Interesting thought. I can understand their point of view if Microsoft wanted to have the right to recover their work and anything that's been added to it. If I was a manager, I wouldn't put my team's work under that risk if the result we were working towards risked being taken away for someone else to take all the credit and glory for it.

@@Doofer911 what makes me even more mad is that the blaming the customers for hyping the sim up, and like have you seen the graphics!? that's how business works they get hyped they get sales and that's how third-party developers make new aircraft because there are a lot of people buying their simulator PMDG is a bit too negative on this, that's how Windows phone failed it didn't get hyped up people didn't buy it and third-party developers didn't make apps for it. I think it's absurd for PMDG to blames the same people who make their business possible by buying their aircraft

Well PMDG is a bit special in that regard since most of their business model is based around MS ESP. So they really have a vested interest in a ESP platform being successful which is why they wanted to buy rights to the platform in the first place. They shied away from X-Plane up to this date really and I don't see them making it any different in MSFS. What I would take note on is that quite probably MS already started working on this new Sim when selling to Dovetail or at least around that time. The tech they showed off does not grow on trees. They needed to put at least some time and effort into making this. Which brings me to a wild guess namely that Dovetail knew about MSFS and the bad start and PR meant they didn't want to compete with MS. What I find quite peculiar is the fact that both PMDG and Orbx (well who needs Orbx in the new game?) are drawing comparisons to MS Flight all to quickly. One could argue it is the same company but that is more of a stretch than saying it will be the continuation of the MSFS IP since well it is called Microsoft Flight Simulator. The only real message in here is really that nobody knew and that MS is hopefully bringing Add-On support.

Flight Simulation is a hobby which attracts an older demographic who grew up idolising aircraft such as the DC6--6, much like us younger generations who idolise the more modern 747 and A380. Plus it's an aircraft which has "old technology" such as radial piston engines which appeal to people. And I've been in close proximity to that type of engine and flown in an aircraft with one.... it's an incredible sound just listening to one live!

Funny how the "sim scene" is freaked out all of a sudden. Microsoft has every right to produce a new Microsoft Flight Simulator, it doesn't need to have anything in common with previous games, and they have the right to sell it and make add-on content for it, partnering with anyone who they want. I very much doubt the new game will be primarily for these "simmers", I think they will continue to be happy with FSX. The new Flight Simulator will probably target more mainstream gamers across Windows 10 and Xbox. I don't know what they are worried about. Microsoft revoking their right to produce add-ons for previous Flight Simulator games?

It's difficult to say. My understanding is that Dovetail Games purchased rights to release a modified version of Microsoft Flight Simulator X. So they had rights over that particular piece of software. Lockheed Martin as I understand it, purchased the whole Microsoft ESP Engine which is what FSX was built within. So I could be wrong but Lockheed Martin own the Microsoft ESP "tool". Dovetail Games own(owned) FSX which was a product of that "tool".

I got a similar survey after the FSX team disbanded - but before "Flight" came out. The whole survey was mostly about my opinion on a more mission-based, goal oriented , "game-like" experience. As a long-time simmer, I said that would be fine as an _addition_ to the core simulator but shouldn't be the main focus. Clearly, they didn't listen to anything I had to say. The whole thing was aimed at Gamers. Maybe there will be a balance in the new sim. I have no problem with the simulator having an easy game-mode for casual players, don't strip out the things that allow us to have a realistic experience - and keep the platform open for 3rd parties.

The actual Simm won't contain scenery from inside it...it will be streamed to you. Hence there's not really any piont to Orbx being involved for e.g...maybe the odd airport but not actual scenery. I suspect Aerosoft is indeed involved in this. We have to remember that Aerosoft has been very much involved in FSX in general. That is where their turnover has come from. I am convinced that Aerosoft has taken a hit from the fact that FSX has gotten an old simulator and also from Microsoft's previous decision to end future development work for the Flight Simulator. X-Plane 11 has not been a similar kind of a golden egg for Aerosoft as FSX because X-Plane gets much more content from the community itself. If some 3rd party company needs FS2020 - it will be Aerosoft.

Although indeed Aerosoft does not make NEO, I have seen various youtube videos commenting that the fonts used in the cockpit are EXTREMELY similar to the fonts used in Aerosoft's A320, which seem to be very distinct from fonts used in other simulations of A320 by other companies. Ths youtubers did not even mention the AS- registration. So it seems like a totally separated analysis, not coming from AS registration on the planes, that points to Aerodoft as well.

Just a couple of points. The rumours that MS took over the FSW code, thus ended Dovetails involvement in FSW don't add up, Orbx said they had absolutely no idea about this new MSFS announcement, don't you think that Aimee who now works for Orbx, who used to work for Dovetail as the publicist on FSW would have known, surely she would have at least told John Venema in private, he just wouldn't have commented in the way that he did on his forum. Also the aircraft code could just as easily "AS-MGS12" Aces Studios - Microsoft Gaming Studios?

I don't know, I could be completely wrong. Aimee might have been aware of the reasons for FSW being cancelled, she might not have. As for Aces Studios, it could be a homage to the old flight sim development team however I don't think that Aces Studios exists or has been reformed in recent times.

Looking at the trailer I think it's a fair bet that your opinion on why FSW was cancelled is correct. The clouds in the trailer look similar to Tru sky (sp?) that FSW were looking to introduce and, IIRC, FSW also had mobile ground staff and MS Flight had mobile wild animals in its missions. I fear the new sim will have a similar business model to MS Flight but I hope I'm wrong. Having converted to X-Plane I will not be rushing out to purchase MSFS unless there's a huge discount for early adopters.

Ther is still a place for bot PMDG and ORBX with a new sim from MS. One big thing that I have bin thinking of is could this be the results of "NGFS"? New Generation Flight Simulator. Made with Unity engine? If you look in the fs video ter are very little high altitude flight, and the horizon is looking much like NGFS, not very sharp? In that case we can definitely expect good fps!

Excellent analysis, thanks for helping to sort it all out! Whatever happens with the new Microsoft Flight Simulator I’m sure it will be visually stunning regardless of our favorite 3rd party devs involvement - namely Orbx. I’m wondering if it will be geared more towards “gaming” with story oriented scenarios and less on simming. I just can’t imagine Microsoft abandoning the devoted fans of their great sim by not having this reboot be in every way as good a simulation as FSX. We’ll have to wait and see but regardless, I have FSX on my PC and it’s a beautiful experience. I have to say though that to see an even more impressive Microsoft Flight Simulator on the upcoming new Xbox machine, or the existing Xbox One for that matter is exciting! I only hope the graphics are as impressive as Orbx and I would hope Orbx will be working with Microsoft on this project. Just my two bits.

Microsoft is not dovetail. They have the resources to make a software better than anyone else, especially when it comes to something like this. They have been very smart in recognizing the aging ESP and made profit out of it by selling it to dovetail in fact a brilliant business move. I believe it's a great thing that none of these guys were informed which is probably a statement in itself stating whatever development happens for the msfs 2020 has to go through Microsoft, as a consumer I'm absolutely delighted. Now if this happens we wont have to worry about quality issues since there will a standard which these guys have to meet before its released as an added content. Obviously they will be worried since now the window of making excuses for shabby performance and quality seems to close down once and for all. A perfect example is DCS. Anyway I believe the core software belongs to Microsoft and I support them completely at the same time I'm extremely thankful that they are keeping the flight sim development active and modern.

I am happy that its time to shake up these developers, I have spent hundreds of dollars on Orbx products, they enhance the Sim, but they are abysmal in FPS, example I bought England True Earth, I had to remove it because it slowed down so much the Sim. The Dovetail explanation makes sense, since the Dovetail staff were adament in defending themselves, explaining that the community didn't know what was happening behind the scenes. People wrote that off as a bullshit defense, but surely, if MS did reclaim their development, Dovetail would be legally bound to not disclose the facts. I feel like the fact that PMDG wasn't approached to develop for this Sim means that it isn't going to be a stand-alone platform, but more of an App or arcade-style Sim. And, since it's using Azure for the scenery, it makes sense Orbx would be left out. It's interesting, but I'll stick with X-Plane and see what happens.

I have no idea how you are getting any of that. An app? It's a full simulator. That's 100% confirmed via interviews. It covers the whole world. There is AI. There is ATC. A weather engine is confirmed. There's flight planning. Other hints that it's not an arcade game are the redone GPS systems shown and the sloped runways. You don't spend valuable development time on all that just to put out an app where you fly through hoops. Perhaps the biggest clue is the name though. It's being called Flight Simulator, which is a very protected property by MS given it's history to their company. They aren't going to use that name for an arcade cash grab. People are reading way too much into PMDG's comments. Of course MS hasn't approached them yet. Whether Microsoft will work with PMDG remains to be seen. I also think this F2020 would be a bit pricey, maybe around $150. But simmers would buy it because of unbelievable graphics. I just hope that Microsoft would be open to third party addons. This new M2020 is definitely a threat to ORBX. Will you still need ORBX scenery on 2020? They know there was a market when they saw the hype around Flight School / FSW / P3D and they certainly understand at the very least it's about marketing as a simulator over a game. That was obvious by the trailer as it showed off more than just eye candy in the minor details. The marketing for it is a Simulator once again and PC first. I think MS threw the licence to DTG because they wanted someone else to figure out how not to go to market with a new sim. DTG did the right things in getting top quality default scenery and aircraft, and the wrong things in not having a big enough hanger, not having any real ATC, and going too big into social media. MS learned a lot from DTG scewing it up. Microsoft looks like they are bringing to market what DTG wanted FSW to become.

Carenado is trash, stop puffing them up. They have planes that have been out for years ie the 350i. There are loads of complaints about it on their forum and they have came out and said they will not fix it. My only choice is to PAY someone to fix it. As much as I love the King Air 350i I refuse to spend MORE money just to fix the landing lights.

Hallo Doofer, yes very exciting news and about time we got a new iteration of MSFS :) But personally I don't think any of the 3rd Party devs are involved in this at all...to be honest, in my opinion the whole flight-simming dev community is rather immature and unprofessional, lots of bigheads on ego trips and such. MS have the experience and the money to do quite well without them I think.

Of the companies that have made statements, it does seem that the announcement of MSFS has been a bit of a shock to many. But I agree, especially PMDG's comments regarding people within the flight sim community was really unnecessary. I can understand their position and their concerns but publicly calling people within the flight sim community a "herd" then trying to take the moral high ground by saying "As a consumer I am not so easily led by the nose as many simmers like to be..." leaves a very bad impression..... very bad!

They will have to allow 3rd party addons for this sim to survive. I’m sure the vanilla sim will have Imperfections(like all the previous MFSs) . From some of the trailer shots the airports look bland .. the flight dynamics may need tuning who knows . 3rd party addons are really the heart of flight sims that pump new life into the sims and make them age very well

I will lay odds on that this will turn out to be a pay as you go application. using Microsoft cloud computing power to generate mind stunning graphics, and , if microsoft follow their FSX etc pattern a weak physics engine. They see flight simulation as a game - if they can monetize it - not as a serious flight experience which I would suggest is where the likes of X plane 11 are at.

As a long time loyal MS flightsim user, I became dissenchanted with them when pulled out, but perceveered with Lockheed Martins contribution, which was OK, then I tried X-Plane, this was a night and day difference for me, no going back. Then came Osker Pilote's Ortho4XP scenery, free, make it yourself, and your flying over real terrain, I don't even bother with autogen any more. I doubt anything MS produce will better X-Plane with ortho. MS seem to be destroying everything they touch, Skype is an example, it's useless for text these days. Their office package gets crapier with every release. Windows 10 is terrible. they are always chasing, never leading now MS seem to think we are cattle who should be forced fed their OS simply because they say so. Finally putting a clause in they could pull back the rights with other people's work show what a shower they are. Remember Windows, 311 and explore had chunks of other people's code, so that's not new either. If you haven't tried X-Plane with ortho, have a look at some of the video on KZread, install it for a trial, you don't know what your missing. Great vids Doofer, impressive tutorials.

I don't find any of the PMDG statement as derogotary toward gamers. It's an accurate description of our consumer culture which seen in every aspect of tech media whether from hardware to software. Consumers want to believe the lie (aka: the hype). We want to believe in overpromises and E3 game-graphics demos. We want more; We want it now; We get excited and *WE GET BURNED.* _Then we do it all over again_

They can make it look as beautiful as anything but that doesn’t make a Flight Simulator. X-plane has provided a pretty good flight model, and it took many years - thanks to Austin and his energetic love for flying. No one has put as half as much Flight technology into a Simulator as Austin and the team at Laminar Research.

  • @EdwardRLyons

    @EdwardRLyons

Exactly. No matter how good the new MSFS looks, what will make or break it for me is the quality of the flight modelling - the aerodynamics, engine dynamics, atmospheric modelling, etc. If it's not at least as good as X-Plane 11, the eye candy simply will not cut it. And I'm skeptical since it's being driven as an XBox product.

MS development and marketing of products is cyclical. All products have a beginning, middle and an end and when sales fall of, MS drops support. Business is business. Part of the money grab is to kill off the competition and make true believers out of those who use competitors products. I will not migrate to MSFS 2020 from FSX/SE or X-Plane for quite awhile. Competition is good for everyone and I truly like free-ware add-ons. Will it be out on Xbox first? Microsoft is the 800 pound gorilla in the play room.

@AviatorAV8R Well, I hope you're right and I'm dead wrong. The graphics did look good, but as usual, the deal is if you aren't running a superfast machine, you're likely not going to see that level of detail and performance. I just invested a good deal of money in XPlane11, new PC and monitor last year, controllers which, in the case of the Thrustmaster set I got, the stick already kind of died, I think. I don't have unlimited funds for the hobby. If I did, I would just buy Prepar3D, AeroFly, and this one and see which one I like best. I like XPlane11 just fine, I just wish I had a $8000 PC so as to run photoreal scenery and have it not crash on me etc. I got a Dell Inspiron 15 7000 a year ago, and it's a good machine but not the best. I'll never listen to anybody at MicroCenter again. I should've just gone for something a few levels above. It's an ok PC but not as fast as I first thought. Can't trust anybody anymore. Anyway, FSX I liked and it got me started, so I have high hopes for the new sim., but we'll see. If it really is that much better than XPlane I'll convert, as long as it's even worth it. Not spending $10000 on a new PC and gear just to run it.
