Metzeler Tourance Next 2 - Best Adventure Touring Tyres?

Metzeler Tourance Next 2: 90% Road / 10% Off-Road
Is this the best tyre for your adventure or adventure touring motorbike? The Metzeler Tourance Next 2 is a very quiet tyre and it warms up quickly and steers beautifully in the curves, and importantly for me it offers lots of grip and feel on the side / edge of the tyre.
A full in-depth and detailed review of the tyre and its technologies / construction, will follow later in the series once I have a few thousand miles covered.
Wheel spokes are very simple and easy to check and adjust, and it’s an important part of the maintenance that we as owners should be doing.
Hopefully you enjoy the content I create, so by Subscribing you are letting me know, that you appreciate the effort and time I invest in creating these episodes, and it also helps to grow and develop the channel.
If you have any questions, just leave me a comment and I will reply
Best Wishes, Carl

    WOW! You called it on the 1300 with the taillights. Your content is OUSTANDING. You description of a neutral tire is spot on. I've been trying to decide on tires for a month. You have confirmed my decision to get the Metzler Tourance Next 2. Fitting them on 2022 R 1250 GS 40th Anniversary. I have the A41 now. The fronts wore out first around 6,000 miles. Now at 12000 miles they need replacement. The rears have about 30% wear remaining before the wear bar. I'm 175 LBS ride on the aggressive side. about 140,000 street miles of ridding. 120,000 on race bikes 20,000 on the last 2 GS's. Fantastic Content and extremely well-articulated!

    Hi Flash, thank you for your kind words. You probably have more experience with tyres than I do looking at your mileage, but I think you might just like the TN2. They roll very nicely into the corners without that tipping in fast feeling that you can get on more fast street focused tyres, I really like the TN2. The other tyre I'm looking forward to trying is the new Scorpion Trail 3, which has been my favourite tyre for several years. Your going to notice as big difference compared to the A41....let me know how you get on and which tyres you finally choose. Kindest Regards Carl

    Continental Trail Attack 3 V rated, completely rock solid wet or dry, grip as well as any other 'trail' tyres. The bonus is they do more miles than any of the other tyres because they have deeper tread

    Had these on my GS since Apr 2022, have done 10,000 miles on them, and they still have a great deal of life left in them, particularly the rear, and they are not squared off (given the profile,and change in compound between the centre and sidewall), which can sometime accelerate squaring off, but excellent tyres

    6:40 I dropped my wheels/tires off at a shop when they were very busy. They said they'd get the tires the next day since they would be closing in an hour. I said okay, at least they weren't overpromising. I drove to a gas station right after, and after I gassed up my car and bought a drink, the shop called to say my tires were done!

    Hi Carl it’s Jack from Australia i recently upgraded my 2005 gs1200 to a good deal on a 2022 run out deal on the 1250 Rallye. Wow what an awesome bike, however the noise coming up through the front is so loud and very annoying. Thanks for your comments re tyres it was comforting to you mention how quiet they are. On my old GS i ended up using pirelli scorpion trail 2 which I found really good with minimal front end noise. I really appreciate your content and expertise with regards to maintenance advice, spot on ! Love your channel, cheers from Jack

    I have the Tourance Next 2 fitted om my 1200 GS for about 8000 km now. I love them; very stable, good in the rain and they don’t wear as fast like the Bridgestone A41 I had before, especially the front tyre. The front tyre showed strange wear pattern, I don’t see that on the Metzelers 😊.

    Had two sets of the Next on my 1200 Super Tenere. Dumped the OEM Anakees for the Next2 on my 1250GSA for the reasons you say : felt like they « fell » in the corners past a certain point. Also, I never felt confident in cold and / or wet weather (front feeling like not precise, and rear like slipping all the time). None of these with the Next2 : precise, very neutral as you say, huge grip both on dry or wet conditions, and very good on dirty roads. My wife found the Metzeler much more confortable too. The tires are now nearly 11k km and still have some left !

    I’ve hit 45 degrees lean on my 1250GS on Scorpion Rally STR tyres, so any 90/10 tyre should be capable of doing the same easily

  • @justthewayitis

    @justthewayitis

    12 күн бұрын

    Hi GPZ, ( I remember them well ) yes 45 degrees is more than fine but the reason I changed is that once you get beyond this you cannot feel a lot , now I’m running the NT2 foot peg scrapping at 50 is quite a nice change as you can feel what’s going on at the front. Yes I appreciate that not everyone wants this ability from a tyre on a GS but coming from sports bikes and importantly good feeling tyres it’s a nice improvement. Of course this is not what most GS want but the difference is really noticeable especially for those of us that started way back in the 80/90s with no electronics aids. I remember the GPZ900 very fondly 🙋🏻‍♂️. The STR is a great tyre and I’m sure you will have fun with them. Thank you for sharing 👍 Kind regards Carl

    Cheers, Carl. I'm about to order a set of the Metzeler Tourance Next 2 tires. Curious did you use the V or W rated tires? Do you know if it makes a difference with the R1250 GS bikes? Thanks, as always!

  • @justthewayitis

    @justthewayitis

    6 ай бұрын

    Hi Nick “V” rating is what you need for the GS, “W” are for tyres rated for higher speed (up to 168mph), to achieve this the side wall construction is different and much stronger, which will give you a harder / firmer ride quality. I would recommend staying with V rated. Carl

    Carl...another first rate report. The Tourance used to be my go to post oem tyre choice . It seems that the Next 2s will be following my Road 6s. Only 30kgs in the top box? Hi Nick, thank you 🙏, I was really tempted by the Road 6 as so many owners report good things, especially as the 6 version has full Silica compounds now on that rear on the side / edge. Carl, eagerly waiting for long term update on tires. I am up for tire change now. Yes, Michelin Road 6 is no brainer, but I am etching to try TN2. I have had great experience with Metzeler tires in past. When can I expect the long term or mid term review of TN2s now?

  • @justthewayitis

    @justthewayitis

    2 ай бұрын

    Hi Amey, the long term review want be to much later in year probably at the end of the season. Both tyres you highlighted are extremely good but I have really enjoyed the TN2 in terms of grip and performance. If I was going to change tyres today it would be between the two you have mentioned and the Pirelli scorpion trail 3 which has only recently been launched. If your riding is 100% road focused then all 3 options should be high on your list, but if you do occasionally ride on gravel or hard pact dirt roads then for me it’s between the NT2 & ST3. Hope this helps you Kind regards Carl

    As much as I like the knobbly aesthetics of my Anakee Adventures (very macho, for someone who rarely goes off the tarmac), they are rather noisy. They have a strange tendency to grab onto any rut in the road and pull me in.... or maybe it's just me, I dunno. Anyhow the rear has truly started squaring off now at the 20,000km mark and I'll probably continue commuting on them for another 5,000km, so I'm pretty happy with their longevity. But after that, I might give these Tourance Next 2s a try. Quiet eh? Looking forward to it!

    Hello, its a good question you ask, but without comparing them "back to back" on the same bike its difficult to say. The Tourance Next 2 I currently have on the GS are really great and offer a big improvement in performance and feel over the Anakee Adventure tyres, but the ST2 tyre is still possibly my favourite tyre and I hope to fit them next and try them. Yes the tread pattern and compounds are very similar, but i think the profile / shape is slightly different. Best Wishes Carl

    Très bonne revue Carl, merci beaucoup. J'ai cependant un commentaire, bienveillant je tiens à le préciser, pensez-vous vraiment que les Metzeler 90% 10% se comportent différemment que des 100% sur du gravel sec ou une piste sèche et très facile ? Je ne pense pas. Personnellement j'ai essayé les Michelin d'origine sur ma 1250 GS et maintenant les road 6 toujours de chez Michelin ( 6000 km avec les anakee et 9000 km avec les road 6 sur route, voie rapide, autoroute et chemins vraiment simples et toujours sur le sec) et je ne constate pas de différence notable entre ces deux montes. Ce qui me semble normal en fait. Encore une fois merci beaucoup pour votre revue.

    Hello Ivan, Good morning. The AA is a good tyre for its intended purpose for owners to have the opportunity to explore a little off road. It’s still a good tyre on road just not as capable as the TN2, which has the advantage in terms of grip and feel in the dry and with less noise. You could change them or do as I did as use them for a year and then change, so not to waste a set of tyres. Best wishes Carl

Question 2: I have 6000 km on my GS and never use it in rain or offroad. Do I absolutely have to clean the brake calipers? ( I am not a mechanic…I am a retired teacher. Thank you again. Surely I can have answers from my dealer 💸 but I prefer your opinion. 🏍😉

    Hi Marc, Question 1. No not from me and I have now removed all of them, someone was trying to hijack and redirect subscribers that had left comments. I have reported them to KZread and banned them from the channel. Sorry about that, sometimes this sort of nonsense does happen ☹️ Question 2: if you have owned your bike from new and you have been careful using cleaning products NO you don’t really need to do this at 6000 km. It also depends on how you ride, if it’s mainly slow steady riding or you do lots of city riding then the pads do eventually become glazed and the efficiency decreases, in which case cleaning them and the pads will help return them to maximum performance. I would say at 12,000km or at the latest every 2 years depending on your mileage it should be done. I do this at the end of every season but I ride fairly quickly and I’m heavy on my front brakes. Hope this helps Best wishes Carl

    Hello Rick, yes the TN2 are performing very well and I am pleased with them. The choice between the two tyres (NT2 & MR6) is a difficult one, if you only ever ride on the road then maybe the R6 but if you want the option (as I do) to be able to explore dry gravel roads then the TN2 would be the better option. But….. I’ve only just heard that the new Scorpion Trail III is due out very soon and the ST2 was my absolute favourite….. so there is a third option for you to consider. I’m about the ask Pirelli if I can have a set to test but don’t know if they would be willing as I’m only recently put the NT2 on which I’m happy with. And… honestly you can’t go wrong with either of these 3 tyres, tyre technology has really moved forward and I would be happy to run any of them. Which bike do you have?
