Michelin Pilot Sport 4S vs Michelin Pilot Sport All Season 4 vs Michelin X-Ice Snow

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

In this video we test the differences between a summer road tire, the Michelin Pilot Sport 4S, an ultra high performance all season tire, the Michelin Pilot Sport All Season 4 and an extreme / nordic winter tire, the Michelin X-Ice Snow, on snow to find the real performance differences between the three categories of tires.
You can see the full data from the test here: www.tire-reviews.com/Article/...
THE WINTER TIRE LAPTIME IS MEANT TO BE 1.23.91. The differences are correct.
Is a UHP all season tire really much better than a summer tire on snow? Can the winter / snow tire dominate the test? Watch the video to find out!
Follow Tyre Reviews on instagram here: / tyre_reviews
All three tires are leaders in their respective categories, with all the tires having won independant group tests in the past few years.
Each tire is tested in traction (acceleration), braking and a timed snow handling lap.
The tires were tested on snow at the Keweenaw Research Center in North Michigan, USA.
All tires tested are the popular 245/40 R18.

video suggestion unless its already been done.. could we see equal tyres but worn? so 1.0mm (illegal) vs 1.6mm (legal) vs 3mm vs new? I think it'll be interesting to see in the dry how a "slick" tyre would do in the dry vs wet, and then equally with tread depth. Obvioulsy bald would be worse in wet, but by how much? Aquaplaning on the bald tyre is how much worse?

The first year I had my E60 M5 I got caught out in some sleet/freezing rain on the Pilot Super Sports that were on the car when I bought it. Even though nothing was sticking to the road, just a freezing, wet road made it almost impossible to get the car up the slightest incline out of the parking lot I was in at the time. That one instance made it clear to me the importance of tire designs and compounds, and I can assure that I will never make the same mistake again. Great comparison / review as always!

I've already gone through one rainy day with them, and just for those moments I think they're worth it. I definitely wouldn't have made it anywhere with the PS4S it had. @@vollcare4076 Completely agree. I'd even draw that same conclusion at a higher temp than 40/41 fahrenheit, or roughly 5 C. Yes, the original PSS is an incredible tire in the dry (perhaps even better than the newer 4s) but traction drops considerably every 1 degree below 50 F. Considering how well those AS4's perform in the summer, that's outstanding winter performance. I used to swap between a set of 235 width 19" Pilot Super Sports and a set of 225 width 18" Alpin PA4's on a Focus RS... In the summer it was compromised in anything but warm, dry weather (the balance with the PSS's in the rain was *not* good, grip at both ends was just binary), and in the winter it felt compromised until there was *actually* snow or cold rain on the ground. Now I run 235 width 18" AS4's year round and it feels better than either the PSS's or 99% of the time.

A big part of that is that the Super Sports are actually now outdated. They were a big step forward in "summer" tires when they first came out, but as soon as Michelin released the Pilot Sport 4S, almost all of the SuperSport tires were outmatched due to a large difference in research and development. The only ones that have maintained some relevance are the model specific tires, such as the Corvette specific Super Sports.

I actually performed this exact test myself to show my friends what a modern high quality all season tire can do and what a summer tire cannot do (we al used to used summer tires but we all moved to a region that has light snow and even in the lightest of snow the summer tires were extremely dangerously slippery and we could not drive those cars until we switched to the high quality summer tires, after seeing you videos, of course, to select the best tires) Thank you! I would like to add that the All-Season tire is much less effective than the Winter tires in icy conditions, based on my experience in sub-zero temps in Alaska. Inclines and getting moving were very difficult if not impossible (ended up getting stuck several times) on the all-seasons. Winter tires negated this issue entirely. Edit: Tires were Michelin Pilot Sport A/S 4's and Continental VikingContact 7's.

Really making me want to switch off my dedicated winters (General Altimax Arctics) for these All Seasons. Instead of having 1 set UHP summers (Hankook RS4 for track and daily) and winters, I can do one daily All Season set year round and keep my fun time track tires off the car and for the track. Living in New Jersey, USA, our roads are plowed and cleared relatively quickly after a snow storm, but we all do our fair share of snow/wet road driving throughout the season. Great video! Loved it, and I got caught out once in my WRX with the RS4s in a weird early november snowstorm. Looked really similar to you sliding about on the 4S, except I had 0 traction to get moving even with AWD. I literally could not get up/out of an on ramp (slip road?) and ended up getting hit by someone that slid a bit off the road. Friends don't let friends drive summer tires in the winter.

Super helpful video. I purchased the Pilot Sport All Season 4, and watched all of your other videos and looked at your site. The one place I was not 100% confident in the decision over another all-season was the winter performance for occasional light snow -- I was perhaps 85% confident -- but this video brought me to 100%. I have not traversed the snow yet, but I am incredibly satisfied with my purchase based on the dry and wet performance (warm and cold) that I have experienced thus far -- and it sounds like I will be pleased in the snow within (in excess of?) the range of all-season tire capability.

The day before I was planning to park my BMW Z3 Roaster for the winter ( I am in Canada),......it snowed. The storage garage was two (2) blocks away, but the Michellin Pilot Sports the car was wearing could NOT move the car an Inch forward or backward, in any gear! The cold had turned the tires into hockey pucks. Had to call for a flatbed tow truck to load the car up and deliver it to the storage facility. Lesson learned, I sacrificed some performance (on wet and dry) and got a set of UHP BF Goodrich A/S, that won't leave me stranded, ever. Great review as always, really enjoy your work. :)

What a fascinating comparison, Jon. This was very instructive, as I have the PS4S on my Z and was curious as to how it would handle under adverse conditions. As you mentioned, the PS4S performs surprisingly well for a maximum performance summer tire but it clearly was never designed to handle snow. I wouldn't even consider venturing onto roads with any kind of snow covering with these tires. The degradation of handling performance of the PS4S on snow is probably indicative of how most of these high performance summer tires would fare on snow. If I lived in a climate that saw snow in the winter I would have to keep a set of PS4S all season tires on hand to have mounted during the winter. This is one of the reasons that I like living in the San Diego and SF bay areas, as I can drive all year with summer high performance tires. Keep up the good work. BTW: I've put 20K miles on my set of PS4S tires and have barely worn off ½ of the tread. I can't rotate my tires but I have dialed in the correct inflation pressure for the tires and I am getting even wear across the tread.

I put a set of the Pilot Sport All Season 4 on my Golf R this spring and was interested to see how it would handle a bit of snow. Well the snow came late and all at once. They weren't quite up to the extreme conditions but after the roads were cleared performed fine on hard-packed snow. I can corroborate that they perform better longitudinally than laterally, surprisingly so. In starting and braking the seat of the pants feel is that they work almost as well as dedicated winters. They fall off once you start sliding sideways though -- I'll put the Blizzaks back on for the rest of the season.

I need to negotiate a decent hill to get to my house (and it's often not plowed yet by the time I get to it) and those tires make a big difference compared to the Primacy MXM and Energy MXM all seasons the cars wore before. If I didn't need to negotiate that hill I could probably still get by with all seasons since it's not constant unplowed snow in the Rhode Island area. And the PS4S segment was funny.

It is astonishing how close all season tires are performing in the snow compared to dedicated winter tires these days. As I live in a state where we do see blizzards bringing in 12~18 inches of snow, but we also see a lot of sunny but cold and dry winter days, I'm considering all season tires for my winter wheels next time. One question I do have, is how do these all seasons perform in the snow if they are at half of tread remaining? I have heard of some all season tires that only perform well in snow for the first 2/32~4/32nds then the snow grip drops off very quickly.

All weathers are becoming the new all seasons. I've heard good things about them, but think I will stick to dedicated winter tires for now. I might consider them for my summer tires though. I always worry about those early season snows (sometimes we'll get a storm as early as September), before I've put on the winter tires; or a late season storm after I've taken them off. Having all weather tires on there during the summer would make me rest easier.

Update now that I've got them on: I've gotten past the 500ish miles of wear in and have driven a bit in light snow. It's definitely still an all season. Super competent if you're just trying to get by in light snow, and will confidently keep up with traffic, but definitely not the kind of tire to go winter rallying on. Doesn't really hold up to hard driving in snow. I'd imagine anything deep enough to push the car around or test ground clearance would be hard. More than good enough for the weather out here, since I don't need to go commuting in the middle of a storm and we have good plowing. On pavement it's a good tire. I get a bit less feel than the stock Bridge S001 but it's a much more competent, smooth, and confidence inspiring tire. Especially in the wet. It's clearly not a UHP Summer tire, but it's extremely impressive considering this works in all temperatures. The stock Bridgestone's always felt a bit oddly hard and stiff to me, so this is quite a bit more natural, but does emphasize the Miata's tendency to glide over the road. The AS4 fits my use case well.

It seems like a good idea to drive on them during spring-summer-autumn, especially during the crossover around freezing temperatures, and then switch to real winter tyres when the heavy snowfall and -10°C hits. @@tyrereviews Yup. I still have Fulda KC HP2 (and they're medium range, not budget) that I got with the car and they're a bit average yet predictable in wet. However, in real snow they can climb and stop surprisingly good, easily outperforming a couple of premium models I personally favor. Still I won't stick to them with the next buy, as I need more all-rounded tyre on this car, being used in around the city, European conditions most of the time. The 'snow oriented' Fulda doesn't perform so good in there, and I prefer shorter braking in the wet for ca. 100 days around the city rather than having superb snow performance during those 5-7 days a year ;) When we pay for premium all-season or winter we get something that should be more predictable and fit for purpose, so to put it :) Your test also showed exactly how I feel about the tyres, so thanks again for that and keep up with this hobby (aka. job).

@Sebastian Gode well actually here in Belgium, we have like max 10 days of snow per year, and we use salt to make it melt on the roads. So the worst case is approx 1 day of snow. When we have snow, because some years we literally don't have any. Switching to wintertyres is imo useless in Belgium for these reasons. 4 season tyres eventually but still they offer some disadvantages as well. I have a set of the PS AS4 on my Chevy Bolt. I use them as a 3 season tire and they work brilliantly for that, substantially better grip than the stock Michelin eco tires. I have a set of winter tires for the snow. Aside from rolling resistance, the AS4 tires are absolutely brilliant for a daily driver. I’ve even used them on a track day and while a summer or track specific tire would have obviously been better, they still have excellent grip and they weren’t destroyed at the end of the day. I’ve not used them in the snow since I have dedicated winter tires for that, but they are excellent in cold weather and rain. My only gripe about them is that I see about a 10-15% drop in efficiency versus the stock eco tires, which is a bit painful since most of my driving is highway commuting, but the increased confidence in the rain and the improved safety to be able to stop and steer (especially in the rain) make up for it. It’s also good to know that if I got surprised by the snow, I wouldn’t be totally screwed either (something than many American “all-season” tires cannot say). It would be good to see how the AS4 compares to the Crossclimate in dry, wet and snow as well, since that may be a tire that some people are cross shopping.

I learned this lesson the hard way many years ago when I got caught in a freak fall sleet storm with summer tires. I could only manage a few mph by keeping the passenger side tires in the gravel. When I got to a bridge where the gravel ended, I had to wait until there was no traffic and then white-knuckle it (once I spun around mid-bridge and wasn't sure I was going to be able to get safely off). When I finally made it to an exit (fortunately it had a hotel just off the highway) and the weather was really getting bad, I tried to get the car into a parking spot. It was one of those places with lower center driveway and drainage spots, with the parking spaces at a slight incline 90-degrees to the driveway. I finally got into one and came to a stop. The car slid backward (with my foot on the brake) into the driveway, and then partly rotated to align with the driveway. I got to a place where it seemed safe to just parallel park (no parking spot) and asked the hotel management if I could just leave it there (explaining what happened). No kidding about being scary! That few miles took me like 3 hours of terror. I was just wrecked by the time I collapsed into bed. The next day, I found some ugly rims and all-seasons that were a pretty close match for the car at a local big-box store for the rest of the journey and trip back (I was many hours from home-base). Night and day, and they weren't even winter/snow tires. The modern X-Ice I now have, combined with AWD on my car (the one above was RWD), are almost another night and day, but like this video, not nearly the gap that getting trapped with summer tires in cold/snow/ice is.
