    Of the gazillion reviews I have visited on KZread only you have mentioned the FMR RNP. This preamp is in a class by itself I'm surprised that is so underated. Love your content man you rock!!!!!!!!!

    The reason I mentioned the RNP is because I’ve owned it for about 15 years. Back then, I would agree that it was in a class of its own. However, in the last 5 years, there have been major improvements in cheap preamp circuits, and there are now several audio interfaces with preamps that are, to my ear, just as good. Among those would be Behringer Midas preamps, focusrite scarlett 2nd or 3rd Gen, and even better is the focusrite Clarett, UAD unison, apogee, ssl2+.

I’m gonna convince my newest client to go w/ an FMR Really Nice Pre and a tube mic ( shoutout to @Vanguard V13 🤤 ) instead of splurging on an Avalon tube pre. Last step would be maybe add a higher end converter if the interface has digital input. Again, great vid 😊!

    Wow. Thank you so much. I just did some deep learning on an important subject I've been fuzzy about for years just by watching your video. Outstanding. One quick question. The specs on my interface (Apogee Symphony Desktop) show EIN as un-weighted. Is that the same as a-waighted? The full spec is: EIN: 129dB (un-weighted) @ 60dB, 150 Ohm input. I'd appreciate your clarification on it. Thanks again!

  • @Get.Beautiful.Recordings

    @Get.Beautiful.Recordings

    I know from experience that the preamps in the symphony are very good, but an un-weighted measurement is not helpful, and could be several Db’s different from an a- weighted measurement. Thanks for the question:)

    Small question, what about transformer-based preamps, like Neve 1073 etc? Are they a subset of solid state / transistor types? Or you’re planning to discuss them in a separate episode? Thanks in advance.

    Excellent question. The Neve 1073 uses transistors, and is therefore 100% solid state topology.

    Hello! I want to buy an Presonus Studio Channel for my Audient id4. Do u think i need an di boxes to don't damage the audio interface? Or i can pass directly to the Pressonus into Mic/Line ?

    I love the Audient Preamps for their transparency and clesness. Im currently using an ID14 mkii interface. And im thinking of getting the new ID24 so i can add the warm audio 1176 and LA2A clone preamps into the inserts.do you think this will help me improve on the quality of input i record and add some good harmonic distortion to the recording. Thanks

  • @Get.Beautiful.Recordings

    @Get.Beautiful.Recordings

    No, adding those compressors will not help you get better quality overall. They will give you a different type (or flavour) of compression, but not necessarily better than plugins. Most professional mixing engineers use plugins, not hardware. The Audient preamps are excellent.

    Hey! Quick question: I recently bought a Neve 5211 Preamp to go with my BLA 17 Compressor (which I only use sometimes). I was also considering buying an Audioscape Opto compressor (LA-2A clone) to complete the chain. The 5211 seems legit but it's so expensive. Could I get similar results with a less expensive preamp? I don't wanna cheap out but it's hard to believe my 5211 sounds day and night better than just my Neumann into the Apollo. My current vocal chain is Neumann U87 > BLA 17 > Apollo Twin X Duo Interface

  • @Get.Beautiful.Recordings

    I’m surprised you hear a night and day difference between the preamps in your Apollo, and a Neve. I think the Unison preamps in the Apollo are fantastic, and able to hold their own even compared to a Neve. There aren’t any inexpensive preamps that I know of that will perform to the level you want. A couple of the better valued ones, in my opinion, are the cranborne audio Camden ec2, and Useful Arts makes a very nice tube preamp. Honestly though, if you’re not happy with the Neve or the preamps in your Apollo twin, then I don’t think a more expensive preamp is going to make much of a difference. Hope this helps :)

    @@Get.Beautiful.Recordings hey, I think you misread my comment; I actually said it is hard to believe my Neve preamps are night and day better than my Apollo. I have yet to do a direct comparison, but I think I agree with you. The built in preamps in the Apollo Twin are extremely good, I would recommend just using them. Most dedicated outboard preamps wouldn't offer much of an improvement, unless you get into the very expensive price range, in which case I would recommend the Useful Arts SFP-60.
