Micronutrients Deserve More Attention (Episode 119)

Micronutrients deserve more attention. There's very little content about micronutrients, and the content that is out there is often full of fear-mongering or wild claims about wonder drugs and superfoods.
In this episode, we aim to provide a solid foundation for building a better understanding of micronutrients. Along the way, Greg also shares some fun facts that prove that micronutrients are way more interesting than you may have thought. (This is the first part of a micronutrient series we'll be doing on the podcast.)
At the end of the episode, Greg also answers a listener's question about the best way to train for bone health.

    I'm not buying another George R.R. Martin book until the entire Song of Ice and Fire is finished. If it ends anything like the TV series, I'll never finish it. I'll count it as a lost cause.

    I feel like talking about vitamin d recommendations and not mentioning highly melanated/darker folks living farther from the equator need more sun exposure to synthesize more vitamin d is also a WEIRD bias. Vitamin D deficiency is more prevalent among darker people and actually I don’t know another black woman who *hasn’t* heard from her doctor “your vitamin D is low, take a supplement” Also - unrelated, but I’m smiling so hard rn at how endearing it is to hear Greg talk about his small but heavy shiny thing and otters 😂 🙏🏾

    Topic request: I recently realized that most research comparing low to high volume training compares like i.e. one set per muscle to failure to higher volumes, or similar setups. The conclusion is that more volume is better. But this is very different from HIT training, where you a) do more than one exercise per muscle, b) go beyond failure (partials, drop sets, rest pause sets etc) c) split up the training for maximum recovery and minimum overlap of the trained muscles and d) drastically increase the amount of rest days(i.e. heavy duty by mike mentzer). So basically in the never ending debate between low and high volume, high volume has the clear lead compared to one set training, but one set training is not even remotely equal to a proper HIT routine. Or to say it differently: the research seems not to address the question if high volume training is better than HIT at all. It would be great if you could take a look at that!

    Unfortunately, COTD times don't line up with when I typically have time to play, but I'd like to participate at some point. I always play the track of the day, though, and typically try to at least get a gold medal time.

    Yeah fair enough gold on the TOTD is usually about right for me too (except when its too hard) and yeah hunting is a bit more relaxing than racing anyway.

    You are incorrect about the digestibility of soluble and insoluble fiber. Your intestinal bacteria can process them if they are fermentable. This is independent of the soluble and insoluble property.

    Insistence on video-less really hurts the educational value of this video. Verbally explaining the difference between amylose and cellulose, rather than an image. Also, a subset of people who hear of these things for the first time will have a hard time processing the information without knowing the spelling of the technical terminology.
