Don’t understand how to read the noise floor chart, but thanks. Been using the sm7b for about 3 years and love it. But saw the re320 on a YT video and thought it looked awesome. Plus it had a little brighter sound. The sm7b brings a lot of bass to my voice. Sometimes too much

Hey, can you explain why do you prefer condenser microphones over dynamic ones in VO?

I got an NT2-A for free from a collage of mine that has a son that is a rather famous artist in my country he dropped his mic on the floor and the mesh came loose, so I could have it for free since he bought a new one he said, And none of my friends hear a difference despite my old mic cost 8 USD and this is like, way more. I hear the little difference tough and I am happy with it :)

Unless you compensated, wouldn't the dynamic mic noise be lower simply because it is less sensitive? Someone pointed out that ambient noise in your room will be much higher than the mic self noise. also, on your Apex 435 vs AT4040 I found the Apex has the typical high end boost of cheap condensers, so somewhat irritating compared to the AT4040. I have the Apex 435 and the AT4040, the AT4040 is not my favorite mic, but I will take it over the Apex in a lot of cases. Having said that, you are right, mine cost $25 and is a great bargain.

Just bought my SM7B, yay! but your RE320 sounds pristine and amazing to work with. The RE320 Does/does not? have a Shock Mount built in as the SM7B and that was a big factor I took into consideration. Also SM7B with its Off-Axis rejection and the NF. Good mics give good results and make listeners happy, plus are less work in post-production. Rode actually took it to the next level with their 10 Year Warranty and convinced me good to purchase quite a few from them. I am starting a cooking show and my collection is finally done with, 2x Rode NTG3 1x Rode NT4 (ambient sounds) 1x Rode link Wireless(easy connection though plastic, not as durable as Sennheiser) 1 Shure SM7B/PSA1 for post-production round-up Camera's are 3x GH5 with XLR1 Preamps Sound is half the enjoyment of any good film and needs not to skimp about or take less seriously. *Thank you* for your great comparison, really thoughtful and well made. Enjoyed it :-)

Cuisined thank you! And yes...Rode has my business for life now! As for the SM7 vs RE320...it is true...to be honest I want an SM7 now... But price wise...I am still working on the wife to convince her I need one

I have watched reviews of at least 100 condenser microphones. Every mic has its own draw backs. Only U87ai, Mojave MA 201, Mojave MA D (dynamic), Slate digital M-1, NT1, Townsend sphere 22, STC 20, IMPERATIVE AUDIO LUCENT, AT 4040 are on my top list. I don't know which mic to pick. Can anyone help me.

You seem to be confusing the terms "noise floor" (which includes environmental noise and depends, in large part, on the type and sensitivity of your microphone) and "self-noise" (which is the noise introduced by your mic, even in a completely silent room.) The NT2-A is actually a VERY quiet mic when it comes to self-noise... the "noise" you are hearing is nearly all environmental, not self-noise. In 40 years of engineering and production in music, broadcasting, and voiceover, I have used the SM7b, RE20/27, Neumann U-87, Sennheiser 421/441, RCA 44/77 and many other mics, dynamic, condenser and ribbon. The primary reason the SM7b (along with other dynamic broadcast mics) is enjoying a resurgence is it's tendency to reject any noise more than a few feet away from the capsule, making it ideal for the untreated rooms that many artists are using at home now that COVID has prevented them from gathering in a studio.

@@DarkCornerStudios No worries.... for the record, I think your producer is wrong... the Shure sounds a little too hyped in the low end for your voice. You could use the roll-off, but actually, I thought the much cheaper RE320 sounded most natural on your voice. The 320 is not quite as "condenser-like" as the RE27N/D, but it does share the same capsule and is much more present and detailed than the ultra-smooth RE20. As weird as it sounds, some voices actually sound better on the 320 with the kick curve engaged.

@@garystackhouse5787 Yeah, I tried it and instantly disliked it...but if it works...run with it! I dont mind the sm7b on me now...I have learned how to EQ it for my voice...so it is now in rotation.

I think the nt2a and at4040 sounded best..🙂🙂

hmmm, is the re320 more versatile than the sm7b? im looking into either one for singing and acoustic guitar.

A lot of people think that... Very much a preference thing...neither is a bad choice

Listening on GOOD headphones, the AT4040 has a nice full quality, made the apex sound nasty in comparison, not even close. NT2 more low end, nice for VO, probably not so much for a pop vocal. RE320 a little more sensitive to plosives than the SM7b and has scooped low mids, less body, SM7b has a smoother top end. SM7b does have low output though, you will need a decent pre-amp.

Ha Ha. I liked the Apex 435 the best. When I fast forward (jump) this video between all the mics, the Apex 435 sounds best to me.

Can i ask what board? I have 2i4 gen2 and fethead and results suck for me, do you know the rms level u record at i try to get around -14 but hear hiss at even -24

That might be a problem with the mic or something in your chain to be honest...try swapping stuff out. I use a Presonus Ar8

I understand why SM7b's are used for voice-over. On this guy's voice, it emphasizes the mids & higher mids, so speech intelligibility is thru the roof. Would be good for radio, too, I bet - so dialog cuts thru in noisy listening scenarios. It's a very familiar sound; but to my ears, not _the_ most pleasant one... For his voice it's _boxy_ to me, at frequencies that are a little below what we hear as 'nasal'. How _ever:_ The dynamics have this 'radio' thickness in the _lower_ mids that is distinctly lacking in the NT2-A (and in most condensers). Our ears are pretty addicted that _heft,_ on unaccompanied voice.

Let me tell you my story :) I recently bought a Rode NT1 to replace my old, basic Apex 435. You know what? I like better the Apex! I find the Rode much more muddy, not as well balanced as the Apex. Not mentioning the Rode cost me 3 times more! Long story short, I will give back the Rode to the store and keep recording my stuff with the Apex :D

Its a good mic. Now that said...with some tweaking and EQing on the rode, you will notice a lot more clarity and depth to the mic... But the 435 is a great mic...especially at the price

@@DarkCornerStudios Honestly, I have no idea... You mean there's a way to change somehow the settings of the Rode..? Or you mean just EQing after recording, from the DAW? But would this make much sense? I mean, is it worth it to get a more expensive mic when I have to fix the EQ afterwards?

@@antoniosedda7298 depends on what you are doing. Singing? Instrumentation? YES Podcasting? No. The nuances of a nicer mic will come through if you are looking for crystal clear tones.

@@antoniosedda7298 It will give you better performance. Learn how to EQ it...it will make all the difference in the world. Trust me... Give it a couple months working with the Rode...and try the 435 again... You will hear it then.

Ex-RE320 user here. IMO that mic is EXTREMELY muddy. Zero top end detail, no sparkle, tons of boomy PVC-like low end information. B) Versatile? Hell no. It might be OK for kick drum and that's it. It's a TERRIBLE choice for vocals.

The SM7 sounded far worse than everything else, even the RE-20. Why do people use these things?

Because it works incredibly well with heavy processing in rougher environments on a lot of different voices. Hence why it's (next to the RE20) the most popular broadcast mic. For those doing music work, it also takes lots of instruments well.
