Everything Tom is saying also applies to commercial growing as well. He should write a book.

Love the zone and microclimate Tom talks about so very important my yard gets extremely strong Santa Ana wind where at my moms who lives a block away she hardly gets any wind. And the above ground factors are just one piece of the puzzle what’s at ground level is another from possible grading when the house was built to watering systems rain run off what trees or plants in each area or where your house sits I use my house to protect from the wind on things like bananas. Cheers

Wouldn't a better root system be beneficial before that "green color" on a young tree ? What about fertilization on Citrus due to it being a evergreen ?

Hello Ali Gendeel, Thank you for the compliment, and always great to hear from you!!! How old is your apple tree? Even though it is grafted, some trees take a few years to get established strong enough to support fruit. Other considerations are to introduce other varieties of apples to your garden to cross-pollinate with the Granny Smith... which even though they are self-fertile, benefit from cross-pollination. Here is a lesson we shared from the Laguna Hills Nursery discussing apple tree care from earlier this year: kzread.info/dash/bejne/ZWedmdGDgJDTpKQ.html There is another educational video by JudysHomeGrown.com where I ask her 10 Questions and she answers on a variety of gardening topics. Some of these will be helpful in making this growing season your best! Also, another most helpful tip for just about all my fruit trees, is making sure all trees have 2-4 inches of wood chips (mulch) around the root zone (under the trees canopy).... this tip is more important that fertilizer, watering, and pest control.... I hope these tips help!!! Charles :-)

Does the "no more than 25-30% pruning limit" play into effect in the case of fruit trees? Great talk! Thank you Charles. Thank you, Tom.

Hello Tom, Thank you for the compliment! :-) Pruning percentages vary depending on the goal, the tree, the season, etc, etc... For example, most research will support that citrus do not (or should not) be pruned... even though many growers (myself included) have noticed that citrus perform better with at least 5-15%, or so, amount of annual pruning (especially at the time of, or shortly after winter harvest). However, apricots can be pruned by 20-50% (or more) annually. Figs can be pruned by 50-80% annually. Etc, etc, etc.... A 20-30% limit is a good general rule to apply to make sure that you do not compromise the fruiting season... as major pruning can create a tree that will dedicate the year to growing to compensate for the overpruning. However, the more a fig grows, the more it fruits (on same year growth)... hence, heavy pruning. But, apricots & apples (among others) rely on flower buds from last year growth.... But can still handle 30%+ pruning without compromising fruit. I hope this helps... My interview with JudysHomeGrown.com (to be published tomorrow/ Sunday) goes into more details. Great question!! Charles :-)
