I have been abused in my childhood . Due to it I learned to block out chunks of time that hurt . So in that memory went away . I started having flashbacks at around 21 . Now I am 45 and have time to slow down and am facing a bunch of new famil secrets coming out in the old ones age that are tricky news for me and started flashbacks again for me so. That said I started looking into PTSD and that led to learning to build healthy boundaries. Well that led to me noticing that I do not match my feelings to my face so my husband has no clue what I really feel sometimes so ... Here I am . Could I ask since you have a interest in this subject could you lend me some resources you would recommend for my cause ? I do not wish to over step any lines of socially conversation. I tend to over talk a lot which I only have a few days experience really with these labors of crazy hard changes but it is out of love for myself and those around me be me first . That is big for me because the only subject I found that fit every thing going on with me ended saying every scan of these kinds of brains all have no activity in the parts of the brain that conects there ability to see and connect to there own selves is all dead or more like was stunted so badly threw its developmental ages so it never developed. Its very end said and this put the death nail in it for me. " These people many times are so disconnected with themselves that they do not even k ow when they have to go to the bathroom . I have always rushed because I do not notice I need to go before its bad . I know I say alot but this is so the tip of my racing brain . I have time on my hands and not much to do lol.

You can’t be dogmatic about micro expressions. They don’t always mean the same thing. It’s situationally dependent

The upper half of the face shows more true emotions than the lower part , i get tons of those microexpressions almost daily , condescending , surprise , disgust , fear , in that order , it's quite funny how a simple millisecond facial expression can reveal so much about a person's nature and stance within an interaction.

Patryk: - "Are you ready for the next video? Here we go!" Video: Patryk: - "Did you catch the contempt on the right side of the mouth?" 😂 [Patryk analizing the emoji] Patryk: - "The emoji may appear to be smiling, but if you see the eyebrows are actually raised and coming together and you can also see the tears streaming down from the eyes... this is not a face with tears of joy, but in fact a person concealing the sadness with a fake smile as also evidenced by the lack of crinkling of the skin near the outside of the eyes" 😂😂😂

Be careful with the narrowing of the eyes. People don't only do it when they are angry, but also when they try to focus in on something (sometimes even an image inside their mind) Narrowing of the eyes alone is not enough of a tell for anger. Also in clip five I'd say that the contempt you point out on the right side looks more like a half sided display of disgust, since it is more vertical and it also shows in the nose tensing. I do see a slight sign of contempt before that on the left side. In Clip 6 First example: The first sign of contempt is earlier, but from the point on you describe what you see it is a little different. Both sides of the mouth twitch up wich is a sign of happiness, but since afterwards the right side rises more it is probably a mixture of happiness and contempt (Not suprisinng that you'd see these expressions mix, don't you think?) Video 7 You like to focus on contempt don't you. Maybe it is also because the other emotions aren't Micro enough for you, but this is a beautiful logical riff of emotions right here. First there is a genuine smile than it is combined with anger. I'd interpret that as something like "I got you" or "I'll show you" which gets topped of by the contempt you see, which I strengthens my point of view. She is happy about the situation, ready to attack and thinks she is in the winning position. Video 9 You can even see the lips tensing up horizontal and the nose is flaring which strengthens your interpretation of fear even more :) Video 10 I'm not sure about the disgust, could be that his nose is itching. Be carful to jump to conclusions to quickly (confirmation bias) I think you might have missed hints of dissapointment. Video 11 starts with a short sign of fear, before it moves into the mix of anger and contempt. Video 14she displyas happiness and contempt. The eyebrows might move a little bit slow and you can't see the suprise in the eyes. There are more incidents when people raise there eyebrows. For example in the unconcious hello. but in this case, combined with the smile ant contempt, it goes probably in the direction of marking out "See, I told you so!" or something of that kind.

That is exactly what I thought right away, however the lighting obscures the contours on the left making it look like it didn't move. If you look very closely and maybe even slow the video down to .5x speed you can see it moves in the same direction as the other side.

I do wonder if 3:25 is just him holding back an unexpressed opinion. Here his lips don't seem pressed but they disappear into his mouth. Later on, near the end of the video, he repeats this but his lips are visible and clearly pressed, which tells me that you're right about the second one, it's anger. With that out of the way, I'm super thankful for these examples. My guesses were quite good in the beginning, but it was more difficult to get the more subtle expressions in realtime. Before halfway through, I noticed a clear improvement in reading the faces in realtime! So thank you so much!

Great video ! but sometimes I feel that we over analyse micro-expression. We confuse micro-expression which are universal and last less than 1/2 second with unconscious or fake facial expression (+ 0,5 second) And I'd know how to interpret a single micro-expression as contempt or even construe several micro-expression at once. For exemple, what could mean happiness, disgust, fear at the same time ?

Great Videos:) I wanted to ask two things of you. 1. In video 10, you recognized three emotions, Surprise, Disgust and Comment. How could you differentiate between disgust (Touching of nose while nose crinkling) and an innocent scratching of the nose? 2.This is not a question but more of a request. Like the Body language test that you have on your website, could you also create an app for the same? It's easier to access on mobile phone (on the move) and helps with a more rigorous practice.

yep i get the spotting of micro expressions , the face lends itself to very different cognitive thinking going on. the lady with the surprise and contempt..actually looks to be enjoying something. what i mean is ..there is mind reading under the emotions. what are they reacting to , ? We live a world where people suppress emotions - so learning these "subjects "is healthy . if we can safely start to become less inhibited and better communicate and express needs.. better for everyone. but what people think in terms of words , is important to. i wonder if ,in the same way people where dum'd down intellectually - see john Taylor gatto ,something parallel with emotional numbing down has happened. cant be good for mental health ,locking into being less expressive or getting depressed is like locking into sadness and contempt discuss ... sort of thing ..could be., if we unlock are emotional expression ,i think more intimacy and happiness might result. it's very socially active ..stuff

Yeah, that's totally contempt! I was focused on her eyebrows >. Good catch. It even explains the nod, it was the librarian stare.

If it was more symmetrical than it appears, then I'd say it was an eyebrow flash of recognition, the smile would then indicate that she recognized a question that she feels confident about answering. But it sure looks asymmetrical to me.

It's a micro expression. It doesn't require a full blown emotion. Keep in mind it's one of the categories used. The feeling itself is probably more subtle than direct disgust etc.

In the context of these videos, it's a feeling of superiority, disregard to someone/something, comparing yourself to others; and it could be also feeling proud.

Okay.. in my humble opinion: Imagine: People are talking to you. It's early. You haven't had your morning coffee yet. It's Monday.. the "Ugh, go away" feeling towards the brightly chattering people? That one.. that's one example... Or: your grandmother tells you the Moon and the Sun are the same celestial body in the sky. It doesn't matter how many times you have told her otherwise and actually showed her both the Sun and Moon in the sky at the same time, she stays convinced you're wrong. The "Okay, Grandma.." That one .. You're on KZread. Someone makes a comment you think is ridiculous. Instead of explaining, or really adding anything to the conversation, you write a sharp little zinger meant to let everyone know that you think the other person is a moron.. That one too... Different versions involving the same emotion..

@@congratulationslol2826 anger management does not prevent you from feeling anger, it teaches you to manage it. Considering the only hints of anger from him were microexpressions lasting a fraction of a second each, I would consider his anger management excellent.

Arjay Tuazon I had the same problem understanding that “content” was actually “contempt”. I wasn’t hearing the “m” at all. I’m glad I wasn’t the only one who misunderstood. 😊

Video 2 is sadness, not anger. "Anger" is the diagnosis too many times, while I think that there is simply not enough range of emotion allowed with these verdicts. I do not see anger so often as maybe doubt/unbelief, disagreement, scrutiny.
