    A story that is often untold of the Mankind-Taker match, when they were stalling for Foley to recover, Sgt Slaughter pitched an audible for Terry Funk to square up with taker. Terry got right up with Taker, and Taker mouthed back "See if he's still breathing." Terry confirmed it, getting a reply from taker of "Thanks." And then Chokeslammed Terry so hard his shoes flew off, one going right over a rising Foley. Foley remembers mouthing to himself "The hell is a shoe doing here?"

    For my third and final story: TripleH vs Foley. The intended finish of the match, with Foley as the source, was to see the first pin of the ending sequence finish it. Foley accidentally kicked out of instinct, prompting him to go "Shit, I'm sorry." TripleH, respecting the legend, would go "What do we do?" And that was when Mick suggested the Pedigree into the thumb tacks. A quick "Are you sure?" From TripleH later, they hit the iconic spot.

  • @superbaas8822
    @superbaas88223 ай бұрын

    If you want a story to make you respect Randy Orton even more, the original pitch was that Foley would go down into the tacks. Even Foley telling Orton to RKO him into it, he refused, and Orton did the iconic spot out of respect for the man willing to give it all.

    I sometimes bounce around who my favorite wrestler of all time is at any given moment but Mick Foley is absolutely my undisputed #1 pick. When I was a teen people would say I looked like him to be mean to me because of his chubby build but I took it as a massive compliment because I loved watching him wrestle so much.

And what better way for him to have was put I'm in the style of match he helped make famous amd was probably the most comfortable in.

    As someone who was a teenager for the Attitude Era, in many ways I was the perfect age for the original Mankind run, and I would rent all of the pay-per-view's (I would invite friends over and everyone would pitch in $5 - covered our show and snacks). I still remember watching that Hell in the Cell when Mick was first thrown off of the cell, and then taking the bump through the cell. Hearing their thoughts after the fact is super interesting, and finding out that Mick Foley went into that whole thing with an incredible fear of heights but that, in his opinion, after that absolute banger that Shawn Michael's and Undertaker put on in the first Hell in the Cell, saying that he knows that he is nowhere near as athletic as Michael's (fair) and that he would have to be creative to try and be a part of anything half as legendary, but of course his dedication to wrestling and entertaining wrestling fans, with an ungodly ability to take punishment would go on to create not just one of the most defining Hell in the Cell matches, but would go down in history as one of the most memorable and all-time great matches. The I Quit match between Foley and the Rock was... Well, it was brutal and especially between being older and how much more we know about head trauma, and the more I know about how wrestlers typically blocked most of the chair shots energy with their hands... It arguably shouldn't have been allowed then and definitely doesn't seem like it would be allowed nowadays, but at the same time Mick Foley, Mankind, he built a reputation for taking the worst, most absolutely brutal bumps and nothing would stop him from coming back. So in terms of storytelling, legacy, and send-off, it was the right and fitting choice for him to go out in such a brutal fashion. He also used this as an opportunity to really help build the legitimacy of the absolute brutal lengths the Rock was going to go to in order to win. Absolute horror to watch, and I know he has a world of cognitive issues that, may or may not have been created then, but were definitely not made any better by the event. I also feel so bad for his wife and kids watching that, knowing that they had legitimate fear for his life. When it comes to being an entertainer, a wrestler willing to put themselves through the meat grinder, willing to destroy their body to entertain people, there aren't many, arguably no one else who has done what he has done, achieved what he has, and reached the levels of pop culture stature that he was able to. For his physical and mental well-being, he should have done something more gentle in life, but no one can say that he didn't give us fans everything he had in him, and more than we could have ever expected or asked for from anyone. The memories, his contributions to pro-wrestling, his willingness to put people over and making them look like incredibly beasts in the process, he will forever be cherished in the wrestling community as an important historical pillar in the story of wrestling. Also, I feel like John Moxley would have fit the Foley era of brutality perfectly. It's a shame he didn't arrive onto the scene until long after Foley had already given his best and more.
