much more polished and automatically adapts to the OS's dark mode in a satisfying way. Also, the tabs look actually great (and the default appearance too). I have no idea why this differs that much, however.

As others have mentioned - the user interface of LO cam be tabbed like word, but it does still not look as sharp as word. Maybde because its designed like its sorta 3D someplaces, where word is more flat. OneNote is, as of now, irreplaceable. Nothing has the capabilities it has today, that is free and/or open source. Im in college and get the ms suite for free, so i use it in education related matters, just to avoid any compatability errors, but on the private side, I use LO and Linux and all that. Havent seen you video on only office, but it is worth noting, that the limitations that exist in only office on windows does not exist on the linux version. One side worth noting in my opinion is the matter of privacy (which will of course be of varying importance dependingon who you are and what you do), and that would be another point to LO. Good video!!

Mr Reddix, decent comparison and very fair. While I know there's a LibreOffice for Windows, the reason I will be _forced_ to use that software on Linux is because I am dumping Windows 11. It's a bloated, festering pile of afterbirth posing as an OS when it is really Spyware. Usual drill: been doing Microsoft since I came out of the CP/M days and loved Windows 7. But, having W11 forced on me was too much. The costant weekly updates was too much Big Brother for me - especially since all my defaults were reset. LibreOffice is a bit on the rough edge but there is some beauty in there and I will appreciate is as I use the product more. That is also the way with Linux! Chip in and support? You betcha!

I think the comments on LibreOffice's design are fair - for the default layout. But it has a couple layouts that are a lot closer to Office's, and all-around better IMO. For sure they're better for people coming from Word. I think it's not the default layout because some of the userbase would resent imitating Office, but either way the "tips" LibreOffice displays on launch draw attention to it, so it's within the reach of the average user.

Whenever you save the document, under file name make sure the save as type is word 97-2003 or 2007-365. You'll get a warning about some of the content and formatting not able to be saved. As long as you stick with fonts and formatting that Word recognizes you should be fine. @@AdrianReddix I don't know how much spreadsheet you use but there is no way to sorting "data column" in pivot table. Only solution is to copy paste the pivot table in new sheet and then sort it. But I have data with 300+ columns that is generated by excel with sub total and totals. And libreoffice calc can't do it. I'd be pretty happy if they added that feature but until now they've been ignoring this issue for 7+ years, so I don't have hope.

They do. A couple of the ones that stand out are rehearsing PowerPoint presentations with a digital coach and greater control for IT departments to name a few. Are those differences worth the cost? In some cases, yes. You just have to know what you need and which program gives it to you.

Lol libre office winning only due to cost Libre office sheets doesn't even have the option to create tables, it has named ranges sure but the columns have no name or identification to use in formulas just the specific cell , Excel is the absolute best and no other office alternative offers the same features, writer apps and presentation are really easy to replace to be honest Libre office feels like MS Office 2003, in Linux I prefer using Only Office but all the big stuff specially sheet related stuff I do in Excel on Windows Office suite is probably the weakest point on Linux

When it comes to LibreOffice Calc's database ranges, by it not being dynamic it's not as good when it comes to the same function as MS Office Excel Tables. I'm not quite sure what you mean by saying it feels like MS Office 2003. Do you mean the look or functionality? I think OnlyOffice is a fantastic office suite also. I am a strong supporter of open-source and I'll usually pick open-source first if it can perform the job I need it to. It does seem that Excel works better for you and that's good.
