His monthly listeners on spotify let's me know how slept on he is smfh
Kinda baffles me how slept on Mick is cuz he’s an all trick pony. Bros pengame is cracked, flow is crazy, beat selection is great, and he can sing. It’s gotta be because of the kinda projects he makes and how the focus is usually on the writing but I know he could drop an incredible album with hits. I’d love to see him explore his musical diversity the same way someone like Mac Miller did cuz he’s got all the tools to pull off so many styles. I know he wasn’t happy with his label situation but I’d love to see him get really ambitious with an album. I wanna hear a long project from him with some grand production. I think he could make a classic

He just falls into a trap that a lot of rappers in his lane do which is not standing out all that much. Like I never really hear something and go “ah, classic Mick right there,” unless he’s talking about water I guess lol.

I honestly think his beat selection is the issue. Aside from when he links with Kaytranada (which isn't nearly enough), most of the beats he chooses for his own albums post-The Waters just sound clunky and unappealing. Sure, they fit his flow, but it doesn't invite all that much replay value. This album was a step in the right direction in that respect. (Also, diversifying his feature choices didn't hurt here either.)

@@thefilmseekerthis is it right here. Mick Jenkins on the Waters has great beats. After that, we got Ps and Qs, Headass, and a few other tracks for really unique and good sounds.

His career reminds me of the likes of Blu and Big K.R.I.T. in that it’s clear he’s a supreme talent but also not really someone I see having much mainstream appeal/breakout potential despite the initial hype around their breakout mixtapes. Both of the above famously couldn’t make it work at major labels and get that crossover moment to happen and if Jenkins was having label trouble too that wouldn’t shock me. However, they are all rightfully known for dropping consistent, excellent work throughout their careers and have devoted fans. It’s not a bad lane to be in, a consistent career is better than what 99% of other rappers ever achieve. It’s not exactly culture-defining but then not everyone can be.

@@ohnoitsdominoes5393 good comparison. Let’s just hope Jenkins doesn’t go the KRIT route by squandering his good will with mediocre albums one after the other just as soon as he hits his indie stride and drops his best shit.
One of my favorite rap projects of the year. Mick shows his unbelievable pen game all over this.
"Pasta" is so good in my opinion. Incredible lyrics, flows and the aggression in his voice is intense and visceral

Mick is one of the most slept on rappers in the game! Amazing lyricist and great beat selection. His tiny desk is amazing too! Edit: Mick is going on tour. I really encourage people to go see him! We have to support his work. Tickets are super reasonable too. He a real one.

Most solid Mick project since Pieces of a Man in my opinion. Glad he landed Freddie and JID as features.
Mop is honestly one of the hardest outros I’ve heard on any project this year. Such an incredible track.
I really appreciate the shorter duration of this LP, we really need more focused projects and less 18 to 23 songs with lots of garbage fillers with nothing to say. The Patience is a strong 9 for me.
@CourtneyBishopPOA

Strong 9 for me, too!
Every track was great on this project not one skip 10/10 for me definitely one of my favorite albums this year
I love how Fantano conceptually related this album to his rollout of this video. True artistry
Thank you Mr Fanta for finally reviewing the album!! I could really feel my patience begin to dwindle with every passing day and I'm glad I can finally have an opinion on this album after 4 months!!
You’re description of his pen game making you wanna rewind a song is so true, first time I listened to this album I immediately replayed multiple songs
I love the trend of these short but sweet hip-hop projects that have been coming out, they make returning to them so much easier and so much more fun, I can easily squeeze this album in at any point of the day, and the quality makes me want to!
Anybody else remember Micks Or more; projects? The frustration and the anxious really gave that same level of angst as this project.
One of the most underrated lyricists and rappers out there!!
7 is a solid score BUT, no way this album deserves anything less than an 8 fr. This is album is a serious contender for rap album of the year
This is my favorite rap album of the year personally. I accidentally bought 2 vinyls of this record and have no regrets. Ones for listening ones for display.
This might sound like a hot take but those Freddie and Benny features kind of showed how just okay/good those rappers are. I love Freddie and Benny but idk when I heard both of them I had the same reaction “oh yeah that’s them!” Mick killed them on both of those tracks. “Y’all got a margarine message, ain’t gotta be butter just as long as it spread”😅”money age like grapes nigga we getting fermented bags” lmao he’s a monster

“Ain’t no stopping me I’m above can’t, we apostrophes” is just STUPIDLY clever. I love the love that Freddie n Benny n Conway (n everyone basically associated w the whole Griselda label) have gotten over the past few recent years, but I been saying that Mick STILL has one of the best pens in the game. Even with some of the newcomers like JID, Denzel etc. Micks bars are still in elite company

naah man Freddie and Benny are exceptional too, they prolly just didn't do as good on the features here for you, which is valid. But both of those guys have solid discographies of their own, and some all timer tracks.

Thank you for eventually reviewing this one. Was the one album I wanted a review for most this year. Really loved this one
I’m actually so fucking happy right now. I don’t care about the score this winds up getting, thank you for reviewing this fantano, it deserves the love.
its at least 8/10. one of my favourite rap albums of the year
We *patiently* waited for this album review. Thank you for giving me an opinion on this album, Mr. Fantano!
Had to have The Patience for this review with how long its been since it's release. I remember liking his song The Light, but after hearing Smoke Break Dance, I finally decided to make the jump and listen to his discography. A lot of solid stuff and this album is one of this years best. Vic Mensa'a feature was nice and 007 is definitely my favorite track, very motivating... At least for me. It's a shame it doesn't get enough love, but I can see why people would prefer the other songs over it.
This might’ve been the best rap album I heard all year. Great beat selection, powerful verses and delivery from Mick, and some of my favorite lines of the year. It was short, sweet, and straight to the point. Brilliant stuff
One of my favorite albums this year. Top tier rapping. Strong 8!
About freakin' time Fantanus.. Been bumpin' this album all year....
Dam it’s really about to be 10 years since the waters…😩
Glad you went back to this. Mick is my favorite rapper.
Good Lord it took forever to for him to get to this. Deserved more points if I'm being honest Mick too consistent
I agree with so many others in the comments. Mick, and this album, is so slept on. I went back and replayed multiple songs, multiple times. I love the one dimensionality of 007 and 2004, am a huge THC album fan, and am excited for Mick's future. I feel so much potential in him. The Patience gets a strong 9 from me.
Glad he's giving this album some coverage.
Pasta is probably one of the best hip hop songs this year for sure
This was definitely amongst my favourite rap albums of the year. I didnt really mind the brevity since Mick finally sounded like he was hungry on thr mic. Its definitely gotten a lot of spins from me.
You’re awesome Anthony, keep doing the work these streaming platforms fail to do.
I love it when mick Jenkins drops. I have been a fan of this man since he dropped water, and I don't think he gets as much recognition as he deserves. Easy 8/10 album for me. I just wish it was long, and I didn't like 2 songs off of it, so that's why I can't give it a 9/10. But the other 9 tracks on this thing awesome all 3 features that show up on the album are great, and the mick drops a Contender for verse of the year on the song pasta.
Top 3 rap album this year. So overlooked... glad you finally reviewed it but this is easily a strong 8

Respect Anthony for finally reviewing this gem
Finally! I’ve been waiting since august to decide if I like this album or not
ive been really patient waiting for this review
i played mop so much this year. such a great song. great album. love mick
Pasta is my favourite song on this album. I got into Mick this year and this is definitely a good introduction.
Crazy he didn’t mention farm to table, definitely one of the best tracks on the LP. Not to mention a very solid verse from Vic Mensa of all people!
damn, long wait indeed, almost 4 months lmao im glad you ended up getting to it
Seeing an album from so long ago get a review is cool. I think it’s a cool idea for Fantano to review albums he finds interesting regardless of release date
haven’t heard much of Mick since The Water(s) days, aside from this album which i’m definitely going to listen to is there anything else worth checking out?
Solid listen and what I was hoping for following the Waters 10 years ago

We appreciate your insights. Keep working hard.
Thank you for finally reviewing this

That 7 was pretty well deserved, but a 7 is not a number one would use to describe my new album called "Simian". Listen now or 20 years of misfortune. If you love Anthony Fantano and want to kiss his hairy face, you'd love my record.
The aggressiveness in PASTA still slaps
smoke break-dance is easy song of the year for me
