    Kinda baffles me how slept on Mick is cuz he’s an all trick pony. Bros pengame is cracked, flow is crazy, beat selection is great, and he can sing. It’s gotta be because of the kinda projects he makes and how the focus is usually on the writing but I know he could drop an incredible album with hits. I’d love to see him explore his musical diversity the same way someone like Mac Miller did cuz he’s got all the tools to pull off so many styles. I know he wasn’t happy with his label situation but I’d love to see him get really ambitious with an album. I wanna hear a long project from him with some grand production. I think he could make a classic

    He just falls into a trap that a lot of rappers in his lane do which is not standing out all that much. Like I never really hear something and go “ah, classic Mick right there,” unless he’s talking about water I guess lol.

  • @thefilmseeker

    @thefilmseeker

    I honestly think his beat selection is the issue. Aside from when he links with Kaytranada (which isn't nearly enough), most of the beats he chooses for his own albums post-The Waters just sound clunky and unappealing. Sure, they fit his flow, but it doesn't invite all that much replay value. This album was a step in the right direction in that respect. (Also, diversifying his feature choices didn't hurt here either.)

    @@thefilmseekerthis is it right here. Mick Jenkins on the Waters has great beats. After that, we got Ps and Qs, Headass, and a few other tracks for really unique and good sounds.

    His career reminds me of the likes of Blu and Big K.R.I.T. in that it’s clear he’s a supreme talent but also not really someone I see having much mainstream appeal/breakout potential despite the initial hype around their breakout mixtapes. Both of the above famously couldn’t make it work at major labels and get that crossover moment to happen and if Jenkins was having label trouble too that wouldn’t shock me. However, they are all rightfully known for dropping consistent, excellent work throughout their careers and have devoted fans. It’s not a bad lane to be in, a consistent career is better than what 99% of other rappers ever achieve. It’s not exactly culture-defining but then not everyone can be.

  • @thefilmseeker

    @@ohnoitsdominoes5393 good comparison. Let’s just hope Jenkins doesn’t go the KRIT route by squandering his good will with mediocre albums one after the other just as soon as he hits his indie stride and drops his best shit.

Even with some of the newcomers like JID, Denzel etc. Micks bars are still in elite company

    Had to have The Patience for this review with how long its been since it's release. I remember liking his song The Light, but after hearing Smoke Break Dance, I finally decided to make the jump and listen to his discography. A lot of solid stuff and this album is one of this years best. Vic Mensa'a feature was nice and 007 is definitely my favorite track, very motivating... At least for me. It's a shame it doesn't get enough love, but I can see why people would prefer the other songs over it.

I just wish it was long, and I didn't like 2 songs off of it, so that's why I can't give it a 9/10.
