Re320 is definitely an underrated mic. One thing people need to understand is the mic needs to fit your voice. I purchased an Sm7b twice before I concluded the Re320 (after a lot of testing different Mics) was best for my voice.

@@DarkCornerStudios I'll also say, at this point I'd rather use a condenser than a dynamic mic for talking head stuff. That's how I see it. Dynamics just don't capture the level of detail and sound muffled. There are a few that will get you "close" to a condenser, but you're better off buying a Rode Nt1 than the host of dynamics out there especially if your environment is somewhat controlled. If you're gonna spend SM7B + Cloudlifter money, buy a CAD E100s or used Neumann TLM102 (should really save up for the Neumann TLM103 or Sennheiser MKH416 though). I feel like a dynamic mic will always leave you wanting something better and never achieving the sound you want... Unless you want a radio sound and even then, a condenser is better.

@@theawsomekicker I haven't used that mic. It will probably perform better since it is a condenser microphone. I ended up being able to purchase an SM7B (yes, a third time) on sale for $240 brand new from Shure (they had a flash sale for 6 hours one day a few months ago). My two microphones these days are the SM7B and MKH 416. Both get used in different situations, but I own an RME Babyface Pro FS. Both mics are powered easily by the interface and I no longer worry about audio anymore. For what I do, I have achieve end game. Hope you're able to do the same and good luck.

First things first, you have excellent on-screen presence as a gear reviewer. Very enjoyable to watch, and very thorough. Keep it going! As a podcaster myself, I actually locked into watching this video because in fact, I own both! A luckier dude I could not be. I really like how both sound on my voice, and the Shure in my experience is flattering on almost any voice. That is versatility I really value. I’m sure exceptions in the wild exist, but I haven’t witnessed it. So they’re very complimentary for my purposes, as I’ve been building an in-home studio. I like trading them off with each other, depending on a number of factors. But most importantly, I know I can never go wrong. They’re like trying to pick a favorite child.

I need to do more with the SM7B for VO work before I am completely comfortable with it, but honestly it is a great all arounder...if you have the gain. The RE320 is kind of a tie in my mind... Really appreciate how you flip back and forth between the two signals throughout without announcing it... if ppl look away from the video an didn't know you were switching, they might not even notice (big picture), yet when you pay attention the differences are dramatic. I have both mics, got the RE320 first and then couldn't resist picking up the 'legend' SM7B to see for myself what all the fuss was about. The SM7B is great for sure, but the RE320 remains my go-to mic for podcasting and voiceovers. It's just so much more clear & present for me without any need for EQ'ing.

I ended up with an RE320 simply because the boomy bass of the SM7b was too much for my voice. I have a very bassy voice and in the 7b it just overtakes everything. Once I used the RE320 though it sounded much more balanced and the high end of my voice actually came out for once. It makes deep voices sound very pleasant whereas I feel like the 7b just makes deep voices sound deeper and too full in a way. I'd suggest the 7b to anyone who has a good mid-range voice or higher. But if you have a mid-range voice that extends into bass then I'd suggest the RE320. The RE320 can also be harsh at the higher ends for nasally voices, like if you watch Podcastage's video on it. His more nasally voice sounds harsh on the RE320.

I like the Re320 for the easyness. Put a bit of compression on it and the 'broadcast' sound is pretty much there. I love the SM7b in terms of how much I can shape the sound if that makes sense? Kind of makes me want both. Coming from the European broadcasting world where the SM7b is dominant, I still kind of lean to the SM7b.

Have used RE20 for years for basic vocal recording, recently it became damaged so reverted to RE320 which have had for a while but never used much. I was very pleasantly surprised as it flattered my voice in ways the RE20 did not, and neither did U87, TLM103, or the Aria, although all of these are far more expensive mics and work well on other voices I have recorded. A friend uses the SM7B but I noticed whilst it was accurate and detailed it did not flatter his voice either, so I guess it is down to try it and see...

There is no actual gain numbers out on the Motu M2 as to the amount of gain it puts out, though I know many that have used an sm58 with it and have been happy. Worst case you may have a bit of a low signal, but apparently it has rather impressive EIN...meaning it is very quiet when at high gain. So all in all, it should be fine, and if it isnt loud enough for you as is, you could always add a Fethead to the chain and it would be more than enough. Cheers and thanks for watching!

I appreciate the balanced comparison of the two mics without slamming one or the other! That said, I love the RE320 for Instruments, Especially for kick and toms with the "Kick EQ" on the drum side of things, But it also sounds killer on a Gretsch White Falcon through a Vox AC30 on the flat setting. I've also had good experiences with on certain vocals even in a live setting, I found the Variable D to be helpful in fighting the proximity effect on more bass-heavy male vocals.

I’ve owned an RE320 since 2015 and I’m still very happy with it, although I must admit I’ve toyed with the idea of buying an SM7B. I use the RE320 or podcasting with the mic about 4 inches from my mouth (probably because I set my I/O interface gain at only about 1:30). But now that I’m getting into making KZread videos and would like to have the mic positioned away from my face in the same place as yours is in this video I’ll try increasing the gain on my I/O to the 3:PM position that you said you used in this video. I’m using a Steinberg UR22 (the original model) into Logic Pro X and I’m curious to know which interface you used for this video. Thanks for this video which reaffirms my preference for the RE320.

I've always found the SM7B to be rather unremarkable and a bit compressed with a focused midrange. And people get the RE320 and the RE20 confused - they are NOT the same mic! The RE20 is a "broadcast standard" - but I usually like mics for voice that are flattering in some way - the SM7B and RE20 may just be too "honest" for me - and that may be why a lot of people (engineers) like them - the RE320 is a bit hyped on the top end IMO, but not in a bad way - it sounds a little more polished without the need for as much additional EQ - IF you have the right voice for it - it sounds great.

I’ve heard some people complain about the sound profile of treble on the SM7b but don’t even bother with the presence boost or low cut. It can help a lot with really bass heavy voices. That being said, the electro voice RE-whatever family does offer an extended frequency response right up to 20k Hz while the SM7b is rolling off sharply starting around 11k Hz. I think due to its AMAZING plosive rejection, for streaming and voice over work it can be very very useful if you don’t want a huge pop filter in your video. Of course there are better sounding mics, but the SM7b is compact compared to a condenser, shockmount, and pop filter. The SM7b has a great built in pop filter AND shock mount, which I think get overlooked

At the end you said "Maybe you're a bit confused." That's accurate, as I want to get rid of the proximity effect on my Shure SM7B, though depending on the KZreadr and their setup, EQ, etc, etc, sometimes the RE320 sounds better, sometimes it's the RE20, or the one I'm eyeballing the RE27N/D. Even though I just bought the 4th Gen Scarlett 2i2 with 69dB, I'm wanting to explore a hotter mic, with much less proximity effect for gaming voice over, and working more on my cringe Batman comedy skits I do sometimes lol. I feel the RE27N/D might be a good fit, though as you said, everyone's voice is different, and ultimately one mic can better compliment your natural voice. Watching your videos, and you testing out so much gear, what is YOUR #1 favourite mic and audio interface for just podcasting / talking on KZread?

OK! Great question! My "only mic I will ever need" is the Sennheiser MKH416. It is amazing...and it stays off camera Extra bonus is it is a condenser...but super directional...so really good off axis. As for interface...it doesn't really matter these days if it's just you doing solo mic work. The new 4th gen Scarlett looks promising. Basically anything with 65db-ish of gain

I can't ask my dad anymore, but I can ask you. I'm grateful for that. I've seen a lot of your videos. I would like to choose a microphone for voice-over. I am deciding between the RE320, SHURE SM7B and SM58/Beta58. I have one big problem! There is a train about 20 meters from my house every 15 minutes. Would the SM7B be the best choice because of the high noise? Thnak you verry much!

Yeah, not much is going to completely get rid of that, but any dynamic and a 150hz roll off on the low end should get rid of most of it. Usually with planes, trains and automobiles, it isnt the direct sound that is an issue, but more of the vibrations caused by them

RE320 sounds great, more clarity than the SM7B without sacrificing low end, but I do find it picks up a lot of room noise for a cardioid dynamic... The SM7B lacks so much sensitivity that it barely wants to pick up something less than an inch away! Having said that, I wonder if some limiting was applied to this video and the output on the RE320 was hotter, therefore it was more compressed in this video?

Just missing one point, SM7B is not the one Michael Jackson used, it was the SM7, the SM7B came after. For singing, the original SM7 sounds waaaaay better than the SM7B. The SM7 was introduce in 1973, then they changed something in the coil and another thing that I don't remember now, and it was introduced in 1999 as SM7A.., then they added a larger windscreen and introduced it in 2001 as SM7B. Even though the claim is that it sound acoustically identical, if you get an original SM7 and make a side by side with the SM7B, you'll noticed the difference. The SM7 was superb. The 7B is not bad.., but is not the same as the one it was used for Thriller album.

I think the SM7B sounds a bit better in a vacuum, but I can't keep away from the Electro-Voice mics because the variable D feature is invaluable for people with poor mic technique. It's very forgiving if you're too close or slightly off-axis. The RE-20 does sound a tad better and more neutral than the 320 as well, but isn't really worth the extra cash for people on a budget. I've seen the 320 on sale new for under $250 on occasion. I got mine on a cyber Monday blowout sale for $199 a couple of years ago.

The SM7B is the best ever, other great mikes tend to sound better but once in a mix with other instruments it stands out all others, the crispy that you wil find missing suddenly pops up out of nowhere while with the other good mikes you have to tame the crispyness and the too much highs... don't let the mike tests fool you, you got to test them in a recording and with mastering at the end and that will tell you the SM7B stands out them all, just like the sm57, sm58... they are standards for years not for nothing, don't let the cool look of other mikes fool you to....looking for a cheap alternative for the sm7b?? take a sm57 with a pop filter and it is amazing, maybe not in a test A vs B, but that is not how to gudge those mikes Shure designers are real genius, i can tell after 20 years trie to deny them and dislike them for the wrong reasons I only have to addmit I was wrong, they just arnt beaten yet after all those years...
