Michigan's Keweenaw By Air | Mortons on the Move

Michigan's Keweenaw By Air | Mortons on the Move
Keweenaw Drone Video
We spent a few weeks in Michigan's Keweenaw Peninsula during summer 2015 and did some filming of the scenery. The Keweenaw is home to Michigan Technological University, the birthplace of professional hockey and Michigan's most northern point. There is a rich mining history in the area and some scenes of mining ruins and tailings can be seen in the video.
Locations filmed are as follows:
Cliff Drive :17 :51
Hungarian Falls :30
Horseshoe Harbor :40
Jacobs Falls :44
Jacobsville/Portage Entry Lighthouse 1:07
Torch Lake Dredger 1:18
Houghton (Left) Hancock (Right) 1:23
Michigan Tech 1:34
Quincy Smelter 1:38
Quincy Hoist 1:45
Copper Harbor 1:51
Gay Stamp Sands 2:08
Redridge Steel Dam 2:26
Freda 2:34
Great Sand Bay 2:50
Portage Canal Entrance Breakers 2:58
Brockway Mountain Drive 3:01

It's absolutely stunning! I recommend visiting the Porcupine Mountain State Park as well. It's not really far from the Keewenaw Peninsula. If you're coming through western Wisconsin/Minnesota area, it's actually on the way ...kinda.

Great video! Thanks for that. I've been hanging out in the Keewenaw a couple of weeks every year of my life and never saw the steel dam in Atlantic Mine or the Stamp Mill in Freda. I guess I should spend time south of the lift bridge too. I'll be checking these out this summer!

+Mortons on the Move Closest I've seen to this is back in the early 70's. One of the airlines serving Hancock at the time ran short sightseeing flights in the fall for a very reasonable price. They went up the east side of the Keweenaw, around the point, and back down the west side to the airport. Similar views, but much less close and personal.

That's ok, we like people who visit, enjoy and leave soon after. Remember to respect the place and not throw trash everywhere like a lot of visitors do! I've been picking up and filling countless trash bags every year, mostly comprised of organic vegan mixed nuts, granola wrappers, water bottles etc. We really didn't have many tourists until the rise of social media over the past 8 years, up until recently you needed a truck with a lift to access most of the keweenaw, last year I was camping, standing there half naked shooting my pistol at a dead tree when some tourists pulled up, the panic on there faces... priceless!😂

Thats right on the edge of my property in Gay, "the Gay sands" Its waste from the mines and full of hazardous material. If it interests you, there was a post apocalypse movie from the 80's filmed out there, don't recall the name but have it on an old VHS.

@@armedpatriot80536 I own property right next to the Gay sands and grew up there. Remember that its waste from the mine and hazardous to breath the dust in excess, wear a P-100 dust mask if out there riding. There was a movie from the 80's filmed there, its about post apocalypse mutants who live under the sands, maybe I'll take the time to upload it one of these days.
