Michelin Anakee 3 or Metzeler Tourance Next Tyres - Why we changed back!

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

After 7,000 miles on the road, we have changed our tyres! Usually we get at least 10,000 miles out of a set, so we looked at how we found the Michelin Anakee 3 Tyres and why we have changed back to Metzeler Tourance Next Tyres!
If you liked the video, remember to give us a thumbs up as it helps a ton, and don't forget to subscribe too, so you don't miss anything!

Hi guys. I am glad I've stumbled across this video as I can not agree more with your view on the Anakee 3 tyres. In my opinion these tyres should not be in production let alone put as standard on new bikes. Unfortunately BMW and others fit them a lot. The tyre wearing (rear) is terrible, flattening in the middle leaving you with drop off during leaning /cornering. The compound doesn't have good grip or feeling on dry or wet. Once I've changed them with A41's on my f850gsa the bike handling and ride transformed . The Anakee 3 might have purpose or be better in some off road situations, I can not comment on this, but I very much doubt. If you guys can use your KZread influence to make this tyre type obsolete, that will be much appreciated 😉. Keep up the good work with your channel, watching your videos it's a joy

I used 2 sets of the Anakee 3 on my Triumph Explorer rode all over Europe loved them no problems. Had a set on my 2016 GS Adventure from new and they wore really quickly and I had a few moments. My 2018 GS Adventure Rallye came with them on I removed these after 50 miles and now run K60 Scouts.

He's right in he's review, we had the Anakee 3 in your rentals, KTM 1190, Gs1200, Tenere 1200, and the difference is big: We get more miles, better grip, less noise and more even wear (edge to edge) in the Tourance Next. The Next it's more street oriented. We are happy with the results, also help us to save some $$$ in so many tires over the year. Great review.

I'm tossed between the Tourance Next and the Michelin Road 6. Looking for more of a performance review than mileage review, but glad to hear good things about the Metzeler. i just wore the Tourance out in 3k miles on a Triumph Street Scrambler locally in the Eastern Sierra Nevada. Looking for a more road oriented tire for the twisty mountain roads.

on my 2014 R1200GS the Annakee III's were replaced at 13,000 miles with Conti Trail Attack II. The first set was replaced 22,000 miles on them, the second 21,000 miles on them and the current set has about 17,000 mile. And the Conti's track better, no wobble, handle rain well and heat too. Love your review. I ride with the TOURANCE NEXT tires on my r1200gs motorcycle. With the current pair of tires I rode more than 30K miles. I agree 100% with your opinion about the PANAKEE 3. It was very unpleasant to ride with them, held less than 7000 miles. The switch to TOURANCE NEXT brought my smile back to my face.

I have put 17,500kms / 10,ooo miles on Annakee 3's I have driven as low a 5 C cold riding in rain and never had them slip . I have run my KLR650 130 kms/hr and hit the twisty backroads of Canada with Zero issues with both first & second generation Annakee 3 . I drove Nefoundland end to end ! With not one panic moment . 2600 kms round trip. Again I have never had an Annakee 3 lose grip . I have hit 100kms/hr through turns on back roads really pushed both Bike and tires . You miss the point on Annakee 3's they track better than other tires. I have hit pavement defects mid to 3/4's in turns and no change in my direction of travel not even a bit of slip or slide. All kinds of pavement here on our roads from actual Cement to gravel asphalt to crushed small agrigate asphalt higher tar content and not once has the Annakee slipped . Rain or shine . I have seen plus 30 degree days and cold 5 degree nights . In rain in dry . No issues the Bike tracks straight . Even with a Top Case no issues. The only thing they hated was grass what tire doesn't ! These tires are a dream to tour with and 800kms in a single day , no issues. My last set the rear tire suffered a puncture on the way to have the new ones put on . I rode the last some 30 kms plus on it flat even and still as reliable as it had been for the 17,500 kms . I have had tires in the past blew out frt and rear the 30 k ride was not a worry to me just reduced speed and did not make any fast changes to my direction of travel . Told the Shop mechanic that tire is Used up to the the Max .... Now at over 34,ooo kms and I can still get the summer out of my second set . No hesitation to put a 3rd set on. As for road noise I never noticed road noise in any tire . And no stereo or ear buds when I ride .

Surprisingly I got 19,000km from the rear Anakee 3 on a Triumph Explorer but only managed 13,000 km from the front tyre with uneven wear even with correct pressures checked regularly. The Explorer seems to be front heavy so maybe that was the reason. I found them fine for 99% on road in wet or dry conditions but I don't try and scrape the foot pegs either.

I have 5000 miles on my Tiger 800 and the Next rear shows little if any wear. I am a 90/10 rider and I don't rip on the throttle or pull wheelies on this bike. That obviously has a lot to do with their lasting. Surprisingly they did OK in the mud, as long as you keep a little momentum going.

Coming from air cooled tc never noticed it.

Maybe coming off the deathwings , prefer them. Though noisy it doesn't bother me that much for the highway touring I do anyways. Thank you for this vid. I've got the f800GS. It came with Anakee 3's on it from new. The bike has only done 4.5K so far and I have to be honest, the Anakees seem to be fairly good. I do like to get a move on in the dry, they seem to corner well so far and i've not had any twitchy moments out of them yet. I have to say though, I'm not one for putting the bike right over on its side ( mostly because of that skinny 90 wide tyre on the front ) In the wet, I slow right down any way, so again no scarey moments so far either. Watching this, and reading other f800gs riders views, I think I will be going for the Tourance EXP's when they do need changing. We're off to France with Flashtours in June, so I hope the Anakees behave until we get back. Shouldn't be far off needing changing by then I would think. Cheers

What is not mentioned here is the lack of quality control with the Next's. First set on a R1250 gsa got 13000'ks on the rear and still usable. Second set rear finished at 6000k's. Well reported that they vary in quality and useful life batch by batch. Awesome tyre on the GS's, but I won't use them again for the above reasons.

  • @frankperham5629

Yes I had no issues with mileage, from memory I changed OEM tyres at 13,000km, fitted a set of Anakee 3's , changed the front for a Scorpion 2 at 26,000 and didn't' have to change the rear Anakee 3 until 32,000. I then swapped both out for Motoz Tractionator GPS 50/50 tyres so I could do more off road but to be honest I was kidding myself with both my ability and the weight of the Explorer. I just sold the Explorer yesterday and bought the new 2017 650 vstrom which I am stoked with. I am seriously thinking of buying a light trail bike for my off road adventures and just use the vstrom for the bitumen and good gravel roads. I live in Queensland Australia and we have no shortage of sh*t roads in this country.

My 2017 1200GS came with Anakee III's and i expected great things from what i had read. And the reported noise from the front tyre is loud but seems to get less as tread depth gets lower (or i just got used to the noise and tuned it out somewhat). Whatever, piss poor design on Michelin's behalf. After running in for 2000km i went on a 3000km trip that involved approx 2K touring pretty much upright & 1K riding hard on twisty alpine roads. At end of trip with 5000km on speedo the rear tyre was worn much more than i expected and was pretty much flat across the middle. On return, riding local hills and trying to do most acceleration whilst lent over exiting corners i managed to round the back tyre off somewhat but it was shot at 8000km. The front went to 9000km. The rear tyre gave no issues wet or dry but the front would for seemingly no reason slip occasionally, even in the dry. Fortunately the slip was small & short lived but confidence in the front was low. I have never been a Michelin fan but have had good experiences with Metzeler so on went Tourance Next's. Now, with 3K on the rear & 2K on the front no issues so far, wet or dry. About 1/3 has been on unsealed roads and the Next are much better than the Anakee's were off road. The Next tread pattern mainly covers the middle 1/3 of the tyre and the edges are pure road tyre tread pattern. The Next centre tread pattern seems to make them track in loose stuff better than the Anakee's. The Next rear is wearing faster than hoped and is showing signs of flattening out. New there was circa 8.8mm in the centre of the rear and after 3000km its 6mm. Hmmmm... And on sealed roads i am tying to look after the wear rate by accelerating less aggressively than usual when vertical. Off road hower the temptation to spin the rear tyre up somewhat and rear wheel steer coming out of corners could be the cause of the wear. Projecting the wear rate on the rear will get around 10,000km and this too is disappointing considering how i am trying to minimize tyre wear and 2/3 of riding is on twisty hills roads. Another wear factor could be the large amount of immediate torque available, exacerbated with the light throttle action and the free revving engine nature. This motor just want to go, and go hard. I could enjoy the GS so much more if i could get my tyres sponsored :-)

I finally changed the Annakee 3's on my BMW R1200GS Rallye and it only took a short ride on my Pirelli Scorpion Trail 2 tires to confirm my dislike of the Annakees that came stock. The horrible noise from the front is gone along with the resonance that seemed to make the bike feel like something wasn't quite right. I could never put my finger on exactly what I didn't like with the Annakee 3's, apart from the obvious noise but they just didn't feel right for me and detracted from the enjoyment of riding.

I have Metzelar Tourance Next on my Triumph Explorer which I have found superb in the wet & dry. At 1200km though the drone from the front end is awful at anything up to 60mph, really distracting. I hope it wears out again at a greater mileage. Any experience of that on the GS's?

I've just done 5500 miles on a anakee 3 rear on my gsa and worn them much further than the one on the vid- I'm not a big guy either, like 12 stone. People seem to be getting far more wear from them than this..? Gonna try some tourance next bases on what you guys say and others recommendations..

Sad review weekend boys . 25 miles ...... Over 40,ooo kms on Annakee 3's with none of the issues these people report . No noise No panic never at a loss for grip . Where I live we say if you don't like the weather wait 5 mins . I can expect the weather to change several times on a long ride just around my province . I have done wood roads and goat paths. I am slightly addicted to twisty back roads where Sport Bikes generally rule . When I get a sport bike rider saying they could not stay with me on the KLR I feel pretty good . I think I might stay with the 3's because of my blacktop addiction. Very tempted by the Newer Annakee Wilds for a bit more fun in the dirt . Tempted . Safe Travels everyone !!

I will admit that I’m not the best rider in the world, so I have a hard time deciphering if my Anakee 3’s on my GSA become “panicky”. When do you encounter the undesirable behavior from them? Maybe I’ll try Tourance next.

Hey Phil, thanks for the question. We found that in the wet more than any other time, when cornering they didnt grip as well as other tyres such as the Tourance Nexts etc. But generally they dont seem to grip as much so we noticed that there was a little more slippage on the road and on corners, which in turn reduced the confidence of the rider, but back to the tourance nexts and confidence was back. hope that helps

Just wanted to add my 2 pennies here. - Never paid an interest in tyres EVER! Had my 65plate R1200r Sport for 2 years, never skipped or missed a heart beat, ever. Never actually thought about it, just rode the bike with no issues ever, and mostly in Dynamic mode. A few weeks ago test rode a new GS Rallye, went out for 2 hours, ok weather wasn't great but it was terrible. Traction Control kicked in on this GS FAR too many times for my liking!!!! Got back to the dealership, spoke to the sales guy about it, turns out the GS that I just rest rode had Anakee 3's on!! Got home to check my R1200r and they are Metzeler's!!!! I said to the sales guy that there is NO WAY I want Anakee's on my new GS - Please see to this if you can!! Apparently its just pot-luck on new models, you get what you're given!! By some miracle, my GS Rallye has arrived in the dealership and has Metzelers on!! I am so happy!!! Great channel by the way!

Tourance nexts or roadtec 01's are what we use at the moment and find them great. We have been to Wales (in the UK) on mild dirt roads etc with the nexts and found them ok, although you might like the karoo streets from Metzeler which are suited to all kinds of terrain. video coming shortly.

Jose Manuel Leal Marquez The Pirelli Scorpion trail 2 is I think the best 20/80 adv tire ever for someone that ride hard in the twisties and that is more on the road , I like the Mitas E-09 for a 50/50 tire , you can still go fast on the street with out lousing control and they are not to bad off road if you slow down a bite more than with a full knobby tire . I have done more than 11,000 km on a GS1200 with the Scorpion .

I commute 270 miles every week ( Yes I ride a lot ) 99,95 % high speed expressway the other .05% is when I cross the front yard to get on the road In Florida there are hot days and very hot days also there are rainy days and monsoon days The M next wins every day better wet traction better wear better overall rideabilty so I guess we agree 100% ?

I also agree. Rode two R1200gs adventures back to back, one with Tourance next the other with Anakee 3’s fitted and the Michelins are much much more noisy. Also have a 1200 Rallye with Karoo street tires fitted. The noise from the Anakees is comparable to that from the Karoo streets with a much more aggressive pattern. Michelins tires are very good, but usually very noisy whether their motorcycle or car rubber.

Not sure why the majority of GS/GSA, and other "adventure" bike riders don't just use Sport Touring tyres anyway. 99% of GS riders don't go off road so why put up with the noise and inferior grip and wear of a so called "dual purpose" tyre, tyres which are actually pretty useless off road anyway (certainly in the wet)
