Michelin Anakee Wild vs. Continental TKC 80 Twinduro Review

The challenger Michelin Anakee Wild or the classic Continental TKC 80 Twinduro? We took these two great dual-sport motorcycle tires and tried them both on asphalt and in off-road for about 2.000 miles.
First at GS TT 2017 - then on an abandoned motocross track. The Michelin Anakee Wild surprised us with some of its characteristics. But is it enough to be better than Continental’s TKC 80 Twinrduro - the benchmark in the segment?

I've ridden a KLR for 35,000, a Tiger 1200XC for 40,000 and now a Tiger 800XCa for the past 6000. I've tried almost every ADV tire including these 2. My verdict is that for the money there is no better set than a Shinko 804/805 combo. You can almost buy 2 full SETS for what one rear of these two costs. I get around 5 to 6k out of a rear and double that on the front with 50/50 riding. In my travels, the usual response from the Starbucks ADV types are that they would never run Shinkos. Elitists are everywhere I guess. Funny how I see lots of Shinkos on the high mountain passes in Colorado lately though...on all makes of bikes. No...I have never had a separation on any of my 705 or 804/805 Shinkos in almost 100,000 miles either.

Lateral grip could be better but the price can't. 2.5 pair or Shinkos for the price of one rear Conti. Dirt in Russia must be different than here in the USA. Cheers.

+1000. Had 804/5 on my Triumph Scrambler and they are brilliant, they wear more evenly than the K60s, and are really great both on and offroad...and SOOOOO cheap to replace, it's a no brainer.

Spot on, Shinkos are incredible value for money. The rest are reliant on brand name. The fact is if you run Shinkos you will probably never go back to the more expensive tyres. KLR650/GS1200 rider, cheers

Got the tkc80 on the 97 xr400 and the anakee wilds on the dr 350. I personally prefer the anakee wilds both on and off road. Nice and smooth on the road. Tkc80 good tyres, corner very well on the road and quiet. Just wheel spin everywhere in mud but thats expected from a 50/50.

Great review. Thanks. I've found TKC80 to be great off-road and on-road. But they don't last more than 3000 miles. Worse still, I found that the tread blocks break off easily. At one point I had to ride 200 miles with the tyre carcass visible through a hole.

I drove both tires in the front, they both vibe at low speed. Its normal for a nobby on a heavy bike, isn't it ? I did 10870 km on the TKC 80 front and 9000 km on the Anakee Wild front - I think I could go to a similar mileage with the Anakee. TKC 80 rear was 7000 km - I didn't get the Anakee in the 150/70-18 size back then so I couldn't test

You do good work, nice videos. BUT in this case you've made a bit of a mistake, different suspension, height, weight, they all add up to a bit of a difference in cornering and braking. Perhaps not, but you can't really be sure you haven't made some unintentional unjustice. Keep up the good work, I like watching your stuff. My comment here is more of a "loud thinking" than harsh critic. Perhaps I just can't accept that Michelin could be in any way better than the Conti. :)

TKC 80 is not that good in wet conditions. I haven't tested the Anakee wild up to now. At the moment my favorite dualsport tyre is the Mitas E07 Dakar. Edit: Now we did test the Anakee Wild. Good, but for us definitely not better than the Mitas E07 (Dakar). The E07+ is pretty equal to the Anakee.

What size? The typical 110/90R19-150/70R17 f/r had stability issues on grooved concrete pavement and loose gravel and was discontinued in favor of E07+ which sadly doesn't lasts as much and not as good in mud.

i appreciate your videos. given the differences between the two bikes, this video is completely unscientific. the tires will wear and handle differently by the fact that the bikes differ in weight and handling -suspensions differ. i get 2500 miles from conti tkc80 on a 2016 r1200gs.

Anton Danielsson - entirely different carcass construction. The radial will flex more, the curvatures will be very different, the deflections will differ, creating different cornering forces and have different damping characteristics.

I loved my anakee wild 3s offroad but I hated them on road. They floated so bad, and every corner they felt like I was going to fall off the edge of the tire. I loved my shinko 804/805s on the road, they definitely did not hook up as well as the wilds offroad though, I had much less confidence offroad with the Shinkos. But I can't stand the floating vibration sketchyness of the wild on the road. Maybe I will try just a rear anakee. My 790 came with karoo 3s, no idea how it will be in the dirt yet.

Subjective test much? Don't tell me about hard braking till you lock up a non ABS and endo from 55 to 20mph to miss a deers haunches. Anakee 3 oversize and EBC sintered got me thru, stock dropped me before. Main takeaway, stay away from stock and run the stickiest you can afford. Doesn't hurt to feel the road with racing brakes either.

Michelin does the best tires in the world and not only for motorcycles, in my opinion. I work in Michelin factory, so I have opportunity to test many of them🙂 I think that each review should separate two things - properties/adhesion and lifetime of the tires. These two don't match each other regarding the tires. You have to choose, what is more important for you.

I really think the TKC80 is a waste of money. There are other tires doing the job just as well off road and better on road. Not to mention, the price is insane for the amount of use you can get. At that low millage, you might as well get a DOT true knob tire.
